Swine Flu - what should the government of Hong Kong do?

What SARS has bought is not only the physical damage on human bodies who were suffering, but also mental disaster on Hong Kong residents' confidence. This can be seen from the fact that people start to rush mask when a single case of newly discovered disease is confirmed. Despite the outbreak of H1N1 is already a fact in Mexico, the Hong Kong government have never try to close all borders in order to avoid the stepping in of the disease. Is it a wise decision? Or HKSAR should close all borders during flu pandemics? Being an international city, Hong Kong itself should consider the consequences if all borders are closed during flu pandemics. Close all borders may be in some degree a good plan. Nevertheless, this measure is no difference with ruthless and stony. Mexican would felt they are being discriminated and abandoned, no matter they are infected or not. Is this really a must to keep any foreign out of Hong Kong boundary? No matter if the image of Hong Kong would be damaged? All tourists cannot enter Hong Kong, which would severely affect the financial income of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is an international financial centre; it depends much on the exchange of wealth with foreign countries. Once all borders are closed, how can Hong Kong maintain its financial stability? In other words, the policy of closing all borders during flu pandemic are no differ from adding pressure to

presude people to donate blood

The purpose of these advertisements is to persuade people to donate blood. The first 'excuses' advert is a little sketch about a four year old girl dying in hospital because people were giving excuses to avoid donating blood. Similarly the 'Victoria' advert is also a little girl who is talking about when she was a baby, she nearly died but a family saved her by donating their little boy's heart which saved her life but she also owed her life to an unknown blood donator. Both the adverts attract the audience's attention by using emotive subjects like two little girls who may die or who nearly died. They are different as the first 'excuses' advert uses an unhappy message aimed at making the listener feel guilty using reverse psychology whilst the second one tries to stir your emotions making you fell happy that a little girl has been saved encouraging you to become one of those 'unsung heroes'. In the same way, both adverts use simple language with commands such as "we need more excuses, NOW"! Both adverts involve the listener by using simple dialogue especially the Victoria advert which personal pronouns which involve the listener such as " give excuses not blood, if that makes you feel better" and " so please keep your appointment" and a personal message thanking the listener for "saving my life". However, the audience is kept involved as the drama builds up in the first

Alcohol Argument

Alcohol Arshad Bhoyroo My fellow citizens, I stand here today in order to express my views of the growing concern that is destroying our civilization at a global scale, alcohol. At a time when our community strives during tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace, alcohol has rapidly taken us amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. Alcohol has lead to some of the worst problems that our society has ever experience. For example, out of 1,000 adults, 47 are likely to be dependent on alcohol; this is double the amount of people who are dependent on illegal drugs. This is very worrying for our society as people will tend to be frightened of such disorderly community. Alcohol also causes health, social and economic problems and is blamed for causing death, disruption and damage. Although alcohol is seen as a socially acceptable drug, it is in fact an undermining substance which causes chaos and if not stopped, will continue to cause catastrophic outcomes. Alcohol is the complete antithesis to an entertaining drug as it tastes anything but soothing and most people take it knowing that they will lose their conscious self to this world. When a person is under the use of alcohol, it can be concluded that the devil himself is operating inside you. You are completely taken out of this world and cannot control yourself, so what other assumptions can we make?

Should Juveniles be prosecuted as Adults for Serious Crimes?

Should Juveniles be prosecuted as Adults for Serious Crimes? Taking another person's life is an inexcusable crime. These days murderers seem to be getting younger and younger and yet juveniles are not being forced to face the consequences of their actions like adults. This trend is not a good reflection of the value system that is holding society together. First of all, from the age of twelve, moral values are generally in place. Secondly, if an individual is capable of murder at the age of seventeen, their outlook and behavior will unlikely change as they move into adulthood. Equally, if juveniles are put on trial as adults, and therefore given harsher punishments, better programs can be set up to improve the chances of rehabilitation. Finally, juveniles are beginning to use their age as an excuse for executing a crime plan. Therefore, juvenile delinquents must be prosecuted as adults for serious crimes if this frightening trend is to be stopped. To premeditate and carry out a murderous plot clearly indicates a lack of conscience. If a child is properly raised, they should have a clear understanding of right and wrong by the age of twelve. Moreover, the desire to plan and orchestrate the destruction of another human being is not something that should naturally develop in a person's psyche. Given these facts, one can only conclude that people must be held accountable for

Should conscription be banned?

Should Conscription be Re-introduced to the UK? There is a debate on whether the UK would benefit from conscription. If it would, should we re-introduce it? Do we really need conscription in the twenty-first century? Maybe. It would certainly make the UK safer, give young people more opportunities, and help disaffected youths, but does that really out weigh the disadvantages of possible death and restriction of education? Should we go ahead with conscription, or should we not? Firstly, conscription opens up a world of opportunities such as travel, friendships, qualifications and it gives you a very good pay. 83% of army officers said that they have had much better opportunities in the services that they would have done otherwise. Also, 85.7% of top athletes were previously in the army. Therefore, this proves that if you go into the army and decide you don't like it, you can still get a very good job. Clearly, conscription will improve young peoples chances of a good job and their standards of living. Furthermore, you will be able to enjoy a wide range of sports including scuba diving, parachuting, windsurfing and rafting, as well as being able to visit a large number of countries. Also, you will be able to make fantastic new friends, who will be close friends for the rest of your life. Speaking from his own great experiences, Flight Lieutenant Brown says, " I have been able

