The Strength Within
Throughout John Steinbeck’s short story “Chrysanthemums,” the main character Elisa is portrayed to be a bright, strong, energetic young woman, who because of this tends to be very passionate about the things that mean the most to her. Mr. Steinbeck shows this in his story by using many different types of word combinations as well as leaving his reader with enough lead way to be able to make their own assumptions regarding Elisa.
Elisa is introduced to the reader in her garden where she is working on her crop of chrysanthemums for the year. Elisa’s first description is that, “Her face was lean and strong and her eyes were as clear as water (260).” This gives the reader a chance to let their imagination decide what Elisa looks like so they may go through the story with a picture of her. When the words strong and lean are used together muscle is one thing that comes to mind. The face of a women who spends many hours of her day out in the sun working. Her hard work gives to her a strong look. The sun darkens her complexion which is softened by her eyes that are compared to be as clear as water. The water color of her eyes is not to be compared to that of a glass of tap water, but rather to that of an ocean or creek with its purity spilling from every pore. This small description gives much as to who Elisa is and helps the reader become more familiar with her. From this the reader finds that Elisa is a hard working, pure young woman who is obviously passionate about what she does on a day to day basis.
