Roll of thunder hear my cry? What does the novel gain by the use of Cassie as the narrator?

What does the novel gain by the use of Cassie as the narrator? Cassie is an intelligent, outspoken, self-confident, and independent young girl who is also the narrator of the novel. Roll of thunder, hear my cry, is a coming of the age story for Cassie as she awakens to the true extent of racism in the south over the course of her tenth year. As she narrates the events, this leads her to mature and grow up. There are quite a few factors, which need to be examined to respond to the above question. By looking through the eyes of a child, we get a fresh prospective on the way that the society of Mississippi works. Cassie doesn't have any assumed knowledge and so the readers can ask 'why' with her. Due to her ignorance, she asks a lot of questions and so the readers identify with her, therefore there is more empathy. For example, if she was an adult most people wouldn't explain things to her and the readers wouldn't get to know important things like 'why the land was so important' and we learn in chapter one she 'may not understand that now', but 'Papa said that one day I would understand....I wondered'. An example of Cassie's naivety and ignorance is the Strawberry incident when she doesn't realise that the whites have to be served before the blacks and assumes that 'Mr Barnett has simply forgotten about TJ's order' so she decides to 'remind him'. We as the readers get to see

How does Mildred Taylor effectively portray prejudice during the 1930's Mississippi in her novel, ' Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry…..?'

Cow Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry How does Mildred Taylor effectively portray prejudice during the 1930's Mississippi in her novel, ' Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry.....?' Having read the novel, I have come to the conclusion that the author, Mildred Taylor has portrayed prejudice in a number of effective ways. The novel being set in 1930's Mississippi plays a major role in prejudice being apparent because slavery had just been abolished, yet this didn't have much of an impact on the society in the 1930s. Through the use of various examples, the reader is able to comprehend the prejudice at the time and the effects it had on people. The main theme running in this novel is related to prejudice and therefore all incidents that take place in the novel occur due to prejudice being present. The time it was set in is a huge impact on the prejudice itself as the Wall Street crash had just taken place and therefore, poverty was at its peak. This incident was an excuse characters, such as the Wallaces, had used to blame the whites as being those who put them in the position they were in and if the white race didn't use so many resources at the time, then the Wallaces would have been better off. Mildred Taylor has made the novel's narrator a youth of the black race and also uses first narrative, which has a greater effect on the reader as they are being shown racism and prejudice,

How are the young David and Cassie presented as victims in the novels 'David Copperfield' and 'Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry'

How are the young David and Cassie presented as victims in the novels 'David Copperfield' and 'Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry' 'Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry' is a story about an African American girl growing up in a racist community in Mississippi during the 1930's. It shows her family as they struggle to survive in the racist community, try to keep their land and survive on the little money they get because of the fall in cotton prices due to the economic depression. David Copperfield on the other hand is about a boy growing up in a mid-Victorian world. With his family dieing around him, nowhere to live and people constantly taking advantage of him, David also has a hard time growing up. In Roll of thunder we see the whole story through the eyes of Cassie and how life is for her. Whilst in David Copperfield the story is told by David so we only see how he thought it happened. In this essay I am going to compare the way in which these two young people are treated as victims and whether their characters influence people to treat them inadequately. At home David has memories of a happy childhood, until his mother Clara remarries to a man called Mr Murdstone who victimised him. In the early days of David's existence he describes his life as being picture perfect. 'my mother and I and Peggoty-for Peggoty is quite our companion...my mother reads to Peggoty and me ... there is nothing

How does the writer use characters and events to show prejudice in Mississippi at the time?

