  1. Compare the ways in which the poets present characters in

and working for a long period of time, unlike the "elegant couple" who are still on "the way to his architect's office" at "nine a.m.", therefore they have not even begun to work yet. The comparison of the bin man with the "gargoyle Quasimodo" gives the reader the image that the bin man is hideous compared to the "elegant man". On the other hand, the "elegant woman is "casually coifed", meaning she is stylishly and comfortably arranged dissimilar to the garbage man with a "hunched back".

  2. Compare how the two poets explore cultural issues in their work

The first verse of the poem sets the scene of the man walking through district six, a part of Cape Town. The poet uses descriptive phrases such as 'bearded seeds into trouser cuffs, cans trodden on, crunch...' The words describe the untidiness of this area of Cape Town and how mis-treated it has become. The area is described as being run-down and neglected and this is evidential with the words and phrases that Afrika uses in the first verse. In the second verse of this poem, the poem starts to build up tension with stronger and more influential phrases appearing.

  3. Contrast and Comparison between the Poems, "Two Scavengers" and "Nothings Changed"

Socially, there is a separation of race. In the poets own opinion, the white people think that they are more important and superior to the black people. I know this because in stanza five, Tatamkhulu echoes the voice of the white person and says, "Take it with you, eat it at a plastic table's top, Wipe your fingers on your jeans, spit a little on the floor: it's in the bone." This free indirect discourse highlights the white minority control. The poem doesn't state any other relationships, besides the contrast between the white people and the black people.

  4. In this essay, I will be writing about two poems which are 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes' that is written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and 'Night of the scorpion' written by Nissim Ezekiel.

The poem indicates to us that the couple in the Mercedes are good looking and cool. This is shown by lines 12 and 13, "with shoulder-length blond hair and sunglasses The young blond women so casually coifed." The word 'coifed' tells us that the women must be cool and stylish as coifed means hair which is deliberately styled as if no effort were put into it. We discover from the poem that the man is earning money to buy his classy three-piece linen suits and Mercedes by working as an architect in his own office, as the poem states that they are, "on the way to his architects office," (line 15).
