Abigail Williams is the most responsible for the death of John Proctor. Abigail was an intelligent and very mischievous girl for the age of seventeen. Abigail had an affair with married John Proctor. After the affair is discovered by Elizabeth, Abigail is relieved of her duties at the Proctor’s home which she was the servant at. Abigail falls in love with John and will do anything to have him. She practices witchcraft with other girls of the town along with Tituba, the servant from Barbados. The girls are caught by Reverend Parris. The girls are questioned about their doings in the woods, and that is when the drama starts. Abigail along with all of the other women in the town accused one another of working with the devil. No one is able to get the truth out of anyone and the accused people are getting a trial. Abigail is so in love with Proctor that she said that she will be willing to kill Elizabeth so that she would savatage his life just to be with him.
If it wasn’t for her falling in love with John then he wouldn’t be put on trial for anything. Abigail got him involved with the witch trials because John wanted to go back to his wife and he didn’t want Abigail in his life at all. After Abigail came into his life he started not believing in himself. He was struggling in life and with this family life. Proctor still wants to dismiss the hearings but his wife uses his guilt about adultery to extract a promise that he will expose Abigail as a fraud. As a result of being involved with the witch trials he finds himself accused of being a witch. After being tried and condemned to death, John refuses to confess to save his life. He didn’t want his name to be ruined by signing that confession. If he did his life would be ruined people would think of him as being evil when his name would be mentioned and he would have been probably killed. He was finally caught into a lie by Mary Warren. After that John Proctor is hung to die.