bClaire McDonough 10W How does the writer use characters and events to show prejudice in Mississippi at the time? "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" is a gripping novel based on a family who live in Mississippi in the 1930's. Throughout the novel Racism and injustices are a regular occurrence. The story is told, through the eyes of a 9-year-old girl called Cassie Logan. Cassie and her three brothers, Stacey, Christopher John, and little man, are constant victims of racial views. They recognise most injustices and occasionally they plot ways of getting revenge. The worst effect of racism in my opinion was how the black children need to act around the white children because of the colour of their skin. Another serious flaw in the community was the difference between the standard of education between Blacks and Whites. I will attempt to explain each of these and more in order of importance. I will approach this essay by saying that the worst effect of racism is the legal system in those days, and its bias views towards White folk. Those of us, who desire to become teachers, imagine that when they do reach their goal they will have the freedom to teach what they feel appropriate and necessary. However, in the early thirties, in the south, the teachers were told to teach out of a book, which was written by white people. This is not the only defect in the education and how it was

With Reference to at Least Two Incidents Described In The Novel, Show How They Illustrate the Persecution of Ethnic Minorities

Jenna Phipps With Reference to at Least Two Incidents Described In The Novel, Show How They Illustrate the Persecution of Ethnic Minorities The novel, 'Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry' is about a black family's life in the southern states of America in the 1930's. It is written by Mildred Taylor, who is black, and is mainly based around the theme of racism. Much of the novel also deals with themes such as land, education, religion and family. All of these were obviously a main part of Mildred Taylor's childhood as she says that she based the book on her childhood in Mississippi, where she was born, and in Ohio where she grew up. As already mentioned, the novel is set in the 1930's when at the time there was an economic depression taking place which meant that the price of cotton fell dramatically. This affects the Logan Family who farm cotton for a living. The two incidents that I have chosen are in Chapter five when the Logan's visit Strawberry and later on in the book when Mama is fired from her teaching job. When reading these episodes, I couldn't imagine a world where history is told untruthfully to make white people not feel so guilty and where you are judged on the colour of your skin. This made it hard to choose an incident as I thought the parts of the book that dealt with racism were all atrocious stories. The first incident I am going to talk about is when

A Comparison of Cassie and T.J. in the novel 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry'

A Comparison of Cassie and T.J. in the novel 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry' The novel, 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry,' by Mildred D. Taylor is about the struggle between the blacks and whites, about thirty years after slavery. Set in the 1930's, in the Mississippi, where slavery was very much supported, growing up is harsh for a young black girl. The story is about Cassie, aged nine, growing up learning about the harsh situation, fighting her own personal fights and discovering her feelings about T.J. . Cassie has to persevere by remembering her mothers words: 'every body born this earth is something, and nobody, no matter what colour, is better then anybody else.' Cassie, the main character, tells the story from her own perspective; this helps the reader think like her. She is a mother figure and has a strong sense of her individuality, shown throughout the book. She is loyal, inquisitive, clever and forthright. T.J. , also a main character, is quite different to Cassie; he is disloyal, a cheat, lazy and he talks a lot. His disloyalty is shown especially when he lets others take the blame for his own wrong doing like the cheating incidents. He ,like Cassie, is very clever, but uses it in the wrong way. Both Cassie and T.J. speak in the southern dialect and accent. Cassie does not, and cannot accept the way things are between black folks and white folks. This is shown in

Ladies and gentlemen of the court, I have been charged with investigating, and bringing to the attention of the court the entire background and character of T.J. Avery from an impartial point of view. These are my findings. T.J. Avery comes from a sharecropping family which live and work on Mr. Gangers land; they are poor and lack financial independence. T.J.'s father is a weak old man and in consequence lacks the physical strength to punish him, for anything he does wrong. T.J. has almost no principles, so he has no problem with getting others in trouble when he was the one who was the cause of it. One incident was when T.J. had gone up to the Wallace store, and his younger brother Claude had followed, when he was seen up there by Misses Logan she told his mother that he was there, but when T.J.'s mother questioned him about it she just said that he had gone up there to get Claude, who he said was sneaking up there to get free candy, Claude was beaten, he didn't tell his mother that it wasn't him. He shows these attributes again at the end of the school term, during exam time, T.J. had written some cheat notes, and when the teacher who happened to be Misses Logan, he gave them to Stacey Logan who is his friend, but before Stacey could hand them back, his mother saw that and interrogated him about it and then proceeded to punish him in front of the entire class. Prior to

Compare and contrast the different cultures, which are shown in the short stories 'The Gold Cadillac' and 'A Stench Of Kerosene' by the authors Mildred Taylor and Amrita Pritam.