The Homeless of Britain

The Homeless of Britain "Victims of the System" In Recent years, beggars have become a familiar sight all over the country like forgotten souls; they haunt the streets like poltergeists being ignored and largely left to pass empty handed. They reside mostly in towns and cities trying to catch a lucky break to get themselves out of there situation, but their presence has evoked a lot of bad feeling from many sections of the public. However I would like to point out how much of this bad feeling is a result of ignorance and that the only way is to change our attitudes and take action before it is too late. Of course homelessness is not a condition that just affects poor souls living their daily life on the streets, many more thousands spend their existence "sofa surfing" these people seem to drift wherever they can. One terminology used a lot these days "the hidden homeless" as people like to call them ranges into numbers not far from half a million, to put that number into perspective that is almost twice the population of the city of Swansea. Many say that begging has become an acceptable career path for the "lazy generation" of students who just want to make a couple of quid. To say someone would rough it out on the streets to make such petty cash is outrageous don't you think? But like me you might be asking yourself why is there such a prejudice towards the

Persuasive Writing

04 House Lolage Street Newport Isle of Wight Dear councillor, An issue has arisen. I understand that you must get many letters informing you of the problems bringing our island down, and that reading each and every one must seem extremely tedious for you - and so I thank you in advance for taking the time to read mine. I'm a student of Medina High School, travelling on a public bus to school during the rush hour each morning and, as I'm sure you're already aware of, the traffic accompanying me and fellow students on this journey is horrendous. It is this journey into Newport each morning that brings dread to the hearts of the many thousands that too have to suffer this mind-numbing experience of driving along at a speed of one-mile-per-hour, all to reach destinations that ideally should take at least half the time to reach than they actually do. Problems like this may seem insignificant in comparison to many others you encounter with, and that a financially possible solution may seem distant, but I'd appreciate it if you'd take into consideration some of my suggestions. It is to my knowledge that the island of its 380 km² is home to a weighty 63,874 cars, and so you can only imagine the hassle brought be a large percentage of these cars during morning rush hour. Not only does the slow movement of the traffic produce excess greenhouse gasses, through unnecessary fuel

english gcse of mice and men

Of Mice and Men (LONELINESS) In this essay I will be discussing how Steinbeck presents the theme of loneliness in the story Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The story was set in the 1930s during the great depression in America. The story is based on the characters of George and Lennie. During this time a lot of people were jobless and lost their savings too, and people had to travel very far away to get jobs, which was mostly on farm ranches. George and Lennie had a dream of owning their own little house and a few animals of their own. They found work in a ranch near Soledad. They meet different characters on the farm that all have a dream. Being lonely means to not have friends or friendship and to feel unwanted. Most of the characters are lonely and the only thing that keeps them lively is their dreams. Loneliness is portrayed in the following characters: Candy, an old man with only one hand, Crooks, a black cripple and Curley's Wife. She is lonely even though she is married. And also George and Lennie. Although they are all on the ranch together, they are lonely because of who they are and their history. I will start by looking at the characters. The first character I will look at is Crooks. Crooks is lonely because of his colour, he's the only black man on the ranch and he keeps his distance from the other ranchmen. He's not talked

IS ROMEO A BOY OR A MAN?

Shakespeare's representation of Romeo is of both boy and man. Romeo's language and actions emphasize his attitude and behaviour throughout the play. People associate boys with being: immature, uncivilised, irresponsible, unreasonable and unable to accept punishment. Romeo has unquestionably got several of these characteristics. However people associate men with being: mature, civilised, reasonable, rational, in tune with their emotions and not afraid of showing their emotions. In my opinion Romeo has undeniably got many more of these characteristics than that of a boy. In the following paragraphs I am going to put my argument to you in that Romeo is more man than boy. Prior to meeting Juliet, Romeo's features are undeniably that of a boy. Romeo's yearning for Rosaline mistaking lust for love, "Alas that Love, whose view is muffled still, Should, without eyes, see pathways to his will!" His language is very poetic and over-charged. Shakespeare uses sonnets in this part of the play, which portrays Romeo's attitude. He is in a depressed state of mind, caused by his love for Rosaline. He over-exaggerates everything he says, and creates a drama. This is completely changing his behaviour and makes him seem petty and immature. Romeo appears to be a "lovesick boy," because he is constantly talking about Rosaline. He is so obsessed with Rosaline he is oblivious to the fight brewing

Beauty Pageants All around the world mothers are putting their young girls into beauty pageants. Some of these children can barely talk and just learned to walk. This is not healthy for these girls because they grow up being judged on how beautiful they are and told how they should look. There should be an age limit on how old you have to be to enter a beauty pageant at the minimum of sixteen. It's not fair on the toddlers to be paraded around on a stage, wearing layers of make up and hundred dollar dresses. They should be allowed a normal childhood, something they wont get being graded on their appearance. Beauty Contests don't judge a child by their brains, or their talents, but by how beautiful and skinny they are. How can a parent put their young child into a contest that judges their daughter on her looks? Today's society has become really bad for judging people. Growing up is difficult enough on teens that they shouldn't have to go through being judged before they even reach school. Many girls who enter beauty pageants end up being anorexic or bulimic. They believe that to be beautiful they have to be extremely skinny and to them this is the easiest way to become "beautiful." Beauty can be defined by many things. It's not only how skinny you are compared to others, or who looks the prettiest in today's standards, but by their personality, their talents, and their
