What does J.B. Priestley's use of stagecraft contribute to the Overall dramatic effect of 'Inspector Calls' John Boynton Priestley was born in Yorkshire in 1894. He knew from a very early age that he wanted to become a writer, but decided that he would not go to university as he thought he would get a better feel for the world around him away from academic education. Instead, he became a junior clerk with a local wool firm at the age of 16. When the First World War started, Priestley joined the infantry and escaped death on several occasions. After the war was over he went on to study and gain a degree at Cambridge University. Soon after he moved to London and became a freelance writer. He wrote many successful articles and essays and published the first of many novels, The Good Companions in 1929. He completed his first play in 1932 and went on to write fifty more. Much of his writing was groundbreaking and controversial. He included new ideas about possible parallel universes and strong political messages. 'An Inspector Calls' was written in 1945 but like another of his plays was set in 1912. The play was first performed in two theatres in Moscow in 1945. However the following year it came to the stage in London. 'An Inspector Calls' is known as a well-made play. Its progression is from ignorance to knowledge, not just for the audience but for the characters

Who's to blame for Eva smith death in inspector calls?

Who's to blame for Eva smith death in inspector calls? Mr Berling is the first person the Inspector confronts with the responsibility of the young women^s death. Mr Berling is the type of character that thinks that Titanic is unsinkable and that there will never be a war which is a dramatic irony. Eva had been employed at Mr Berlings factory but had been sacked for leading a strike to get the workers more pay. At first Mr Berling will not accept responsibility which is shown when he says "Still, I can't accept any responsibility. If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we'd had anything to do with, it would be very awkward." Mr Burling shows in this way, that he has a lot of power to say if the workers have a steady income or not and does not care about the consequences. The Inspector thinks that Mr Berling is partly to blame for Eva being so depressed that she killed herself. ^She was out of work for the next two months. Both her parents were dead, so that she^d no home to go back to. And she hadn^t been able to save much out of what Berling and Company had paid her. So that after two months, with no work, no money coming in, and living in lodgings, with no relatives to help her, few friends, lonely, half-starved, she was feeling desperate.^ The second person questioned by the Inspector was Sheila who is the only one who

"An Inspector Calls is a modern morality play disguised as a detective drama." Show how Priestley uses the conventions of the detective story to put over a moral message to the audience. The fact that 'An inspector calls' is a modern morality play disguised as a detective drama, means that the play is written with a unique style. Priestley assists the conventions of the detective story with his intelligent tool of manipulating time. This construction gives a strong moral message to the audience. Priestley includes some basic conventions, such as a protagonist, a victim and also suspects to indicate to the audience that the play is similar to a detective story. One of the reasons that the action of the play is based on an investigation is to not only engage the audience and sustain their interest, but to also create tension and anticipation before the final revelation is revealed. A standard morality play gives messages to the audience that usually teach them a certain lesson that can be used in real life. The resolution of Priestley's play is evidence that there is a morality message to be conveyed. The swift, surprising, ending of the play suddenly puts the audience in the characters' minds. Priestley uses this effect to his advantage by being able to aim the moral message to the audience. The playwright includes the conventions of a detective story in his play, in order to

"An Inspector calls" - Summary.

"An Inspector Calls" "An Inspector calls" is a play written by J.B Priestly in 1945. It was set in 1912. In 1912, the Social Class System was still very strong, i.e. there was a clear division between the rich and the poor. At the start of the play, the prosperous factory owner Mr Birling and his wife Mrs Birling are holding a dinner party to celebrate the engagement of their daughter Sheila Birling to Gerald Croft. Their celebrations are cut short when an Inspector Goole comes round to question them about the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith. One by one every person present is analysed and forced to uncover their role played in Eva's death. Mrs Birling and Sheila have very different personalities. Mrs Birling is a hard-faced, rigid, snobby, self-assured and very confident woman. On stage it would be appropriate to have her near the front of the stage, as she sees herself as somewhat significant. I would imagine her to have her hair back in a tight bun. Correspondingly, she would be tightly corseted and would wear an elaborate evening dress that would place a clear barrier between her class and any other. Her clothes would be a grave colour, i.e. olive or mauve. These colours would reflect her inflexible, emotionless character. Her gestures would also prove and demonstrate the airiness and hard-nosed attitude towards others, even members of her family. She has a

In this piece of coursework I will be writing about J.B Priestley's "An Inspector Calls". We have been asked to write in detail; about how J.B Priestley creates mystery, suspense and keeps the audience hooked on it all the way to the end of the play. It is full of changes, twists and upsets that interest and intrigues the reader. "An Inspector calls" is an unusual play which influctucates tension and has the audience surprised up to the end. In the book there are lots of twists and most of the time there is lots of tension and suspense centred around the characters. One of the factors that makes the play captivating is the use of climax, the way it holds the audience all the way through, building up slowly, gathering the plot as it goes on and then finally ends in a stunning climax, for example the way the Inspector extracts small threads of information from the members of the family and slowly puts the picture together and narrows it down to the main culprit as the climax. The first wave of tension hits the audience when the Birling's and Gerald and celebrating the engagement between Gerald and Sheila Edna the maid say's "Please Sir, an Inspector Called". "An Inspector Calls" by J. B. Priestly - Who invented the formula for a well made play?

