Compare and contrast two poems that contain different representations of school pupils.

English Essay Compare and contrast two poems that contain different representations of school pupils. 'Comprehensive' is a representation of a comprehensive school, in the way that the diverse mixture of cultures are included in the poem. Each pupil has a different life and culture, and the pitfalls of comprehensive schools are clearly shown by the way in which each pupil is represented. The first pupil is African, and homesick, and is not happy in England. It seems as though she misses her culture, and feels as though she is being stifled by the British culture. This is also true of 'In Which The Ancient History I learn Is Not My Own.' The boy represented in this poem is homesick, and also feels stifled by the British culture, due to the fact that he is being almost forced into it, thus not allowing him to enjoy his own Irish culture. The teacher wants him to learn 'The English Kings, the famous battles and God's grace in History' which causes him to begin to forget his own History, which he is desperately trying to hold on to. The second pupil in 'Comprehensive' is a boy named 'Wayne,' who is depicted as a stereotypical boy. He is precocious in the way he thinks he is 'too old for games' and believes he is old enough to support something so controversial, when clearly he does not understand it to a full extent. He holds a very patriarchal view, especially when it comes

In my essay I will be comparing the two poems "nothings changed" by Tatamkhulu Afrika and "still I'll rise" by Maya Angelou. My main aim in this essay is to discover how the two poets describe and express their feelings. I will do this by focusing on their use of linguistic techniques and what effect this has given on the reader. Moreover, I will concentrated one how the poets have structured the poem, by carefully analyzing it. Maya Angelou Maya Angelou is one of the most renowned and influential voice of our time. She has many titles such as memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. She was born on the 4th April 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of 26 Angelou studied modern dance and poetry; however her studies did not stop there. She traveled to Cairo, Ghana, New York and in this time she had mastered French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and Fanti. In 1993 she composed a poem at Bill Clinton's inauguration; it was watched live on air all around the world. Stanza 1 "You may write me down in history, with your bitter twisted lies you may trod me in very dirt but still like dust ill rise" in his opening verse of the poem, the reader automatically senses Maya's attitude towards the reader and I felt as though she was spearing the reader with these words by saying "your bitter" by doing this I thought

Comment on what view of Indian culture is portrayed in 'A Stench of Kerosene' giving your own personal response.

Comment on what view of Indian culture is portrayed in 'A Stench of Kerosene' giving your own personal response. ' A Stench of Kerosene' , authored by the pen of Amrita Pritam, is a tale of suffering and injustice in the rural areas of India. The author tries to relate the life of a young Indian wife to the reader in such a way that it leaves them feeling pity and remorse for her. Within it there are elements of superstition, superiority, sexism and ancient traditions. Evidently the portrayal of Indian culture is not one that may be easily accepted by most western societies as it reveals the actuality of Hindu culture in its extreme. It illustrates how harsh it can be, especially towards the gentler sex. The story opens with Guleri heeding to the call of a horse; ' The mare was from her parents' village. She put her neck against its neck as if it were the door to her parents' house.' In this line the mare metaphorically represents her parents and her love for them, therefore as soon as she hears it coming she ' ran out of the house'. This also illustrates how deeply she misses her mother and father and how she is anxious to be close to anything that may link her to them, even if it is just a horse. ' she would come

How is Afro-Caribbean Culture and Experience Presented in Yardie?

How is Afro-Caribbean Culture and Experience Presented in Yardie? My first impressions of D are that he is a sneaky and tactful person: "D unbuttoned his jacket and glanced around the airport arrival lounge." D's background is an important aspect of his character because it tells us how he became a drug dealer. It explains how the local pushers in his area encouraged him to sell drugs: "he soon realized that he could make more money by working for the big shots downtown than he could ever earn in any of the dead-end trades his mother wished him to learn." Jerry Dread, D's brother, is an important character in this story because he shows D that there is an alternative way of being successful by becoming a Rastafarian. Jerry went from being a vicious drug dealer to a spiritual person. Harry is important because he shows us how teenagers his age look up to drug dealers like D, and have an urge to drop out of school and become drug dealers themselves. Also, we see a different side of D. After discovering that Harry had been suspended from school, D hands him a 5 pound note. D is doing something for Harry: "look now, you don't have no quarrel with your mother, she's just worried about you." D is giving him some advice. Piper is an important character because he comments on the development of the black community in Britain. He converses with D about the way kids get spoiled

Referring To Poems From Different Cultures

Poetry Essay: Referring To Poems From Different Cultures In this essay I will be comparing three poems, all concerning the social acceptance and positions of different cultures. The three poems are: 'Search For My Tongue' by Sujata Bhatt, 'Unrelated Incidents' by Tom Leonard and 'Half-Caste' by John Agard. The first one deals with he clash of languages, the second one with the seclusion of the lower class, and the third one with the controversial term of being 'half-caste'. 'Search For My Tongue' by Sujata Bhatt describes her fear of losing her mother tongue to a new language. She has moved away from her own country and now speaks her new language more than her native tongue, which she worries might 'rot and die' because of the struggle between the two languages. However, she is relieved when her mother tongue returns in her dreams. She imagines it as pushing away the other tongue, and she is delighted that she still remembers it. 'Unrelated Incidents' is about Tom Leonard's views on the separation between lower classes and upper and middle classes. He feels that a posh accent does not make you more important than someone with a 'common' accent. He believes that one's dialect should not affect the way people are judged, and if they are listened to or not. He believes that maybe someone would not take a working-class accent as seriously as someone with a BBC accent', as he

With Reference To At Least Four Different Poems, Explore How Cultural Identity Is Represented By The Various Poets

