can’t you see what will happen? You’ll lose your money to Lambert
and Butler, won’t be able to afford to go out or socialise with your
mates; it will all just be a downward spiral.
Maybe that doesn’t bother you, maybe you think that I’m just
being overdramatic. But how about this? If you carry on smoking until
you’re older, you will be at a much higher risk of heart disease, lung
cancer and respiratory problems. These aren’t illnesses that will just
go away with a few spoons of Calpol or a couple of antibiotics. No,
they are serious, so serious in fact that you can die from them. That’s right, by smoking now you are literally killing yourself. Not so cool now, hey?
I am not saying that if you smoke now it’s going to be easy to stop.
I am under no illusion of that. There’s no magic fairy who’ll come in
the middle of the night and wish away your addiction. It is, however,
going to get harder and harder to quit the longer you smoke. Why not
now then? What is a few months pain, struggle and craving if it will
save your life?
You are a teenager, not a little child anymore. You can’t go
blaming anyone else for you smoking. You are the one who strated,
you are the one who’s continued to smoke for whatever the reason and
so you are the one who has to stop.
I am not trying to work miracles. I do not expect every reader of
this magazine to quit smoking today. I just want you to realise the implications it has on your future. I’m sorry, if you’re sat there thinking this is unfair; you’ve never touched a cigarette before and I’m here talking as if everyone is stupid enough to smoke. I just hope that this article has made you think seriously about ever doing it, and maybe you’ll spread the word about how bad smoking really is.
But you lot sat there who do smoke, you who go out every day and
waste your money on cigs for what? To look cool? No doubt half of
you will put this magazine down, and in an hour’s time will be at your
usual hang out smoking with your mates. But I hope I’ve made some
of you, at least, see sense in what you are doing. Stop. Stop before it’s too late.
