designing an information system

Report 3 AO1b When designing an information system you first need to consider the output. The output depends on the type of job. If a very basic job is needed you would use a monitor and a printer. The basic input devices are the mouse and the keyboard. Basic output devices are the monitor, the speakers and the printer. I need to consider alternatives so that I can get the best out of my system. The purpose of an input device is to input data or information so it can be converted into the system. Input devices must be fast and accurate. The cost of the product must be reasonably cheap. The main input devices in use today are: Keyboard Web Camera Joy Stick MICR Mouse Scanner Digital Camera OCR/PMR Barcode Readers Microphone An optical wheel mouse is available to me and a QWERTY keyboard. Keyboard Keyboards are the oldest and most familiar type of input device. The way a keyboard works is that each button that is being pressed closes a switch. This releases a code which the computer converts to the relevant character. The keyboard is called a QWERTY keyboard due to the letters on the top right of it. There are two main faults that could be due to the keyboard. The Transposition Error Around 70% of errors are transposition errors. This occurs when two letters (or more commonly) numbers are switched with each other. For example, instead

I am required to carry out a remedial computer maintenance.

UNIT 401 Question 1 I am required to carry out a remedial maintenance on the following Computer consists of: * Gigabyte GA-60XT motherboard * P111 550 Running at 100MHz * 40GB hard disk * Floppy disk drive * CD combi-drive * Graphics card using ATI Range PRO chip set * Running Windows XP operating system * HP LaserJet 6L printer Gigabyte GA-60XT motherboard To carry out remedial maintenance on a motherboard I would need to make sure there is no dust on there I would do this by using a can that is full of compressed air so that it does not damage the motherboard. After carrying that out I would make sure that no components on the motherboard has moved out of place, whilst I was dusting also make sure that I am ESD protected so you do not cause any damage to any components. After I done that I would make sure that the motherboard is screwed in place so that is secured Properly. The steps to take make sure power is turned off 2 make sure take ESD precautions have been taken as this could reduce the life of your motherboard 3 undo the case of base unit 4 look at all components to make sure you know where they were when you finish dust the motherboard using compressed air in a can. Make sure you do not use vacuum as this can damage you motherboard as this give off ESD 5 after dusting your motherboard check everything is in correct possession 6 now check

I am going to create a macro that will allow Mr Gascoigne's company, (Shoes 'n all) to insert a different response into a template letter, so that the letter will contain the necessary information appropriate for the use.

Macro/ Toolbar I am going to create a macro that will allow Mr Gascoigne's company, (Shoes 'n all) to insert a different response into a template letter, so that the letter will contain the necessary information appropriate for the use. I am going to create 4 different Macros. They will input a short paragraph that will tell the reader about their credit bill to the company. The 4 Macro's will be: . To open the Master Letter 2. Telling the reader that their credit bill is up to date and that they hope that the customer will continue using the company to buy their shoes. 3. Telling the customer that their credit bill is slightly behind and that the require the credit bill as soon as possible 4. Telling the customer that they haven't paid their bill for quite a while and that their credit account has been closed. 5. A slogan that will appear in the footer. I first created a simple letter and put in '<' where information will be inserted. (See first of documents) On the same document but on a different page I created the responses that will eventually be the different macros. (See second of documents) I then saved the document as a '.dot' file, as this then becomes the master copy. Once they were created I had to start recording a macro. I went to, file-> new and opened a blank document. New was the time to start recording. I wanted to record a macro that would

Hollywood Express which is a large building off the main road in Ribbleton. The organisation is a large one and provides popcorn, chocolate, sweets, drinks, machinery and other stuff for UCI and Odeon cinemas around the country

A Description of the ICT Systems Used in Hollywood Exp and how they meet there needs. Introduction The person I interviewed was called Eric Tomlinson and his job title was operations manager he was in charge of the warehouse were deliveries are picked (collected) and production were the popcorn is made and packaged. I was shown around both of these areas of the building. Eric Tomlinson who I interviewed used the computer for most of the day but occasionally left his office to check how the staff were doing there job. The company he works for is called Hollywood Express which is a large building off the main road in Ribbleton. The organisation is a large one and provides popcorn, chocolate, sweets, drinks, machinery and other stuff for UCI and Odeon cinemas around the country. The company buys stock from other companies and then provides it for it's customers except for the popcorn as that is produced inside the company itself. The company has around 10 to 15 workers in the ware house, 10 people in production and various other workers in the company Inc managers etc. Input Devices Mouse The small mechanical device whose movement corresponds to pointer movements on a monitor. The mouse is the most commonly used input device the operator will use this more than anything else it allows he/she to click on dropdown menus, minimize programs and exit programs and many

A computer system consists of hardware and software.

