Macbeth – “Lady Macbeth is the driving force behind the death of Duncan,” Discuss

Macbeth - "Lady Macbeth is the driving force behind the death of Duncan," Discuss In this essay I will be investigating about how the main characters encourage and influence Macbeth into murdering Duncan. I will be highlighting how the main characters of the play, acted their part in Duncan's death. I will be analysing all other factors surrounding the murder of Duncan. Before I arrive at my conclusion, I will study the characters individually. I will study how Banquo, Lady Macbeth and the Witches influenced Macbeth and I will also study Macbeth and how the other characters reacted towards him. I will be extracting quotes from all the scenes to support my comments. "Lady Macbeth is the driving force behind the death of Duncan," is the title and I will discuss it but at the same time I also want to be arguing that even though Lady Macbeth contributed with it. At the end of the day it was still Macbeth who killed Duncan and this fact can't be ignored. The witches clearly had influence over Macbeth due to the fact he responded to what they said, because they implanted the idea that Macbeth could become King. "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis," " All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor," " All hail, Macbeth! That shalt be King thereafter!" (Act 1 scene 3 lines 48-50) Clearly the quote suggests that the witches have predicted that Macbeth will

Macbeth Essay Focusing on key scenes, discuss how Shakespeare presents the change in Macbeth from war hero to evil murderer.

Macbeth Essay - Focusing on key scenes, discuss how Shakespeare presents the change in Macbeth from war hero to evil murderer. Macbeth's multifaceted disposition is unambiguous as he is seen to immerse from the shadow of a dignified soldier into an almost unrecognisable dictator and murderous tyrant. He appears to be driven along by the violence of his fate, almost unknowingly, as he staggers under the weight of his own purposes and the proposals of others; and from the superstitious awe and breathless suspense into which the witches throw him, is hurried on with daring impatience to verify their predictions and with an impious nature attempts to unmask his uncertainty with the future. He proves unequal to the struggle with fate and his moral scruples, as his actions see the direct result of the murders of King Duncan; Banquo; many soldiers; and finally his own death. The destruction of these characters is seen through the protagonist's unfettered ambition and his overwhelming desire for the throne of Scotland. There's neither a definite nor precise date of composition for 'Macbeth,' however, the play was written after 1603 and before 1610, as it is dated after the accession of King James I. Also, an excerpt from the diary of Dr Forman, a playgoer and astrologer, was obtained stating he had attended a production of the play on April 20th 1610. Evidence suggests that

Lady Macbeth - A fiend like queen or lady of remorse?

Lady Macbeth: fiend like queen or a lady of remorse? In the play, Lady Macbeth fits into the historical context as she fulfils her role as that of a hostess. At the time of Macbeth, women were expected to play the role of a hostess in their homes. We discover Lady Macbeth enacts the role of a hostess very well as she receives praise and compliments from Duncan:- "Fair and noble hostess..." [Act One Scene Six Line 23] There is definite irony in this situation. She is respected by Duncan but Lady Macbeth has plotted his murder. We first encounter Lady Macbeth when she is reading the letter from Macbeth, describing his meeting with the witches. Lady Macbeth's first words are:- "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be..." [Act One Scene Five Line 14] At this early stage, we come across Lady Macbeth's objective to be crowned Queen, but this drive is not supplied by the sole purpose of having such a title; it is based on support and love for Macbeth. Lady Macbeth also exposes her evil intentions in order for her plot to prosper:- "That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan..." [Act One Scene Five Line 38] This is Lady Macbeth's plot to murder Duncan, but she has an obstacle in her path, her husband, Macbeth. Lady Macbeth knows her husband well and is aware of his limitations, she feels Macbeth may be too kind and gentle to murder:- "Yet do I fear thy nature: It is too full

Macbeth Essay "Macbeth" is a political and dramatic play although, it has more political elements to it such as, the lady's role in that time (Lady Macbeth's role is quite a significant political issue in the play), kingship, and the natural order. It is this political ambience rather than the dramatic elements of the play, that increases it's relevance to today's society. In this essay, as well as stating my points on why "Macbeth" is more political than dramatic, I will also analyse the dramatic elements involved, which add excitement to the play. Initially, we see that Macbeth's desire for fame and power is at odds, as is his desire for his wife's respect and his conscience. This is illustrated when he gives into her intimidating and manipulative ways, and murders King Duncan (a guest in his castle) in order to acquire the throne for himself. Shakespeare portrays Lady Macbeth as a character who survives on being in control of other people and is a temptress, similar to the biblical character Eve and when not manipulating others Lady Macbeth breaks down and commits suicide realizing her own weaknesses and guilt There is a clear resemblance with Lady Macbeth and Macbeth and Adam and Eve. Lady Macbeth being the temptress who convinces her husband and tries to persuade and manipulate him by challenging him in his pride and stating all the good and positive points on

