The persecution of the Jews began in 1933 when the Nazi party came into power in Germany. The persecution began with all Jews being banned from the civil service. Jews were kicked out from any job to do with the government including Schooling, Police and healthcare.
The next step in Hitler’s plan was to make Jews feel unwelcome in Germany. Jewish shops were marked with a yellow star or the words ‘Juden’. Jews had to sit on different seats on buses and trains. Schools began to teach anti-semetic ideas to pupils.
In 1935 Jews were banned from the Army, many Jews had been in world war 1 and been devoted soldiers, they had to leave. Nuremburg laws were passed. Jews had their citizenship striped off them and any form of marriage or relations between Jews and non-Jews was prohibited. If these laws were broken, a prison sentence was to be issued. When these laws were passed Jews were treated as foreigners or ‘aliens’. There was further racial harassment from the German citizens on the Jews.
In 1936 the persecution of the Jews stopped. There was the Olympic games and the worlds opinion mattered on what was going on in Germany, therefore Hitler relaxed his racial policies. However Jews were still banned from professional jobs and Jewish traders were put under pressure to ‘sell’ their business.
1938 was a very big year for the persecution of the Jews the attacks on Jews became fiercer. Jews had to change their signatures, men’s had to include ‘Israel’ and women’s had to include ‘Sarah’. Jewish passports were stamped wit a J, these to acts discriminated Jews further and people knew when they saw a Jew.
In late 1938 a Jew shot dead a German embassy official in Paris. This triggered a full scale assault on the Jews in Germany. Jewish property was smashed, 100 Jews were killed and 20,000 were sent to concentration camps. This was called Kristallnact or ‘crystal night’. The Jews were blamed for this outbreak of violence. The Jewish population was fined and made to pay for the damage to German property.
During the war there was more extreme action taken against the Jews. There was a lack of care from the rest of the world and Hitler carried out his plans.
