Crooks is a black, crippled, stable buck that had a bunk in the harness room of the barn. The room had one small window and a door leading into the barn. His bunk was like a coffin filled with hay and blankets piled over it, and on the wall clinging with crumbling paint there were broken harnesses hanging on the wall waiting to be repaired. He had many different repairing apparatus and tools sitting on the bench by the side of the wall. There was a cupboard over his bunk and bottles of medication inside supposedly for the horses and himself. There was cans of tar and soap, separately sitting in one corner of the room. He had many personal items for he was a cripple and wouldn’t be able to travel round much. He had numerous pairs of shoes, a pair of boots, an alarm clock and a shotgun. He had several books too, and they were placed on a shelf above his bunk, which also proved he was quite intelligent and literate unlike most men those days during the Great Depression. Beside the bookshelf was a nail hammered into the wall and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses dangling from it. Altogether the room was neat and tidy for a worker, and he kept it like that for he was a proud man.
