Mercedes comes to Alabama.

A CASE ANALYSIS IN 7021 GSM INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MERCEDES COMES TO ALABAMA SUBMITTED TO: MR. BRIAN MERRETT Analysts: Christopher Vas, S2123281 Gaurav Jain, S2123652 Jayesh Janardhanan, S2122740 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The world is heading towards rapid globalisation, with more and more companies transcending their national boundaries of operations thereby engaging themselves in international business. With the dawn of the millennium we have seen major business conglomerates spread their wings in order to become global organisations. The rationale of this report is to study the "globalisation strategy"1 undertaken by Mercedes Benz- a pioneer in the manufacture of luxury cars. The objective of the report revolves around the decision that Mercedes Benz took in 1993 to extend it's operations to the world's largest democracy- the United States Of America, as a part of it's internationalisation approach thereby transforming it into a fill line automobile manufacturer from an automaker known just for its luxury cars. This report analyses this shift in strategy of Mercedes Benz, evaluating the elements of shift and various risks involved in it. An effort has also been made to understand the various actions that followed Mercedes Benz's entry into Alabama. The study also briefly describes the challenges Mercedes had to encounter at Alabama and the way it successfully faced

Contrast and Comparison between the Poems, "Two Scavengers" and "Nothings Changed"

Contrast and Comparison between the Poems, "Two Scavengers" and "Nothings Changed" "Nothings Changed" was written by Tatamkhulu Afrika, a mixed race child with fair skin, who was later adopted by a white South African family who brought him up as though he was white, and he only found out about his origins as a teenager. Tatamkhulu lived in a multi-cultural area called District Six, which was destroyed by the white authorities. He feels strongly about this kind of racism towards the black people despite the fact that he has fair skin. In the actual poem, the poet is telling the story from his own experiences in first person. "Two Scavengers" was written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The poem highlights the differences between rich and poor and the working classes, as well as democracy and equality. The poem itself is written in third person and based around a couple of Bin Men and a couple of 'beautiful', rich people. Then, at the end of the poem seems to ask whether America really is a democracy. "Nothings Changed" is set in District Six, based in South Africa. The poet describes District Six as harsh-land, but also goes on to explain that he still feels that it's his home and it's still amiable and natural. I know this because he says, "amiable weeds" on line 8. This is a contrasting sentence because weeds are usually a symbol of bad things, so to use the word amiable to

Compare the ways in which the poets present characters in

Compare the ways in which the poets present characters in "Two Scavengers in a Truck" and "Night of the Scorpion". In this essay these two poems from different cultures will be compared. The similarities and differences of how the poets present characters are going to be compared and the similarities and differences of how the poets portray the people through language will also be contrasted. The people in "Two Scavengers in a Truck..." are garbage men in a "bright yellow truck" and are wearing "red plastic blazers"; this is their uniform and shows that it is not their choice to wear the primary colours which make them appear to have a simple dress- sense but they are forced to wear it. Thus, their uniform reflects their basic lifestyle. However, the "elegant couple" who are presented stereotypically, are in an "elegant open Mercedes" which is much more stylish, fashionable and expensive in contrast to the "garbage truck". The "elegant" man is in a "hip three- piece linen suit" which is smart and classy as oppose to the "red plastic blazers" as linen is pricier than plastic. The "elegant" man is described as having "shoulder length blond hair" and is wearing "sunglasses", similarly the younger bin man also possesses "sunglasses and long hair", therefore proposing that people who look similar, can have completely different jobs. The older bin man is also depicted as

Compare how the two poets explore cultural issues in their work

Compare how the two poets explore cultural issues and attitudes in their work I have been studying two cultural poems. They are called 'Nothing's changed' by Tatamkhulu Afrika and 'two scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes' by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Both poems are referring to a difference between two races or types of people. The two countries mentioned are Cape Town and America. In this essay, I hope to see how the two poets contrast each others attitude and issues and to see how their poems are alike in aspects. The first poem I have been studying is called 'Nothings changed'. The poem is about a black man living in Cape Town. The poem is set during the apartheid when all black people were discriminated against. The poet has written the poem in first-person viewpoint because he wants us to see it from the mans point of view. Writing in first-person makes us feel sympathetic towards the man and feel like he is feeling. The poem basically details how these men have been treated during and after the apartheid and how it has made him, and others, feel. The poet, Tatamkhulu Afrika, was alive during the apartheid so this subject would've been close to his heart and that may be why he produced a poem about it. The first verse of the poem sets the scene of the man walking through district six, a part of Cape Town. The poet uses descriptive phrases such as

