Compare and contrast the way the writer's depict relationships between men and women in at least two of the short stories you have studied The short stories Lamb to the slaughter- Roald Dahl (1954), Catbird Seat- James Thurber (1945) and Tony Kytes, the Arch-Deceiver- Thomas Hardy (1894) show how the relationship between men and women can be complicated. In Lamb to the Slaughter the writer has intended to convey a tensional feeling between Mrs Maloney and Mr Maloney because Mr Maloney has something different to do from his occasional routine, he is scared, tired and probably feels sympathy for Mrs Maloney according to his harsh decision. The story focuses on murder, rather than a lustful relationship. It specifically empathises Mrs Maloney because the twist in the story centres around the character Mary Maloney. The story is not finished deliberately and it is left for the audience to discover everything even the characters and their future and what would happen next. Although in Tony Kytes, the Arch-Deceiver there isn't too much of tension created in fact there is a particular relationship between the men and women, it is very emotional and sexual but it summarises the case of recognition, when the women find out the deceit that Kytes caused and his betrayal. Hardy did not like industrialisation and thought men were experts but Kytes was out of control. The author

Compare the Two Short Stories, 'The Speckled Band' And 'Lamb To The Slaughter'.

English Wider Reading Coursework. Hayley Pearcy 11GIo Compare the Two Short Stories, 'The Speckled Band' And 'Lamb To The Slaughter'. INTRODUCTION. The two short stories that I am going to compare in this essay are both written in different eras. The first, 'Lamb To The Slaughter' was written by Roald Dahl in 1954. His stories mainly contained ordinary people doing strange and different things. The second, 'The Speckled Band' was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1892. He was famous for writing the traditional detective story and this is no exception. It is accurate to say that the two different eras in which these stories were written reflect in the content of the stories themselves although portraying a rather different image in each one. 'Lamb To The Slaughter' has been clearly influenced by the 1950's era where there was a growing affluence and in this story there is a perceptible emphasis on household items which reflects this such as 'The thermos bucket' which is mentioned in the very first paragraph and also the 'freezer' and 'cooker' which are mentioned further on. Also there is a reference to the upper class lifestyle, which also links to the rising affluence. This is demonstrated in the drinking of whisky and soda when Mr Maloney arrives home from work and also the ritual of eating out on Thursday nights, something that the

Comparing 'Lamb to the Slaughter' and 'The Speckled Band' In this wide-reading piece I will compare two murder mystery stories: 'The Speckled Band' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and 'Lamb to the Slaughter' by Roald Dahl. My first objective will be to offer a definition of a murder mystery. A murder mystery is a story in which a murder has occurred and detective try to solve who committed the crime. People sometimes identify murder mysteries by the famous phrase 'who dunnit'. The three most important things in my opinion that need to be in a murder mystery are; a murderer, victim and a detective. Without these three things it cannot be a murder mystery. Usually the murderer carries his/her attack with are murder weapon. There is normally a motive behind the attack and clues and information are given to the reader throughout the story, sometimes via a sidekick of the lead detective. The reader has opportunities to guess and suspect the murderer. The setting of a murder mystery is usually a typical murder house gothic mansion with broken windows and set alone on a hill top. There are many twists and turns in the investigation and all is revealed at the end of the story. 'Lamb to the Slaughter' is a murder mystery written by Roald Dahl in 1954. The story is written in third person narrative. Dahl is particularly famous for his children's novels but he also wrote many adult

Both "Lamb to the Slaughter" and "The Speckled Band" shares some of the characteristics of murder mysteries. Explain the similarities and differences between the two stories and say which story you think is more compelling to read. Roald Dahl wrote the story "Lamb to the Slaughter" in 1995. He was born on the 13th September 1916 in Llandolf, South Wales and sadly died in 1991. Some of the other many novels he wrote are the 'BFG' and 'Willy Wonka'. "The Speckled Band" was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who was born 22nd May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland and also sadly died on the 8th July 1930. He wrote many stories on the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and amateur detective. Dr Joseph Bell inspired the idea of the character. In the story of "Lamb to the Slaughter" the mood is warm, friendly and tranquil. We can tell this when the room is described as being "warm and clean". The "two tall glasses" and the "whiskey" create a homely or domestic mood. A bright, cosy and in a way safe atmosphere is created. When the writer describes the main character as being "without anxiety" and to have a "slow smiling air about her" this adds a calm and quiet feeling to the story. When the word "placid" is used the character gives off the idea of peacefulness and contentment while waiting for her husband to return home from work. The beginning of the story is described as a "blissful time of

Consider the differences in the way woman are presented in four short stories, showing how this is affected by the period in which each story is set. In this essay I am going to examine how women have been treated from 1850 to 1950 as shown in four short stories. Women's lives have changed greatly in the last hundred years. At the beginning of the 20th century women's role was to cook, do the washing up, have children and then look after them. Woman could not get their own property, they could not have a divorce and they could not have proper education because they were not regarded worthy to be educated. Everything changed when after World War 1 women got the vote. Because most of the men had gone off to war the women had to do all the basic jobs that the men would have done. The four stories that I am going to examine are Tony Kytes, the Arch-Deceiver by Thomas Hardy, The Son's Veto by Thomas Hardy, Tickets Please by D H Lawrence, and Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl. All of these stories have been written by men so they are all from a man's point of view. Tony Kytes the Arch- Deceiver is set in the middle of the 19th century in the country side next to a town. Tony Kytes is coming back from the market when he picks up three girls which were two of his ex-girlfriends and his fiancée. He gets into a problem because he does not want them to see each other with him so