A computer system consists of hardware and software. Hardware is the equipment, which makes up the computer system. Hardware consists of: - Input devices such as keyboard, mouse, joystick - The Central Processing Unit (CPU) - Output devices such as a printer, monitor, graph plotter - Backing storage devices such as disc drive, hard drive - Media such as discs, tapes, paper etc There is hardware that I used is: * Mouse * Keyboard * Printer * Monitor * A tracker ball mouse A tracker ball mouse is an input device and similar to a mouse but the ball is set into a cup on the top of the unit. A finger or, on larger tracker balls the palm of the hand, is used to roll the ball in any direction. The ball controls the movement of the pointer on the screen. Buttons on the tracker ball work in the same way as mouse butons to activate processes on the screen. My alternative of using a mouse with a tracker ball would be a mouse without a tracker ball. Benefit: * A tracker ball does not require a large flat surface. Drawbacks: * Most people find them a bit fiddly * Not accurate * Not quiet ALTERNATIVE: Mouse without a tracker ball The pointer on the monitor screen mirrors the movement of the mouse by the user's hand. Under the mouse is a ball, which rolls as the mouse is moved. This movement of he ball causes two shafts to rotate inside the mouse; one shaft records

How do the land use, housing and environmental quality in Tudor, Callowland, Nascot and Park wards of Watford affect the relative "desirability" of the wards?

How do the land use, housing and environmental quality in Tudor, Callowland, Nascot and Park wards of Watford affect the relative "desirability" of the wards? I will now discuss primary data regarding the four wards, and not to include any secondary data, including census data or researched data from the Internet. A colour coded map will provide an easy visual report of the distribution and separation of various housing types, as well a where forests and parks are laid out, and link that to the environmental quality of each of the four wards. I will discus each ward separately and then conclude it in a final paragraph at the end of this section. The concluding paragraph will contain graphs and charts to help enhance the comparisons. Of course when discussing the desirability of somewhere, you have to take into account who it is for. For example, a student would not live in a 5 bedroom detached house. PARK WARD This was the first ward visited and due to the fact that this was the first time I had visited these wards, this ward has left an indentation in my mind of my first impression of Watford. We commenced north up Hempstead road and took a left into Stratford way, where our fieldwork began. Small detached housing covered this area. The field sketch below shows you how close the house's boundaries are, as well as the style and age of the houses. When we were at the

I have been asked to kit out the new world club travel call centre with computers and software that will make the job easier and more efficient for the people in the call centre.

User Needs I have been asked to kit out the new world club travel call centre with computers and software that will make the job easier and more efficient for the people in the call centre. I was asked to do this by the managing director of world club travel. They want me to kit out the call centre because it has just been built and it has no equipment. The audience is going to be the manger director of world club travel as he is going to want to see the hardware and the software of the new call centre and he is going to want to know how much it is going to cost and he will most likely want to know what the call centre is being equipped with and what software is going to be used. There is also the people that are going to work in the new world club travel call centre. They are going to know about it because they will be using the hardware and the software as they are going to be working there. The hardware that is going to be used in the new call centre is a computer, keyboard, mouse, monitor and a printer. The computer will have Intel(r) Celeron(r) Processor 2.0GHz, 256MB DDR RAM, 15" Analogue Flat Panel Monitor, 30GB IDE Hard Drive, 56K Modem, 24 speed CD drive and a floppy drive. The computer will have a flat panel monitor because of these reason: service life (a flat panel is expected to have a 50% longer useful life than a CRT), power consumption, lower heat

Motivation- drive reduction theory

Coursework assignment 1(ssp111) Maslow hierarchy of needs-http://web.utk.edu/~gwynne/maslow.HTM Maslow, A. (1954). Motivation and Personality. New York: Harper & Row. Hertzberg, F. (1966). Work and the Nature of Man. Cleveland: World Publishing Co. Choose 1 of the major theories of psychology: Motivation- drive reduction theory Critically assess its application to a sport or health situation: David Beckhams move from Manchester united to real Madrid. Achieved all he wanted at old Trafford and wanted a new challenge in Spain. Drive reduction- an individual may be motivated to complete a task, which can be seen as a drive. When that drive is perceived as being fulfilled, then the drive is reduced. If the individual feels that he or she is performing to the best of their ability, the performance may well become habitual and the performer sees no reason to be motivated or driven to do better. Problems can occur if the performer thinks that there is no need to drive to improve, even though there may well be room for much improvement. Honeybourne (1996) Extrinsic Motivation External factors can be extremely powerful in determining weather we want to learn a particular skill and weather we want o perfect it. External factors often come in the form of rewards such as medals, money and prizes. The pressures from other people can also be extrinsic motivators; some young people

Hardware Report

Hardware Report For a computer to work there are two sections that enable us to use ICT the way we do, the hardware (title of this report) and the software (see my software report). Hardware is something that the individual can use and is the input and output devices controlled by the CPU (Central Processing Unit). Mouse, keyboard, scanners and joysticks are all examples of input devices - we tell the computer what to do with them. Printers, dot matrix and screens are all output devices - we get what we have been doing on the computer displayed to us or transferred onto a different type of media e.g. paper - this is the transition from a computerized system to paper based. A basic system looks like this: We can also look at the system like this: I am working on a Thintune Model WLV101; this is where I am based to do my work i.e. my workstation. This is then linked to an IBM server using Citrix Thin Client software that allows us as a school to send applications and the use of the internet to other locations on the campus. The individual workstation has 64Mb (megabytes) of RAM (Random Access Memory) and 133MHz (Megahertz) processor that is then connected to the terminal server via a CAT SA 100Mb cable with a core 1Mb between servers and switch. The data i save at my workstation is not stored locally, however, is sent to a mainframe server located away from the main
