Section 1- The Brighton bomber

Patrick Magee attempted to kill the former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet in 1984. He did this during the Conservative party's annual conference. He planted a bomb at the Grand Hotel in Brighton which the Conservative party were staying at. The bomb left five people dead and another 34 injured, miraculously. the Prime Minister and the cabinet managed to escape. Magee had stayed at the hotel before the Conservative party conference and planted a bomb in the room that Margaret Thatcher was later going to be staying in. He had stayed in the hotel three weeks before the bombing under the false name of Roy Walsh. Sussex police traced and eliminated 800 people from 50 countries who had stayed at the hotel in the month before the attack. The only person that could not be traced was Roy Walsh. Magee's true identity was discovered after a palm print from a hotel registration card matched that of Magee. The detectives didn't want to issue a public alert and waited and hoped that Magee would come back to the British mainland. Luckily for them whilst they were tracing another IRA suspect, Peter Sherry, they were led to Magee in a Glasgow safe house in 1985. He had also planned attacks on 16 other hotels around the coast. At Magee's trial in 1986 the judge recommended that he serve a minimum of 35 years in prison. Magee was sentenced for planting and exploding the bomb, five counts of murder and conspiracy to bomb 16 other targets. Magee was released early under the Good Friday agreement. He only served 14 years and was released in 2000. He was the 277th prisoner to be released early under the agreement and there are 500 others due for release. The prisoners are being released early under the Good Friday agreement. The IRA is prepared to give up their weapons in return for all their prisoners being released. However the release of any individual who has committed murder is bound to cause controversy.

Magee committed the crime because he was part of the IRA. He joined the IRA because his father had been killed by loyalist policemen. He joined to get revenge for his fathers death and because his farther was also in the IRA. The IRA stands for a united Ireland. They are Republicans and want both North and South Ireland to join to form one independent country. The IRA(Irish Republican Army) are remembered for the Remembrance day bombing in 1987 which left 11 people dead and 63 injured, shown in source 16. They are also remembered for the Omagh bombing of 1998 which left 28 dead and around 220 injured, shown in source 19. Another act they are remembered for is the bombing of Canary Wharf which killed 3, shown in source 17. The IRA hated the Thatcher government because they had taken away the political status of the IRA prisoners. This meant they were treated like any other criminal and had to do everything that a normal criminal would have to do. Margaret Thatcher said "There is no such thing as political murder, political bombing or political violence. We will not compromise on this. There will be no political status." The prisoners went on strike because of this. They held hunger strikes in 1981 which led to the death of 10 inmates at the Maze prison. Some prisoners also refused to wear prison uniforms and went on strike sitting in their rooms with nothing but a blanket on so it was called the blanket protest. Another protest the prisoners held was the Dirty protest which involved the prisoners rubbing their excrement on the walls of their cells. The Brighton bomb was part of the IRA's long term strategy. They planned to plant 16 other bombs hoping this would lead to the British government allowing a united Ireland. Magee planed to kill Margaret Thatcher to try to get back the special status of IRA prisoners. He hoped by killing the Prime Minister the government would allow the special status. He chose the Grand Hotel because he knew that the Prime Minister and other key government ministers were going to be there.

It could be argued that any murderer should not be released early especially one that killed 5 people and injured 34. Patrick Magee's target was Margaret Thatcher who managed to escape unharmed. He was also plotting to blow up 16 other hotels around the coast of Britain. He is still a dangerous man because he is willing to kill people. He is also dangerous because he has knowledge about bombs and explosions. Another reason he is dangerous is that he planned to kill many more people but failed in his first attempt. The last reason he is dangerous ...
