Journal – Sibling Rivalry
I personally do not feel any difference in being the only child or having a sibling. Being the only child has both advantages and disadvantages. Parents tend to buy their only child whatever he/she needs. This can make their child very possessive in the future. Being the only child can also lead to being over pampered by parents and relatives; however, this can have a drastic psychological impact on the child. The child may take everything for granted. Only children can also be more mature as they often only relate to adults at home. Having a sibling on the other hand, has its own pros and cons. When you have siblings, you can learn how to get along with people a bit more easily. Children will also develop an instinct to share things with others. However, jealousy easily grows in between siblings due to filial favouritism. Furthermore, siblings have to share room and the youngest one always gets away with everything. Having siblings can be very annoying and distracting especially when one tires to sleep or study. If you have siblings with a small age difference, they would most likely end up in the same school as you and they will always have some way of finding out what you are doing and who your friends are.