English GCSE Coursework - 20th Century Drama Assignment "An Inspector Calls" by J. B. Priestly Who invented the formula for a well made play An Inspector Calls, by J.B. Priestly, is the story of the visit by an Inspector to an apparently normal family, the Birlings. They are celebrating Sheila Birling's engagement to Gerald Croft, who is also present, when the Inspector arrives telling them of the suicide of a young girl called Eva Smith. At first they deny any knowledge of the girl, but as the play goes on the Inspector manages to show that they all helped kill her. Mr Birling had her dismissed from his factory for demanding a small increase in wages; Sheila ordered her to be dismissed from her job in a shop simply because of her pride. Gerald Croft kept her as his mistress before leaving her suddenly; Eric Birling (Mr & Mrs Birling's son) also had an affair with the girl and stole money to keep her living; and Mrs Birling used her influence to deny help to Eva Smith when she needed it most, driving her to suicide. The features needed for a well-made play are: the exposition, entrances and exits, the "obligatory scene", the climatic curtain, mistaken identity, the plot and the dénouement. The exposition is also known as the opening. It is meant to serve as an introduction to the play through providing information on the themes of the play, the characters and the

The Inspector mysteriously arrives at a middle class family's house; the Birlings to question them regarding the case. Try to explain why the play still has such a strong appeal to audiences today? "An Inspector Calls" is a drama written by JB Priestley just after the Second World War in 1944; however the play is set in 1912 just before the outbreak of World War 1. It tells us of the unfolding drama in the Birling family household as they come to realise that they have all contributed to the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith. The play is still frequently performed by both amateur and professional companies and still has a strong appeal to audiences today especially the younger generation, the reason for this is that this tense play has an important message to teach to it's audiences, everybody is responsible for everybody else. The Birlings are a middle class family but are very complacent and consider themselves to be upper class in the society in which the family live in at that period in time. Arthur Birling is the father who is full of his own self-importance. He is a prosperous factory owner whose first priorities are money and trying to keep up a reputable reputation as he aspires to be upper class. His wife, Sybil

"An Inspector Calls" is a dramatic play written by J. B. Priestley. The plot is based on a high-class family's involvement in a suicide of a low-class girl named Eva Smith. In this play, Priestley's main aim is to make the audience discover what's behind the mask of the high class, and also to encourage people to take responsibility for their actions. By using mystery, tension and suspense, this play becomes a thriller genre. Priestley wrote in a way that these were at maximum level all the time. As the story unfolds, the audience tries to discover which of the characters are responsible for Eva Smith's death. Just as the audience was getting tired of having discoveries, the whole play is given a violent twist so that this attracts the audience's attention. The length of sentences also reflects the pace of the actions. In the first act, long sentences and speeches are used to show the comfortable mood of the family. Later on, while the disturbance was increasing, the lengths of sentences were relatively decreasing. This caused a discomfort to the audience. The use of repetition in the play is significant. The repeated words are the most important ones in conversations, like "remember" in the speech of Inspector. This repetition brings both annoyance and attention towards the inspector. Also, these two feelings help the thrill to be increased. The setting of the scene is

"An Inspector Calls" is full of lies and deceit. Write fully about the way Priestley exposes weakness and wickedness not only through the characters on stage but also in society. "An Inspector calls", was written by J.B. Priestley in 1942 and set in 1912. J.B. Priestley (John Boynton Priestley) was born in Bradford, Yorkshire on the 13th September 1894. Priestley was 48yrs old when he wrote "An Inspector Calls". He set the book in 1912, as he was inspired within the years of 1911-1914; this was because, during the period before WW1, Priestley gained much of the experience, which boosted his writing career. With the outbreak of war in 1914, Priestly joined the infantry, at the age of only twenty. By the time he left the army in the year of 1919 he had seen active front-line service in France and had, by a whisker, escaped being killed at least once, when a German shell exploded no more than two or three yards away from him, as well as being a victim of a gas attack. These experiences were to have an indirectly influential effect upon his writing: "I was lucky in that war and have never ceased to be aware of the fact" When Priestly left the army, Priestly finally took a place in Cambridge University to read Modern History and Political Science. Priestly used various degrees of the "seven deadly sins" (pride, anger, sloth, gluttony, envy, covetousness, and lust), to show how
