Rianne Summers fiddled around with the frequency dial on the car radio until she finally found a station

Rianne Summers fiddled around with the frequency dial on the car radio until she finally found a station, then turned up the volume and began singing along with her three best friends. As they sang along to their favourite band, Rianne glanced out of the window at the tranquil Scottish hillside. She was supposed to be spending the weekend with her boyfriend, Kevin but the last thing she wanted was to spend the weekend watching rugby. So, when Kerry, Amy and Lisa invited her to go to Scotland with them she jumped at the chance knowing that she would be able to spend a quiet, relaxing weekend away from her busy home town of Basildon.

"Someone pass me the map, I haven't got a clue where I'm going!" Rianne said to the others who seemed to have forgotten the fact that she'd never been to Scotland before either.

"I think you take the next turning on the left." Amy West said looking at the map with a frown on her face.

"Would help if you were looking at the right page." Kerry told her, snatching the map out of her hands and turning it to the right page. After about five minutes they'd found where they were and were heading along a narrow road in the direction of "The Moss Side B & B" where they would be spending the following four days.

"I hope the landlady's not one of those nosy old cows who makes all her guests be in the house by 10, I've lived with one of those for 18 and a half years, the last thing I need is another one on my case." The others laughed at Lisa who was obviously referring to her mum.

It didn't take the girls as long as they thought it would to reach the house yet when they finally arrived the first thing they did after parking the car was to get out and stretch their legs and sore bums, after seven hours of driving.

"I'm not getting back in that car until we have to go home." Rianne laughed as she slowly and wearily made her way to the large wooden door of the bed and breakfast.

"Yeah, until you find out that the nearest shop is two miles away," Amy teased, "and I know you Rianne, you rely on that car to get you everywhere."

"You can talk, 'Rianne, give me a lift to college, Rianne, take me to work.' You rely on it more than she does!" The others mimicked.

Kerry stood in front of the large house, which looked more like an old monastery than a B & B. They had all imagined that the house would be small and cosy with only a few bedrooms but with the number of windows, the house probably had about fifteen to twenty rooms. The house was set on wooden decks, which circled the house and acted as a balcony. The wooden stairs that led up to the house were old and worn out and looked like they were ready to give way. The dark walls of the house were half hidden by masses of overgrown, tangled creepers.

"This looks like that house we had to draw in art last week, I hope our rooms don't reflect the outside of the house and if they do then it looks like I'll be getting straight back in the car after all." Kerry told the girls as they stared at what would be their home for the next four days.

Kerry was in her second year of studying A-Level art at her local college and this long weekend was a break away from her work before the pressure of her end of year exams started to pile on. Yet she had still brought her sketch book and art materials in case she was inspired by the peaceful Scottish Valleys and the evergreen appearance of the hillsides, which stretched into the distance. She was very calm and always got the girls out of trouble. Amy, on the other hand, was the one who always got them into trouble in the first place. She was the type who spent every weekend partying and ignoring her studies yet she always seemed to get top marks in her exams. She was studying A-Level dance and media studies at the same college as the others however she seemed to spend most of her time on campus studying boys. Lisa, who was studying A-Level maths and travel and tourism, was one of the most sensible of the four, although she was always up for a laugh. However, unlike Amy who couldn't say no, she would never be pressured into anything that she didn't want to do. Then there was Rianne, one of the most popular girls at their college and was the envy of many girls they knew. She always looked presentable and didn't need make-up to look her best. Despite this she never boasted about her looks and last summer when she was offered a modeling contract she turned it down, as she believed that her studies were far more beneficial than any modeling job. She was studying maths with Lisa and human biology and although she'd been dating her boyfriend, Kevin, for two and a half years, Kerry, Amy and Lisa always came first.

After a little heated discussion, Amy was chosen to knock on the door of "Moss Side." They'd left all their luggage in the car and had decided to look around the grounds first. The others waited at the bottom of the creaky steps as Amy reluctantly knocked on the door. She turned around to the others who watched with anticipation. Like she always was when she was nervous she couldn't keep still and danced around on the creaky wooden slats. Kerry started laughing at her and so Amy broke out into a little dance when all of a sudden the girls went quiet and put on a straight face. She turned around to see a tall, skinny, elderly lady standing at the door, shaking as if she was starring in a Stephen King thriller.

"Hi, um, we, ur, we're....." Amy stuttered.

"We're booked under the name Kerry Long and we've come for four days. We were supposed to arrive for half two but we got a bit lost." Rianne came to her rescue.

"It's so hard to find someone to ask directions, mind you, the sheep were quite helpful. "Amy laughed at her own joke before realizing that none of the others were. Kerry glanced at Lisa who gave her a worried look as the followed the silent landlady inside the old B & B.

"I have a few cats, they might take a liking to you but they never seem to go any higher than the first floor, they usually stay on the ground floor with me." The old woman muttered as she led them up to the second floor.

"Why is that? I mean, I'm allergic to cats anyway but how come they never go to the second floor?" Amy asked curiously.

"No real reason, it's like someone who's scared of heights not going too near the edge." Amy looked at her friends who shared the same suspicious thoughts as she did. They continued to follow the woman up the winding stairs. The house wasn't as big as it looked from the outside, however, the furnishing was similar to the outward appearance, dark, old and as if it had more to it than met the eye. As they had entered the house there was a square hall with the stairs straight ahead and two doors either side. They hadn't been into the rooms, or the kitchen, which was at the end of the square hall yet Kerry, being the nosy, curious type had whispered to Rianne that they would soon find out once they were settled into their rooms. At the top of the stairs there were several rooms yet the landlady, whose name they discovered was Rose, had led them straight up to the third floor. At the end of each corridor there was a flight of stairs leading up to the second floor. When they reached the second floor, where Rose had decided they would stay, there was a long, narrow corridor, which had rooms on one side. Each door was wooden and had a plain doorknob yet when they reached their rooms the first thing they noticed was that the doors were scratched and the doorknobs had initials engraved onto them. On each door there was a number and letter.

"You'll have to split into twos, the only room big enough for four is downstairs but it's in bad condition and I don't usually allow people to stay in there."

"Are there many other guests staying here this weekend?" Lisa asked Rose, who fumbled with the rusty key to the first room, which was room 12.

"I've got two couples booked but they haven't arrived yet but they shouldn't disturb you, they’re staying on the first floor. This, here is one of your rooms, and the other one is there." She said, pointing to the room next door. She took the key out of the door after having unlocked it but didn't open the door.

"Where's the key to that room?" Kerry asked turning the locked door handle.

"They both share the same key."

"Do all of the rooms share one key then?" Rianne asked, confused.

"No, just these two room, I imagine you young girls ...
