Trace and explain the changes that take place in Silas Marner’s life and character from his being a “young man of exemplary life and ardent faith in Lantern Yard” to him being a respected and accepted member of Raveloe’s village community. What influences on him do Eppie, the Casses, Mrs Winthrop and Nancy Lammeter have? What part do George Eliot’s Victorian values and circumstances play in his life story?

I think Marner was too much of a trusting person. He was grateful for his friends and enjoyed their company. He believed in their words and never thought they’d turn against him, which is why it was such a shock for Marner when his best friend set him up. I think Marner was also an unconfident man, especially since he was an outsider and looked different from everyone else, and needed his friends around him to make him feel good about himself. In Raveloe, without his friends he turned to money as company. He knew he couldn’t get hurt emotionally by money as it doesn’t have feelings, so his riches became obsessive for him. Silas Marner was a man of faith and God motivated him and made him happy. His faith collapsed once he found God didn’t prove him innocent against evil, false claims against him. Without his faith, what has he to live for?

Marner’s job was to be a weaver. The other skill he possessed was to make herbal remedies. He couldn’t really do anything else handy. This made it harder to get a job in Raveloe. He didn’t want to make herbal remedies in Raveloe as it reminded him of Lantern Yard. The shock of his best friend severly betraying him made Marner flee Lantern and alone he became depressed and lonesome. Marner probably didn’t want to make friends in Raveloe because he was emotionally scarred and didn’t want to get hurt again. I expect being betrayed like this came as a big shock to Marner as he was so close to his friend. Everything was near perfect in Lantern then suddenly everything went wrong and everyone turned against him. Marner really believed in God and was a dedicated Christian before he was betrayed, then he was thrown out of the church for pleading that he wasn’t guilty. With his faith in tatters, he must have been angry at God for not helping him when he was being accused of something he didn’t do.

In Lantern, his life revolved around the church and now that had been taken away from him he had no social life. He found it hard to make friends and resorted to not making any. In Raveloe he stayed in his house all day and became a recluse, only leaving his small cottage to gather food or firewood. In Raveloe no one knew Marner’s past, therefore no one understood him. Marner felt secluded and isolated from the folks of Raveloe and couldn’t communicate with them. Marner didn’t like the scenery in Raveloe. Whereas in Lantern widespread hillsides were in ...
