John Proctor - from the Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller.

John Proctor is a character from the Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, Throughout the play he changes from being a troubled, self-exiled, sinner to becoming a person of high moral standards. The characters in this play are simple, common people that live in the town of Salem in the year 1692. There is a rumor of witchcraft floating about in the town that has led to accusations about many of the townsfolk. The accused are charged and convicted of a crime that is impossible to prove (witchcraft). The reasons the villains select the people they do for condemnation are both simple and clear because all of the accusers have ulterior motives, such as revenge, greed, and covering up their own behavior. The three major points I will be talking about in my essay about are as follows: 1 His entrance into the play where he is talking alone to Abigail and trying to convince himself that he is not an adulterer and that they did not have an affair. 2 when John is reciting the Ten Commandments. 3 where John tells Elizabeth that he are going to confess. In the beginning of the play John Proctor is introduced as a farmer in his mid thirties, that is not a partisan of the town, and shows a very strong sense of self-preservation. The first real conversation he has with another character is with Abigail Williams, where Abigail is trying to make John tell her that loves her, and that he will come

Look at Abigail Williams relationship with John Proctor.

Kimberley Hardy The crucible by Arthur Miller Look at Abigail Williams relationship with John Proctor. What effect does this have on his relationship with Elizabeth? What dramatic effect does her actions have? The Crucible is a play that is based on a true story by Arthur Miller. It is set in 1692, in a small village called Salem. In this essay I am going to examine the affair between Abigail Williams and John Proctor, and what effect this as on his relationship with his wife Elizabeth. Abigail used to work for the Proctors until Elizabeth found out about the affair and sacked her. She is an orphan and is living with her uncle Parris. Her and the other girls from village go to the woods dancing and pretending to cast spells. They get found by Parris, this leads to Betty who is his daughter fainting and going into a state of shock. Mary Warren, the proctors servant also faints. When the villagers find out they assume its the work of the devil as they live in a very religious Puritan society. Abigail and the other girls start accusing people of witchcraft saying that they led them to the devil. In the era of the Salem witch trials accusations of witchcraft and devil worship were taken very seriously, any mention of this would result in hysteria. These accusations get out of hand and soon the hole village is destroyed by the lies. It as been seven months since the affair

Dear diary.

Dear diary Now I know that I usually write a lot of rubbish a short boring paragraph but that's simply because my days generally are rubbish and are almost always boring but not today, today was awesome. I had such a perplexed day that I'm still feeling a little dizzy. It really would have been just another day if it wasn't for my over active imagination and uncontrollable curiosity, but it wasn't and this is how it started... ...This morning Joanne rang me and asked me to go with her, Tania and Elaine to meet her boyfriend John and his three friends. Naturally I hesitated since it was a Saturday and I wanted to stay home and do my homework...yeah right. I got showered and dressed in a record time of an hour, and that's including hair and make-up. I know what you're thinking 'That I'm growing up and becoming less shallow therefore taking less time to get ready' NO WAY. I'm so disappointed in you, you're my diary and you should know me better then that, I simply decided to go for a more laid back and natural look because I was told it makes me look older and smarter. Well we met these guys in the Starbucks on the high street and we all sat down to chat over apple pies and ice cream. Well the guy I was with was called David, Tania was with Aaron and Elaine was with Tony. We had so much fun; David kept stroking my leg under the table and whispering really cute stuff to me. We

During this conversation John Procter enters the room. As Mary Warren sees John Procter, Mary Warren leaps in fright. From this we can see Conclusion that Mary Warren is scared of John Procter. Without having to say anything Mary Warren says, 'Oh! I'm just going home, Mr Procter.' Procter is furious, he had told Mary not to leave the house and she did. He then says that he his looking for Mary more than his cows implying that she is more arrogant than his cows. Mary then replies, 'I only come to see the great doings in the world.' She says this an act of fear. She is scared of Proctor. Proctor, still furious threatens to whip Marry across the arse, if she doesn't go home at that moment and help Elizabeth, John's wife with the housework. The aggression works, she slowly leaves the room to go to Elizabeth. Mary is also present in the room. She is also scared as well as well as being attracted by John Procter. We get to know this as the author describes Mercy as strangely titillated. After, John walks towards Betty, who at this moment is lying in bed, as Abigail interrupts by saying how she forgot how strong John Proctor is. By hearing John Procter is

