This could also indicate that he has not completely cast aside others although he has moved himself apart from society, and hopefully could finally rekindle belief in humanity. Furthermore, his house is described as 'stone' with a sense of dullness, lack of existence, and lack of emotion - which could depict Silas's own condition. This is enhanced by Eliot "his house is close to the edge of a deserted stone pit." The repeat of 'stone' strengthens our sense of Silas as synonymous with the empty, and the adjective 'deserted' continues to add only to our feeling of isolation derived from Silas and perhaps a signal of betrayal.

"To conclude, I would sympathise with Boo Radley more than Silas Marner. Silas chooses to be a recluse by shutting himself off from the rest of Raveloe whilst Boo had no real choice for being shut away from the world. He was made an outsider through the actions of his strict father, who has made Boo suffer the consequences of a past mistake for most of his life.

"In conclusion, it can be said that duty is a highly relevant theme in the novel Silas Marner. After presenting all the characters and exploring whether they have served their duty or not, it can be seen that those who honour their duty are rewarded and those who neglect their duty are punished. It is also recognisable that Eliot has wished to show the theme of duty and its significance right from the beginning of the novel. It is also right to say that the novel is like a fable. This is because the characters that fulfil their duty are rewarded and those who do not fulfil their duty are punished. However, using Nancy's character we can see that not everyone gets what they deserve, as Nancy served her duty yet she was punished."