Compare 'The Adventure of The Speckled Band' and 'Lamb to the Slaughter' referring to the structure, language and characterisation. In what ways are the stories typical of the detective story genre. In this essay I am going to compare the two crime and detection stories 'The Adventure of The Speckled Band' and 'Lamb to the Slaughter' Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 'The Speckled Band' in 1892. It was widely admired as one of the best written and most exciting Sherlock Holmes stories. 'The Speckled Band' is about a middle class family where a murder is committed and Sherlock Holmes is called in to investigate it. He successfully solves the case and we find out that the step-dad kills the daughter who is just about to get married because once the daughter gets married the step-dad wont be able to claim any money from the mothers will. Roald Dahl wrote 'Lamb to the Slaughter' in 1954. Roald Dahl specialised in writing short stories of the unexpected horror and surprise such as 'Kiss Kiss' in 1960. His children's books display a similar taste for the grotesque such as 'James and the Giant Peach' 1961 and 'Charlie and the Chocolate factory' 1964. . 'Lamb to the Slaughter' is about a woman who kills her husband with a leg of lamb and then when the police come to investigate the murder she cooks the leg and lamb and fools the police into eating it. Comparing Roald Dahl's 'Lamb to the Slaughter' 1954 and 'The Speckled Band' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1892.

Comparing Roald Dahl's 'Lamb to the Slaughter' 1954 and 'The Speckled Band' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 1892. Both 'Lamb to the Slaughter' and 'The Speckled Band' are detective murder mysteries. They share some similarities but have many differences. In my essay I will discuss these and the effects they have on the story. 'Lamb to the Slaughter' was written in 1954 by Roald Dahl. It is much more modern than Conan Doyle's 'The Speckled Band' of 1892. In 'Lamb to the Slaughter' the main point to the story is to find out whether Mrs Maloney will get away with committing a murder. Dahl also tries to illustrate that appearances can be deceptive. However, in 'The Speckled Band' the reader continues to read the story to find out who the murderer was and whether Holmes will discover how the crime was committed. The stories are both murder mysteries yet their shapes are almost opposite. The setting of 'The Speckled Band' is a typical old mansion. 'The manor house is very old'. This lends an atmosphere of foreboding and suspense to the story. This is because it is natural to find dark and sinister places scary. Conan Doyle uses descriptions such as 'A picture of ruin', 'Ill trimmed lawn', 'The building was of grey lichen-blotched stone', to show this age. The setting is important in that the atmosphere and the suspense which keeps the reader interested are dependant upon this. In

Both "Lamb to the slaughter" and "The Speckled Band" share some of the characteristics of murder mysteries. Explain the similarities and differences between the two stories and say which story you think is more compelling to read. Roald Dahl wrote Lamb to the Slaughter during the year 1954. During this period of time woman were seen as inferior to men and this is reflected in the writing. The Speckled Band was written in 1892 by Conan Doyle and is a part of the Sherlock Holmes trilogy. In the early 1890's the Victorians had little faith in the police (due to the horrific acts of Jack the Ripper). London was a city living in fear and when the Sherlock Holmes books first become published, the public adored them. This is because Holmes solved all the cases he was involved in, becoming the ideal detective for all Londoners. Holmes was so popular that when Doyle attempted to kill off the character there was public uproar, Doyle received numerous threatening hate mail regarding the matter. The Speckled Band was a typical Holmes detective story, however Lamb to the Slaughter was quite different, it delved into previously unexplored territories in stories at the time. A women murdering her husband in those days was unthinkable. The mood at the beginning of the two stories is very different. Lamb to the slaughter begins with Mary Maloney preparing for her husband's return from work.

Both 'Lamb to the Slaughter' and 'The Speckled Band' share some of the characteristics of murder mysteries. Explain the similarities and differences between the two stories and say which one you think is more compelling to read. The authors of the two books are Conan Doyle and Roald Dahl. The speckled band was written by Conan Doyle in 1892, but Doyle started writing Sherlock Holmes stories in 1887. The Sherlock Holmes stories followed a 'who done it' theme, and were published in a weekly magazine, which gave a new clue, to the story it followed, the following week. Roald Dahl write Lamb to the Slaughter in 1954, a more up to date story as it may be. Dahl started writing war theme stories at the beginning of his career, then he moved onto writing adult stories in the 1950's. Some of these later were turned into screenplays. Lamb to the Slaughter is written in third person, where The Speckled Band is written in first person. Speckled band starts off with Sherlock Holmes' side-kick telling us about previous cases. Then moving on to the case, the story is based on. This case was the ' Surrey family of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran'. The mood set out at the beginning of the story is tense, this is because the way in which new clues are given out to us after a few paragraphs. This makes us want to now what comes next and carry on with the story. We also get a tense mood at