The Crucible - The Marriage of John and Elizabeth Proctor

The Crucible: The Marriage of John and Elizabeth Proctor The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a study in the mass hysteria which led to the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials. Themes of the play include deceit, love, secrecy and paranoia. These attributes can be given to the play itself, but can also be given to certain characters and their relationships; these have been used by Miller to create tension throughout the play and have allowed him to totally capture the audience personally. Two of the key characters in the play are John and Elizabeth Proctor, a married couple with what seems - to the majority of people in the play - a flawless relationship, but is really one of suspicion, secrecy and fear. To begin with, John is an extremely complex character placed at the heart of the play. He has a strong sense of his morals and he will not suffer fools gladly - he is the first to truthfully give his point of view. Unfortunately, John also has several personality traits which lead to his downfall - and even his death. However, his honour and honesty at the end of the play transform him into something of a tragic hero. John's most obvious weakness is his temptation - his lust for Abigail and his committing of adultery, and his disregard and plain disrespect for his wife, Elizabeth. For most people in Salem, John's actions would have been a great shock as he is a well

Existence vs. Essence in A Brave New World

Tamar Gefen A.P English Due: December 23rd, 2001 Mr. Kalter "Existence vs. Essence in A Brave New World" The human being is an entity of pure essence. It is generated by a blend of intangible human characteristics, which branch from the individual's soul and mental power. This fundamental entity is nearly inevitable. A utopia is an imaginary society organized to create ideal conditions for human beings, eliminating hatred, pain, neglect, and all of the other evils of the world. It is in this nature of society that a person's mental freedom can deteriorate, and its "inevitability" can easily be defeated. Without mental freedom, many distinctive qualities of humanity are lost, and man is reduced to the eminence of animals, whose lives are based upon instinct and existence, rather then free thought and essence. In a Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the society portrayed is one where state control and social stability preside over all free thought and expression, which consequences in a loss of morals, imagination, and truth -in short, a loss of emotion, and therefore individuality. The society does its best to eliminate any sensation of pain, which means that every concentrated emotion, every passion, has disappeared. These artificial beings lead superficial lives, where there

'The Crucible' is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953.

'The Crucible' English Coursework Assignment 'The Crucible' is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1953. It is set in 1962 and based around a witch-hunt in Salem, Massachusetts. Many citizens are tried and hanged for suspected association with the devil and witchcraft. The majority of the accused are innocent. The main story is based very closely on historical facts and is very accurate. The play contains a very strong link to McCarthyism. The hunt for communists and the hunt for witches produces an almost parallel, showing great similarities between the two. Like Joseph McCarthy, the Salem judges prosecuted many people for suspicion of crimes with no significant background evidence. Once these people were accused, there was a weak change of them ever seeing justice and receiving an outcome of innocence. Very few people had the courage to stand up to such accusations, except John Proctor, who not only stood up for what he believed, but was prepared to sacrifice his life to save others. John Proctor is a feared and respected man. He is forceful and dignified throughout the village of Salem. As soon as he is introduced, he shows his forcefulness by disciplining Mary Warren for disobeying his orders. He threatens her with a beating and she "tries to retain a shred of dignity" portraying that Proctor can reduce a person to the verge of tears with a forceful threat, again

Unman, Wittering & Zigo You have been asked to direct a radio production of Unman, Wittering & Zigo. Explore how you, as director, would convey the growing tensions and the changing relationships between John and the boys in Lower 5B. As this is a radio production not a stage play there are certain restrictions on the director: Firstly there are no facial expressions or body language, Secondly there are no props therefore we cannot tell where the setting is; Thirdly, to overcome these problems the director must use: Tone which conveys the loudness and softness of the voice of the actor. Dramatic Pause: is used to convey something important or significant has happened. Sound Effects, which help the audience to visualise the scene in their own minds. The play is set in an English public school called Chantrey, which is a boys' boarding school paid by parents' fees. The school is very traditional but modern with squash courts and the War Memorial cloisters. The Head seems to run Chantrey School well as it has got a good reputation. I know this from pg 2 Line 9 where the Head says "we got 2 V.C.'s" (Victoria Cross: A medal awarded for extreme bravery in battle. John is not told by the Head of any problems or difficulties of Lower 5B. Moreover the Head tells Cary Farthingale (an art and third form French Master) to be John's mentor. Cary is not a good mentor because I know
