Examine the view that the nuclear family is universal. (24)

Examine the view that the nuclear family is universal. 24 The nuclear family is one which is often described as a household, of two parents and their dependent children. This is a view widely accepted by many sociologists, but they also argue that this may or may not be the universal family that all societies base their norms around. George Murdock, claims that this is true and that this type of nuclear family is universal and accepted by all as the 'right' type of family, however other sociologists specifically, Kathleen Gough, reject this claim and say that there are societies that are an exception to the rule. George Murdock in 1949 stated that the nuclear family was universal, this was based on his sample of 250 societies, ranging from small hunting and gathering bands to large-scale industrial societies. Murdock's definition of the family is that it is "a social group characterised by common residence, economic, cooperation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted of the sexually cohabitating adults", this Murdock claimed was the nuclear family that existed in every society, and this family had four main functions. Murdock says that this family performs four functions essential to the continued existence of society; the first function according to

Which three factors affect the price of a second hand car.

Used Car Prices: Coursework Aim The aim of this project is to decide which three factors affect the price of a second hand car. I will choose the three factors, which I think, will influence the price the most out of several lines of enquiry. Introduction I plan to investigate what factors influence the price of a second hand car. To begin with I had to look at a database of 100 cars. This database gave me a lot of information about each car (e.g. age, air con, mileage etc). All these factors were my lines of enquiry. To choose my three factors I had to decide which three of the eighteen factors would affect the price the most. Lines Of Enquiry There are a few lines of enquiries, which could be possible factors in affecting a second hand cars price. To choose my three factors I put all the lines of enquiry into a list from most important (1) to least important (18) . Mileage - This is my top factor because it tells you exactly how long the car has left in it. If the mileage is high it means the car has traveled far and may be in need of repair. 2. Age - This tells you how long the car has been running, if it's been running a long time its parts may be worn from the rust and may need a repair. 3. Engine Size - Many people want a large engine, this may be because they want to go fast or maybe they live up a hill and want to make sure that it can go up without much

Hardware and Functions of a Micro Processor

Ricki Lambert Computer Systems M2 Introduction In this assignment I have been asked to describe, with the aid of diagrams, the hardware (including logic gates, registers, buses, CU, ALU and memory) and its function within a model microprocessor. Firstly it is important to understand the basics of a microprocessor and outline what its main functions are to be. A microprocessor is known as a central processing unit, the CPU and is madder from silicon to produce an electronic chip. The components of the CP are vast and they shall be outlined in further detail throughout. A processor can be through of as the heart of any computer and will control the logic of almost any digital device; this can be within any household component, not just a personal computer. There are three characteristics of any computer and they are; * The instruction set - This is the collection of instructions in the assembly language. Whenever an instruction is developed, the new instruction is chosen at random from the instruction set (with all instructions given an equal probability of being selected). * Bandwidth - The number of bits processed into a single instruction * Clock speed - This is the frequency that determines how fast devices that are connected to the bus system operate To make the system / processor faster we can do two things, increase the bandwidth and increase the clock speed.

Analysing the techniques used ti introduce genre, character and setting in The Mummy Returns and Twister.

STUDY THE OPENING SEQUENCE OF 2/3 FILMS. ANALYSE THE TECHNIQUES USED TO INTRODUCE GENRE, CHARACTER, SETTING AND PLOT. In The Mummy Returns, the opening sequence has very bright colours and lighting like gold and black. They are vibrant and realistic. However, in Twister the lighting is low-key like dark, shadowy and the colours are blue and black. This introduces the film as if it is a horror, but a few minutes later it shows it is an action/adventure movie because there is news on the T.V. of a twister and also right at the beginning, the title credits are on screen and are suddenly blown away. They are trying to create a scary atmosphere. You can also tell it is an action/adventure because the twister seems to growl like an animal. This and the way the house appears in shadow is also another way in which people could be mislead into thinking it was a horror. One thing that tells you the film is an action/adventure is the music. It is on right from the beginning and this is why we notice it first. It is trying to create tension to give you a big clue to what the genre might be. The dialogue is mostly diagetic because there is no narrator. You can't hear it most of the time though because of the SFX such as the twister. The director puts this in deliberately to mount the tension. A lot of the time in action films we see long shots and Twister is no different. Also, the

Twentieth-Century Ballet Music

Twentieth-Century Ballet Music Assignment 1 Assess Diaghilev's achievement in the early years of the Ballets Russes, up to (and including) 1914. You should consider the extent of his importance bearing in mind that he was neither a musician nor a choreographer. Considering the fact that Serge Diaghilev was neither a musician nor a choreographer, it is ironic that the success of the Ballet Russes was a consequence of a man who simply created a collaboration of outstanding artists. The idea that Diaghilev was not talented in these areas perhaps suggests why the company was so triumphant, as he was able to criticise every aspect of the performances. The Ballet Company was founded by Diaghilev in 1909, which "burst upon Paris...with the force of a revelation".1 Throughout the duration of the Ballet Russes, numerous successful performances were exhibited, particularly in the "early years" up to and including 1914. During this period, "Cléopatre" (1909) and "Daphnis et Chloé" (1912) are just two of the company's accomplishments, portraying just how victorious the company were. It has been suggested that the success was largely due to the personality of Diaghilev and his ability to bring together artists, namely Tamara Karsavina, who danced with "great beauty and intelligence",2 Nijinsky, Stravinsky and Fokine, to name a few. In more cases than one, it was more of a

