The Truth about Wal-Mart

  1. Individual Stakeholder approach

Wal-Mart is an American public multinational corporation founded by Sam Walton in 1962. Wal-Mart runs chains of large discount department stores and warehouse stores. The company is the world's 18th largest public corporation (Forbes Global 2010) and the largest public corporation when ranked by revenue. Wal-Mart employs around 2 million associates around the world.

This essay focuses on how Wal-Mart’s decisions affect individual stakeholders.

Firstly, shareholders, they are the people who have invested money into this company. They want a return on their investment and care only about making profits. The fact that Wal-Mart make so much profit indicates that its shareholder receive high sums of dividends. The shareholders meet annually, to elect the board of directors. The Board is totally responsible to the shareholders.

Now we will focus on the employees of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart refers to their employees as associates.  Businesses do not necessarily treat their employees well, and neither does Wal-Mart pays their associates’ unacceptably low wages, to the extent that some of the employees cannot afford their basic needs. Most workers spend their wages on buying the products at Wal-Mart; thus the money they make goes back into the corporation. Moreover, they do not have proper medical insurance. The insurance Wal-Mart offers to their employees covers a very small proportion of the medication fee. Their family members do not get insured either. Wal-Mart believes that employees show receive public (governmental) assistance for healthcare since they are paying taxes. Public healthcare requires a lot of paperwork and employees waste a lot of time; so they do not prefer it.

Wal-Mart also bribes organizations to bring in illegal immigrants from countries like Mexico to work for them. Many of them are paid extremely low wages (below the minimum wage) while some of them do not even get paid. These workers have no choice but to work for Wal-Mart regardless of the working conditions. Otherwise they might get caught by the law. Some of the employees were forced to work in the stores 24 hour long because managers have locked them inside the stores. This shows how Wal-Mart exploits their helpless workforce.

Wal Mart also has production facilities in countries around the world e.g. China and Bangladesh. I say to myself ; ‘If that’s the way Wal-Mart treats employees in America then what will happen to those in the Third (and Second) world countries’. In China workers, are paid even lower than in U.S.A, but the costs of living is also cheaper. In China, due to high population people are desperate for jobs. Wal-Mart takes advantage of this and exploits workers. The working conditions in the factories are unacceptable. It’s noisy and extremely hot. Wal Mart gives their employees in China rooms ...