With Reference To At Least Four Different Poems, Explore How Cultural Identity Is Represented By The Various Poets The four poems I have selected to focus on all portray a cultural identity in their own unique way. 'Wherever I hang' and 'The Fat Black Woman Goes Shopping', are both written by Grace Nichols, a poet of Guinean background. I have also chosen to explore 'Dream Variation' by Langston Hughes as well as 'Half-Caste' by John Agard. I have chosen this selection of poetry because I feel that each poem has great merit in successfully challenging the racial disparities of the modern world. Grace Nichols unsurprisingly tends to base her poems around the inequality between the black and white communities; this is reflected in her poem 'Taint'. The poems I have chosen to investigate by her are 'The Fat Black Woman Goes Shopping' and 'Wherever I hang'. I chose to include these poems because they are in contrast to many of her other poems and it's content mainly comments on how white and black lifestyles differ rather than her usual theme of black persecution. The other two poems I have chosen by the two different poets both concentrate more on black discrimination like 'Taint' and are more similar to that poem, in this respect, than the two poems I chose by Grace Nichols. Langston Hughes writes a detailed analysis of the desires of the average Black man in his poem "Dream

Compare the ways an event is described in blessing and one other poem.

Compare the ways an event is described in blessing and one other poem. Dharker and Ezekiel both use several different methods of describing a significant event in some person's life. Blessing describes a water pipe which bursts in what seems to be a dry Asian country, possibly poverty stricken. The poet describes how the people of the town reacted to the burst pipe. Night of the Scorpion however, appears to describe when Ezekiel's mother was stung by a scorpion and the events that unfolded as the poison coursed through her body, and the reactions from his father and people of the village. Both poems use onomatopoeia in their attempt to convey the events in question, however 'drip' is used to describe how the water pipe would usually distribute water which creates a negative tone, as does 'buzzing' in the Night of the Scorpion. The 'drip' of water highlights what land and life was probably like before the event of the pipe bursting; dry and harsh. The lack of water is then contrasted greatly with the 'sudden rush.' In the Night of the Scorpion 'buzzing' is used to describe how the people of the village chanted for the woman that was stung, it also suggests they may have been an annoyance to the woman during the event that unfolds as a buzz can be an immensely irritating sound in the wrong situation. Secondly, personification is used to emphasise the severity and possible

Island man: Grace Nichols

Texts from other cultures Old Father: Hugh Boatswain Island man: Grace Nichols Comparisons: Two different Caribbean writers write these two poems. They both were in England while writing the poems. The theme of the poems is about loving their country and culture. On other hand the poems are about patriotism. "Old Father" and "Island man" is about the melancholy passions of their heart. They are missing their country so badly and they are desperate to go back to their motherland. They listed their nature, atmosphere, people, seaside, birds, cricket matches and so on. Everything they mentioned in their poem keeps reminding them about their country. They can see their country on their dream. Although "Old Father" is more descriptive than "Island man" two poets have explained successfully their wishes and reasons behind missing their country. " Old Father" and hasn't got any rhyme or rhythm "Island man" either. Contrast: Old Father: (England 1959) The poem is written more descriptively and manifestly expressed than "Island Man". The poem is about the poet's real life story. He describes his passion, his feelings more splendidly as he could .He tried to bring different subjects to give a life to the poem. In the whole poem he mentioned the atmosphere in England for him and compared it to his own country. He has spent a lot of time in England but now he is

Compare how to poets reflect on old age

Adam Dundon Form 11Y Compare how the two poets, Joseph and Angelou, reflect on old age Both of the poems that I have read give the same sort of message, "don't stereotype older aged people". Both of these women are trying to say that just because you get a bit older doesn't mean that the person inside changes as most people would think. In the poem by Joseph she uses listing to show how many things there are. Whilst in Angelou's poem she just writes it normally with some slang put in there as well, both poems give a different angle on aging but and equal one. In the poem 'When I am Old I will wear purple' by Jenny Joseph, I think she is using the colour purple because it is a colour that stands out, it is not a traditional black or navy blue colour. The colour purple is more of a rebellious colour. She uses purple as a symbol of just letting loose and being rebellious. The message she is trying to put through is that when you are an adult you have to conform and as she says, "We must have friends to dinner." When you get old you can do whatever you want like having a weight lifted off you shoulders, you're free. Most old people today are stereotyped to have walking sticks and to sit at home all of the time in their rocking chairs, but all people are different and I think they should all be treated differently. The poet tells the reader not to stereotype and assume all old

poem comparison essay- two scavengers and night of the scorpion

Compare how language and layout is used for effect in Two Scavengers and one other poem. 'Two Scavengers' describes a specific moment in time; at a red traffic light at 9am,in San Francisco, two bin men, on their way home from work, have a brief meeting with two 'beautiful' people on their way to work. Ferlinghetti uses this encounter to draw us in to asking ourselves about social class and whether it is right to class people in this way. He also manages to link this in with the idea of the 'American Dream' and whether it has been accomplished. Ferlinghetti uses language like 'the high seas of this democracy' to achieve this effect; this could be taken to mean that, although, part of the 'American Dream', real democracy is never easy to succeed. This also suggests that Ferlinghetti, himself, believes that it has clearly not been succeeded in America. Ferlinghetti shows through the poem that he does not 'believe' in the 'American Dream'. For example, 'looking down into', on the surface this line is referring to the fact they (the bin men) are higher and looking down, but it could also mean they look down on the 'beautiful' people because they are happier than them- this demolishes the whole idea of the 'American Dream'. However, it could also be meant to emphasis the great distance between them in terms of social class and status, but, whatever the meaning behind this
