Tourism in Hong Kong

Introduction:

Tourism is a vast worldwide industry, which includes the transportation, the lodging, feeding and entertainment of the tourist.

Tourism is one of Hong Kong’s most important service activities and it is the third largest source of foreign exchange earnings. In the early 1990s, nearly 9 million tourists visited Hong Kong each year, spending more than $7 billion annually. Most visitors came from Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and other locations in East and Southeast Asia. Many European and North American tourists also visited.

According to United Nations’ definition, a tourist is a temporary visitor staying at least 24 hours but less than one year in a country other than his own place of residence when the purpose of his journey is either (a) leisure, recreation, holiday, health, or study. (b) Business, family, convention congress, military personnel, diplomats, resident students and those who accept employment in a foreign country are not considered tourist.

The main purpose of this coursework is to find out what are the characteristics of tourists arriving in Hong Kong. This coursework will be focus on the following three stresses:

  1. Can a pattern be identified in terms of the length of stay with tourists who visit Hong Kong?
  2. What motivates people to visit Hong Kong?
  3. How would the tourists think about Hong Kong? Will they come again?

Hypothesis:

Can a pattern be identified in terms of the length of stay with tourists who visit Hong Kong?

Yes, a pattern can be identified in terms of the length of stay with tourists who visit Hong Kong. After the Asia Financial Storm, there are fewer tourists from Asia, because of financial straits. Also because the Hong Kong’s rate of exchange is increasing as the U.S. Tourists have to pay more money to exchange Hong Kong dollar. Therefore, they would rather go to other countries where the exchange rate is lower and the index of life if lower. The length of stay with tourists who visit Hong Kong depends on how tourists feel about Hong Kong and their purpose of traveling. If they come here for visiting relatives and friends, they might stay more than one week; If they come here for vocation or business, they will stay 2 days most because business conference usually held 2 days most and they are sent my their company not because they like Hong Kong; If they come here for spending holidays such as shopping, food, cultural destination… they may stay within 1 week; If they come here for stop over, they may just stay for one day since there is no point to stay longer; Also a possible factor that might affects the length of stay is how they feel of Hong Kong and the impression they have. If they feel comfortable and enjoy staying in Hong Kong, they will not leave very soon. The longer time the tourists stay, the more foreign exchange Hong Kong gain. Tourists have to spend more than 500 HK dollar everyday on transportation fees, hotel taxes, food, clothing… So the longer time they stay, the more foreign Hong Kong gets. Therefore, we can say it is mutually beneficial for both Hong Kong and tourists. Tourists get what they want and we get what we want. Another factor that might affect the length of staying in Hong Kong is attractions. Hong Kong has a variety of cultural attractions and activities. The Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival are annual events. Professional music companies include the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Dance Company. The territory has a thriving film and television industry. One of Hong Kong’s most popular actors is Jackie Chan, who is known for his starring roles and stunts in action movies. The last factor that might affect the length they stay is because the total land area of Hong Kong is small, comprising only 1076 sq km (415 sq mi). There are not much cultural destinations, shopping malls for the tourists to visit since Hong Kong is very small. They can discover Hong Kong in a very short period of time since the transportation system in Hong Kong is very prosperous. Hong Kong has an extensive network of roads in the New Territories, in Kowloon, and on Hong Kong Island. This network is supplemented by the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), which connects Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. The MTR serves nearly 800 million passengers annually. A 33-km (21-mi) long electric trolley line operates on Hong Kong Island, and ferries shuttle between the mainland, Hong Kong Island, and all other major outlying islands. Therefore, when tourists come to a stage where they have discovered everything they want to know about Hong Kong and there are no more places for they to go… then there is no point for they to stay in Hong Kong since the living index in Hong Kong is quite high. At this stage, most of the tourists will choose to leave.
