How Did Protestant Politicians Explain The Social, Economic And political Differences Between Catholics And Protestants?

Protestant politicians clarified that the differences between Catholics and protestants in terms of political, religious and cultural differences. Several politicians such as Ian Paisley had very extreme views on why these differences existed. Other politicians claimed that discriminations did not exist against the catholic. The Prime Minster at the time was Terence O’Neil who was willing to improve things for Catholics.    

A vast majority of protestant politicians believed that Catholics did not face any political discriminations and local election were carried out fairly.  The Substantiation the some nationalist councillors were elected proved this. Other politicians like Ian Paisley believed that Catholics were not interested in politics due to the fact their royalty laid with Rome and the pope. For these reason politicians like Ian Paisley thought that Catholics could never be loyal to the government of Ulster and were in fact traitors. Politicians explained that Gerrymandering was simply done to stop the popish traitors from entering local councils where they would betray the people of Ulster by forging strong links with southern Ireland. It was also believed that if Catholics had a greater voice they would enact laws that would alienate protestant for example the in the south divorced was banned in 1925. Not all politicians felt this way. For example, Terrance O’Neil   realised that the political differences between Catholics and protestant was not simply about the alleged royalty to Rome.

A quantity of politicians alleged that the RUC, the courts and the B’ specials did not treat Catholics unjustly. They declared that Catholics were treated unsympathetically because they committed more crimes. The Catholics devotion to the south and the Catholic Church made them an intimidation to the security of Ulster. For this reason a close eye had to be kept on their whereabouts.
