The long term consequences of this were the Orange Order being set up to celebrate the victory over the Catholics with marches ever year. The Orange Order where set up over 100 years after the Battle of the Boyne to pay respect for the apprentice boys and celebrated the effort made by the apprentice boys during the siege on Londonderry. This caused violence between the Catholics and the Protestants as they orange order march in Catholic places and this caused a lot of violence between the apprentice boys and the Catholics.
The Irish Republican Brotherhood caused the Easter rising in 1916 as they took over parts of Dublin in a protest against the idea of Home Rule being abandoned. The republicans were led by Padraig Pearce in an attempt to make Ireland a free state. 2000 Irish Nationalist went into Dublin and prepared to fight a massive military force. After a few days the Irish were defeated and left Dublin severely damaged. After the rising it became obvious Britain couldn’t keep all of Ireland.
The short-term consequences were that many Irishmen now supported the Republicans and wanted independence from Britain. This put a lot of pressure on Britain and lots of support against British rule made it hard for them to keep power in Ireland. The nationalist party Sinn Fein grew in strength and the IRA was formed. This put more pressure on Britain as it gave them a political party to compete against and a terrorist organisation which would put lots of pressure on them as this gave them something more to worry about as they could attack the British rule in Ireland. Many of the leaders in the Easter Rising were executed and this gave more support to the anti British campaign in Ireland. The main influence in the Easter rising, James Connolly, was executed and with this action more hatred for the British grew as now many more Nationalists started to support the actions they were taking and this put more pressure on the British government to take action about the rule in Ireland.
The long-term causes were that Sinn Fein became very influential and is still a major party in Ireland today. This has been a part of the terror in Ireland as they have been able to support the IRA. Anti British events were organised to celebrate Irish martyrs and this put more pressure on Britain and the way Ireland is being run. De Valera became a huge anti English force in Ireland and many of his actions in Ireland had support from the USA and caused England a lot of problems. The Easter rising could be seen as a success in many peoples eyes as after this event, it began the start of trying to get freedom in Ireland.
On January 1972 on Sunday the 30th of January, there was a huge protest march against internment organised by the civil rights movement. Internment was the right to detain anyone without charge or trail if they were suspected of terrorist action. 15,000 people defied a ban on marches and gathered in the centre of the city. Stones from the protesters hailed troops. There was a lot of confusion over what happened next. 13 people were shot dead by the British army as they claimed people in the crowd have fired on them. As a result they returned fire killing 13 people in the crowd. An inquiry followed which some people classed as a whitewash for the British army.
The short term consequences for Bloody Sunday was the hatred of the British army grew as they were now seen as a force of hate and not a force to help protect the Catholics in Northern Ireland. This event increased the support for the IRA in Ireland, as people believe that they were the people who could force the British out of Ireland. With this newfound support the IRA increased their level of activities causing more troubles in Northern Ireland for the British army. More funding for the IRA came from America to help with the troubles they caused in Northern Ireland. All this action split the two countries even further and it seemed that no compromise would ever be made.
The long-term consequences for bloody Sunday were that the controversy of what happened after all these years are still around and no one is completely sure what really happened on bloody Sunday. The enquiries, which followed after bloody Sunday, were not completely trustworthy. The first enquiry was seen as a whitewash for the British army as they ruled in their favour believing the were fired on from the crowd, other enquires followed but still no one could be sure what really happened. The view of the British army is still the most believable but still no one can be sure what really happened. This has frustrated the Irish and the British as still the truth shall not be known. It is still very controversial and the day’s events will not be known to this day. Bloody Sunday has become a symbol of British interference in Ireland and will always been seen this way. From these days events direct rule from Westminster followed and Northern Ireland was not allowed to run itself from Belfast, which has caused again more controversy.
In conclusion Northern Ireland has always been very controversial and has never been able to sort itself out. It has always been plagued with problems and no agreement will ever be sort out in Northern Ireland unless peace is called between the IRA, the British and the Irish. I think that the most important event in Northern Ireland’s history is the battle of the Boyne. I think this because it was the first major cause in the problems in Ireland and it seemed to kick off the problems that are now happening today. I think that if the Battle of the Boyne did not occur then most of the problems in Ireland would not have happened today. However the problems between the Protestants and the Catholics will always be in Ireland but I believe without the battle of the Boyne then most of the major problems in Northern Ireland would not have occurred.