Other Cultures Assessment In this essay, I will be writing about two poems which are 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes' that is written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and 'Night of the scorpion' written by Nissim Ezekiel. The poem, 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two beautiful People in a Mercedes,' is set early in the morning, on the highways of Downtown San Francisco, at around 9.00am. There is a couple driving to work in a Mercedes and two garbage men finishing their early mornings work, as they started at 4.00am. The poet, Lawrence Ferlinghetti is not involved in this poem as it is written in the 3rd person. He is basically describing what the differences are between the rich and poor - the rich being the cool couple in the Mercedes and the poor, the two workmen in the garbage truck. We learn early on in the poem that the couple in the Mercedes must be rich, a reason being they are driving around in a convertible Mercedes Benz. It also states that there is an "elegant couple in it," (line 9). The poem indicates to us that the couple in the Mercedes are good looking and cool. This is shown by lines 12 and 13, "with shoulder-length blond hair and sunglasses The young blond women so casually coifed." The word 'coifed' tells us that the women must be cool and stylish as coifed means hair which is deliberately styled as if no effort were put into it. We

Two poems from different cultures-'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two beautiful People in Mercedes'and 'Nothings Changed'.

Compare and contrast of two poems from different cultures- 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two beautiful People in Mercedes' and 'Nothings Changed'. 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in Mercedes' by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, is a poem about four very different people brought together by traffic lights turning red. The poet is protesting against the inequalities within a democracy. 'Nothings Changed' by Tatamkhulu Afrika, is a poem which is also protesting, but about the way black people are treated in a place where the poet used to live, in District Six, in South Africa, where apartheid took place. In the poem 'Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in Mercedes', the poet compares four people. The four people are brought together by the traffic light turning red. The poem is set in downtown San Francisco at 9 O'clock in the morning. First he describes the two garbage men in their truck. He compares them with a very elegant couple in their Mercedes, who have a very different lifestyle. The poet describes the two garbage men as- 'two scavengers up since four a.m. grungy from their route' This phrase creates the image of vultures swooping around San Francisco early while everyone is asleep, because vultures are often described as scavengers. The word 'grungy' also makes it clear to the reader that the garbage men are dirty and grubby. The writer

nothings changed and 2 scavengers

Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes and Nothings Changed Essay The two poems I have been studying are Nothings Changed by Tatamkhulu Afrika, and Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The poem Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes is about stating how the "American dream" is no reality and that not everyone can become rich and not everyone has equal opportunities. Nothings Changed is about the time of separation of black and white people in Africa. In Nothings changed the poem is very personal, as he has experienced the time of apartheid in Africa. He writes to show how although the government has changed the way in which black people get treated has not. Whereas in Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes the writer took a snapshot of the American lifestyle. He seams very disjointed about it and is just writing how it is and has know great feelings about the situation. The poems are also very similar as they are both show how a democracy or change was meant to solve everyone's problems, yet it didn't. In Nothings Changed the writer says "upmarket" this suggests that it is posh and has a rich only type of attitude and that him, or his people aren't welcome. In Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes it says "his architects office"

What impression do you get from each of the two worlds in the poems, and which of the poems provide the strongest contrast and why?

WHAT IMPRESSION DO YOU GET FROM EACH OF THE TWO WORLD IN THE POEMS, AND WHICH OF THE POEMS PROVIDE THE STRONGEST CONTRAST AND WHY? The poems I am comparing are "presents from my aunts in Pakistan by Moniza Alvi", "two scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes by Lawerence Ferlinghetti and "nothing's changed by Tatamkhulu Afrika". All these three poems compare two different worlds. The poem by Moniza Alvi compares the Asian traditions and the western traditions. The poem by Tatamkhulu Afrika compares how white people and black people where treated in Africa after a war. The poem by Lawerence Ferlinghetti compares the world between rich, wealthy people and the poor people in San Francisco. The poem "Nothing's changed" is written by a poet who returns to his homeland after a part of the country was declared as "whites only". The country that the poet calls his homeland is now destroyed and the poet expresses the anger he felt when the place was first destroyed. He now sees new restaurants which look expensive and stylish with a guard at the gatepost. And further down the road he sees a working men's café where people eat without plates from a plastic tabletop. This situation makes him really angry because the white people were seated inside the exclusive restaurant with its ice white glasses and single rose on the table while the black people in Africa ate on

Compare 'Nothing's Changed' with 'Two Scavengers in a Truck', showing how the poets reveal their ideas and feelings about the particular cultures and traditions that they are writing about Both poets convey strong ideas about the inherent divisions that are inherent in modern-day society. Afrika conveys his ideas by writing about racial discrimination and segregation in South Africa, informing the reader about the differences in the quality of life for Blacks and Whites. Ferlinghetti, however, decides to tackle the theme of social/wealth divide in San Francisco, U.S.A. Afrika also describes the landscape, nature and setting in much more vivid detail, using it to represent the history of District Six. Ferlinghetti, who focuses on the people who are the protagonists of his poem. Although set in two very different locations; one in a third world country and another in a developed country, both poets deal with the issue of inequality and prejudice. Afrika and Ferlinghetti both feel very strongly about inequality in society and how people can be discriminated against due to their skin colour or social class. The reader is able to tell that Afrika feels strongly about his particular culture and traditions because he tells part of the poem in first person (singular and plural): 'I back from the glass' and 'We know where we belong'. In this way he vividly conveys the emotions that