Bletchley Park source based questions

Assignment Two: Objectives Two and Three Source Questions ) From Source A we learn that his or her work was highly secretive, "You never discussed your work with anyone else." It also suggests that people had their own specific area in Station X, "We were very, very departmentalised." We also learn that it was only the real high ups that knew exactly what was going on through out Bletchley Park "Except the real high ups." Overall it implies that Bletchley Park was a highly secretive place and no one knew what happened at Bletchley Park apart from what they themselves were doing. 2) Source A agrees with source C when it says, "I hadn't a clue what was going on in the rest of the Park". The person saying this is suggesting that very secretive and little information was given to them about anything else that happened in Bletchley Park. This is backed up by Source C when it says, "We didn't often know the results of our activities." How ever they do indirectly disagree. Source A suggests that there were people higher up in Station X that knew everything that went on "Except the real high ups" but in Source C there is no mention or suggestion that this was in fact true. In source B it agrees with Source C when it says, "None of us knew quite what would happen next." This is backed up by source C "We didn't...know the results." Nevertheless I feel that source B mostly disagrees

To Investigate the Factors which Determine the stopping Distance of Rollers down a Ramp.

To Investigate the Factors which Determine the stopping Distance of Rollers down a Ramp Theory- When the roller is rolling down the slope then potential energy is converted to kinetic energy that converts into heat energy. MGH = 1/2MVsquared The loss of kinetic energy on the carpet is .... /2MVsquared = braking force x braking distance therefore.... /2Mvsquared = F x so MGH = F x If m, g and f are constant then.... However if G is constant then.... So.... This relation ship can be tested for a fixed angle, roller mass and fixed carpet. Predictions- In this experiment, before it was conducted and results were obtained , I predicted that for all the rollers, that the stopping distance would be directly proportional to the distance up the ramp. This prediction can be tested by plotting a graph of the results. Variables and Constants in the Experiment Variables Constants Distance up ramp Type of carpet Distance along carpet Angle 'G' Mass of roller Type of metal To maintain a fair test these are the procedures I had - * 1 fixed angle * 1 set of rollers * to make sure that the ruler was at the bottom of the ramp * A fixed interval (3,6,9ect....) To find out if my predictions were correct, I conducted an experiment. It was set up as follows; The Experiment Aim - to investigate the factors, which determine the stopping distance of rollers down

New International Economic Order - The international confidence in India's economy has been fully restored.

New International Economic Order The international confidence in India's economy has been fully restored. The reforms launched have made India an attractive place for investment. Duties have been lowered, repatriation of profit made liberal and levels of foreign equity raised considerably, 100 percent in case of export oriented industry. While several multinational companies have entered the Indian market, some Indian companies have also begun to gain international recognition. In the field of computer software, India is among the major exporting nations with an overflow of scientists in the field. The fourth WTO Ministerial Conference was held at Doha, Qatar from 9 to 14 November, 2001 to decide upon the future work programme of the WTO. While there were strong pressures to launch a comprehensive round of negotiations including multilateral regimes on investment, competition policy, trade facilitation, government procurement and environment, India was opposed to overburdening of the multilateral trading system with non-trade or new issues in the agenda. It felt that WTO already had a sufficiently large agenda consisting of mandated negotiations and mandated reviews and, therefore, India underlined the need for resolving the implementation issues, arising from the current agreements in a time-bound manner before addressing new issues for negotiations. India played a

The problem with drugs in spain

The problem with drugs in spain I. Summary Not a significant producer or cultivator of narcotics, Spain serves as a transit country for South American cocaine and Moroccan hashish destined for Europe. The most notable increase in narcotics consumption in Spain continues to be the use of designer drugs, such as ecstasy. Spanish drug policy is coordinated by the National Plan on Drugs (Plan Nacional Sobre Drogas, or PNSD). Government policy is to attack the drug problem across a broad front, encompassing prevention, treatment, re-incorporation of addicts into society, and interdiction of supply, with primary emphasis on prevention. The PNSD plays a coordinating role, with prevention and treatment activities undertaken by the Ministeries of Health and Education, regional and local governments, and NGO'S. Law enforcement activities are the responsibility of the police, civil guard, and Customs. The most recent PNSD annual report (The "1996 Memoria," released in November 1997) covers calendar year 1996. The government introduced a package of measures in January 1997 to provide new powers to combat drug trafficking, money laundering, and diversion of chemical precursors while extending existing prevention and treatment programs and authorizing new ones. Spain is a party to the 1961 UN Single Convention and its 1972 Protocol; the 1971 UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances, the

“The Mycenaeans were a people preoccupied with war” How conclusively do the various types of archaeological evidence we have for the Mycenaean warfare and defence support this statement?

"The Mycenaeans were a people preoccupied with war" How conclusively do the various types of archaeological evidence we have for the Mycenaean warfare and defence support this statement? The Mycenaean age began around 1600 BC and came to end around 1100 BC. Although this period was distinguished by its warlike aspects, I would take issue with the statement that the Mycenaeans were preoccupied by war. The first manifestations of the Mycenaean civilisation were found in the Peleponnese, especially in the north-east and the south-west. By around 1400BC the Mycenaean civilisation had penetrated the greater part of mainland Greece and later still the civilisation seems to have expanded far beyond the main body of Greece. Excavations have revealed Mycenaean remains in southern Italy, Egypt, Sicily, the Dodecanese, the Cyclades, Cyprus, and sites in Asia Minor. Evidence of Mycenaean settlements has been beyond a doubt found in Rhodes and in Melos. These settlements may have been a general expansion of the Mycenaean civilisation yet large amounts of Mycenaean imports as found at Cyprus indicate to many archaeologists that these may be trade outposts. General expansion would make war necessary rather than a chosen pursuit as the civilisation would have to take new land whilst defending what they already had. Like all of the civilisations of the time the Mycenaean civilisation was