Macbeth-King Duncan

Historically Duncan was a weak King. To what extent do you think he is a good king in Shakespeares' presentation of him in Macbeth? In 1606, celebrated play-write William Shakespeare created a play that many believe to be among his greatest; Macbeth. Throughout the play we see various themes explored, but none more so than that which shows that one mans greed and thirst for supremacy can obstruct his view as to what is morally correct. King Ducan, holder of the thrown, is described as possessing attributes such as: justice, verity, temp'rance, stableness, bounty, perserverance, mercy, lowliness, devotion, patience, courage and fortitude. I seek to explore whether or not Duncan was deserving of these attributes and deduct if in fact they made him an effective king. Our primary encounter with Duncan is in act 1 scene 2 whereby he is heralded by a trumpet call, this creates imagery of an authoritarian and noble manner and automatically generates respect towards him.The trumpets also suggest that he is unique and of great importance and all attention is automatically drawn towards him. He is followed by his two sons, the eldest first, which would suggest that although he has not yet passed down his thrown, Malcolm, the eldest will be the recipient when he does so. This particular order of entrance promotes the authority and importance Duncan has as King. In the Jacobean era,

Act One Scene 7 might be considered to be one of the most important scenes in Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth'. Discuss why this is so and how you would wish to see the parts of Macbeth and/or Lady Macbeth played in order to convey the scenes significance. I think that Act One Scene 7 might be considered one of the most important scenes in Shakespeare's play 'Macbeth' because in this scene the main plot of the murder of the king is discussed and because this is where the main development of both the character Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin to develop. Also because the audience in the C17th would have taking this as a serious matter as it was considered to be a great crime to murder the king as they were believed to be sent by God, so this scene creates a large dramatic impact on the audience. This scene also is important in a way such as because it is the beginning of the main tradgedy of the play that begins in this scene knowing that Macbeth is doing a bad deed. This scene is also very important because it shows how effective Lady Macbeth influence is on Macbeth, it shows that their love is great and that she has a very strong personality and knows Macbeth well enough to use his weaknesses against him. Part of the dramtic impact upon this scene is that the audience know that Macbeth is getting himself into a chain of evil which will lead Macbeth to his downfall if he does

Assignment B-Macbeth

GCSE English Assignment B-Macbeth How important are the "Three weird sisters" to the play of "Macbeth"? Comment on their dramatic importance, their contribution to the plot and their connection to the development to themes in the play. How does Shakespeare interest and entertain his Elizabethan audience? Comment on his use of language and theatre in achieving this. I believe that the "three weird sisters" play a very important role to "Macbeths" play. The witches are the first characters to appear on the stage. They seem harmless when they first appear on stage, but as we get further on into the play we start understanding what role they are playing and it shows that they are an extreme bad influence on "Macbeth". I think they have influenced Macbeth all through the play for his killings Firstly, the first thing we hear about Macbeth is what a brave warrior he was (Act 1 scene 2 ). He dies bravely too, but he is also a cold calculating killer (act 1 scene 2) he murders Duncan because he wants to be king he also has macduffs family and Banquo killed. Some people think Macbeth must be evil because of all the terrible crimes he commits other think he isn't as bad. Maybe he kills Duncan because he is very ambitious and is persuaded by lady Macbeth or the witches. I believe strongly that the witches persuaded and mixed with Macbeth for his

Macbet- Lady Macbeth's arguments of persuasion

The Tragedy of Macbeth The Macbeth play was written by Shakespeare in the 17th Century and is a Tragedy play. The play has been watched and read all over the world! Macbeth even today has been notified as one of Shakespeare's most descriptive and interesting plays. The play was first acted out at Hampton Court Palace, where James 1 of England was entertaining his brother in law, king Christian of Denmark. The story was an old one but had later been interpreted by Shakespeare, the best dramatist of the time. The setting of Macbeth was placed in the 11th Century, when most people believed in the supernatural. Women's roles were to look after their house and bring up their children. They always had to obey their husbands and for that reason were taken advantage of; on top of this they were treated as sex objects. What makes the Macbeth play so different is that Lady Macbeth was much different compared to the role of which other women played at that time. In Britain everyone was to be a Christian! Once a baby was born, they immediately after had to be baptised. Religion was taken very seriously. This leads to the way that Lady Macbeth becomes such a masculine, greedy, and persuasive character in the story. She cunningly stepped out of line and was dominant over her husband Macbeth. She began preparing her manipulative plan from the day she received the great news! The Macbeth

He was completely astonished when the third bid him "All hail!" King that will be!" Soon after their confrontation with the witches, messengers from the king arrived telling him he had been made Thane of Cawdor. This corresponded so miraculously with the prediction of the witches. Banquo said that these creatures of darkness tell us truths to make us wicked. But now thw itches suggestions had sunk deep into Mabeth's mind. From the beginning to this point where Macbeth has become Thane of Cawdor, he has changed dramatically. He ponders how he could accomplish his goal by one day becoming king.