09/05/2007 Compare and contrast the different cultures, which are shown in the short stories 'The Gold Cadillac' and 'A Stench Of Kerosene' by the authors Mildred Taylor and Amrita Pritam. In the short stories 'A Stench Of Kerosene' by Amrita Pritam and 'The Gold Cadillac' by Mildred Taylor both authors follow the conventions of a short story to create an impact on the reader. In 'The Gold Cadillac' Taylor creates a large impact on the reader by showing how the young girl Lois is confused by racism and slowly develops a fear of it. This helps the reader to clearly see how racism affects families and cultures. 'A Stench Of Kerosene' is very similar. Pritam creates an impact by portraying prejudice, not against race but against sex. She portrays this prejudice by showing the reader how women are treated badly in an Indian society and how men are valued more in society. By focusing on these topics both authors give us their views on racism and female powerlessness. 'A Stench Of Kerosene' is about a mother who lives in India in a matriarchal society and is concerned about the betterment of her son called Manak. Manak's mother wants him to have a son, as she wants the family name to carry on. After seven years of no children with his current wife Guleri, Manak's mother buys him another bride while Guleri is away, in the hope that she will be able to give Guleri a son. When his

The Chrysalids

THE CHRYSALIDS Trace carefully the stages of David's increasing awareness of the dangers of contravening the image of the norm, bringing out clearly the increasing fear he feels for his own safety and that of the rest of the "group" David increasing awareness of the dangers of contravening the image of the norm, stems from 2 parallel processes; as he grows up he understands more of what is happening around him and the nature of his dangerous society, and also through experiences and incidents in which he is involved; which leads him to a greater awareness of the dangers of being different. The first incident occurs when David has these strange dreams of a city that is non-existent in Labrador and tells Mary about it; Mary then warns David not to talk about his dream, "she went on to warn me very seriously not to mention it to anyone else," David although at this point is not aware of the dangers of being different, but nevertheless he takes the advice of his sister. The effect of this on David is quite powerful; he takes the advice of not telling this to anyone else and more than that; this piece of advice from Mary, kept him from telling anyone else about his special "understanding" that he has with Rosalind, "Without it I might have mentioned the curious understanding I had with my cousin Rosalind," this is due to his powers of ESP (although he doesn't know it yet), that

How are the young David and Cassie presented as victims in the novels, 'David Copperfield' and 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry'?

English Coursework- How are the young David and Cassie presented as victims in the novels, 'David Copperfield' and 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry'? My coursework is about the novels 'Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry' and 'David Copperfield'. Both novels concentrate on the main character and the treatment they receive. 'David Copperfield' was written in 1850 and 'Roll of Thunder...' was written in 1977. The narrator in 'David Copperfield' is remembering his past life and experiences. As he becomes older in the book his life changes. In this piece of coursework I will write about the similarities and differences of David Copperfield and Cassie Logan as victims. I will write about each characters home life, school experiences, their treatment from others and how they each respond to the treatment. David is born into a loving family. However, as he gets older, he is victimized by Mr. Murdstone. When David is first born his young mother Clara and kind nurse Peggotty make his home life seem quite idyllic. David is treated well by Clara and Peggotty and is sheltered from the outside world. However, Clara soon meets Mr. Murdstone, who she falls in love with. David is not pleased for this man to enter into his life. 'I didn't like him or his deep voice...' (27) This indicates that David is skeptical about Mr. Murdstone and perhaps that he is worried for himself and his mother when this
