Memory and Storage

Types of Storage Uses Advantages Disadvantages Floppy Disk Used for private data. Also used for keeping extra copies of data or for transporting data. * Private data can be stored. * They are small and therefore data can be taken away and easily used on another PC. * Can be used to make extra back-up copies. * Not very strong and can get easily damaged or lost. * Not all machines are able to read from the same disk. * The amount of storage space is often too small for some data files. CD-ROM Used for data and program that does not need to change. Data cannot be written onto these types of disk. They have data stored digitally, instead of magnetically. Used for encyclopaedias, games, other software. * Data cannot be erased from CD-ROMS. * CD-ROMs are small and portable. * CD-ROMs have a much larger storage capacity than floppy disks. * They can get easily lost. * You cannot save to a CD-ROM. * A CD-ROM has a small storage capacity than a hard disk. * It is faster to access items from a hard disk than a CD-ROM. DVD Used to store films which are a lot better in picture and sound quality. Can be used on DVD players to connect to TVs or available as a computer package. * They have a very large storage capacity. * Sound and picture quality is excellent. * There is an increasing availability of products in DVD-format. * There is still

How ICT requirements are met in an organisation.

Report B: How ICT requirements are met in an organisation Before Haden was introduced ICT, everything was done by hand. This took longer and was not a reliable method of processing information. Haden has many departments and altogether they have many computers. I am going to only analyse one of those departments because doing the whole building with the number of computers will be ridiculous. The department I will be analysing is the Fraud department. This department deals with all the people committing benefit fraud. They work with the police to get those people in court. The Fraud department found it hard to cope without computers. When the computers were introduced everything was easy. Everything needed ICT. In the Fraud department there are 45 computers. Here are the specifications of the hardware. Hardware - Input devices Keyboard- There is 40 standard QWERTY keyboards and 5 ergonomic keyboards. Ergonomic keyboards are QWERTY but the layout is different. The keyboards connect by PS/2 port. Mice- There is 45 standard mice. These come as default on all the computers. The mice connect also connect through PS/2 port. Digital Cameras- These cameras are devices that can take photos or moving images (films) and transfer them on to a PC. The images are JPEG, GIF, UGA, UFO or PSO. There are a total of 4 cameras in the department. The digital cameras connect to the via

Choosing Hardware. he computer system that is already installed will not meet the Theme Parks requirements because it is inadequate. The RAM (system memory) is about 4000 megabytes too small and would only last for a very short period of time

Assignment 3 - Task 1 (D2) T he computer system that is already installed will not meet the Theme Park's requirements because it is inadequate. The RAM (system memory) is about 4000 megabytes too small and would only last for a very short period of time, thus making it a rather expensive mistake. The hard drive is only 10 gigabytes, making it 990 gigabytes short of what you would need. The optical drive is out of date - it is the equivalent of video in today's world. The USB is out of date and with the new USB 3, which has been dubbed the super speed USB3, can transport files in seconds not minutes or hours. The CPU goes at a snail's pace. There is no graphics editing programme - it only has Windows media centre, which can only let you print photos out and pretty soon, they will stop making updates for Windows XP. The printer only prints out 18ppm when I would recommend having "Brother HL-5370DW Mono" because the first page can come out in 8.5 seconds, with a maximum of 30 ppm with a resolution of 1200 x 1200 which means you can print out visitors' photos quicker than the old system and prevents annoyed customers having to wait for their souvenir photos, thus increasing business. I would suggest upgrading to "HP Touchsmart 600". With a touchscreen, there is no need to have a mouse. It is 10 times quicker, for the particular requirements the Theme Park will need -

company I am investigation is McDonald's: the founder of McDonald's is Raymond Albert Kroc

The company I am investigation is McDonald's: the founder of McDonald's is Raymond Albert Kroc. The organisation that I have chosen is McDonald's because it is the number one world's most familiar fast food restaurant; it has stores all over the world. Their headquarters is in Chicago it approximately has 2,800 workers to provide a wide Varity of support function to 30,000 McDonald's restaurants in 119 countries around the globe through a network of divisional, regional and local-country offices. They serve 46 million customers each day McDonalds is one of the worlds most known companies and holds leading shares in the globe. Some of their fairer foods are French fries, big Mac, quarter pounder, and chicken, mcnuggets and egg muffin. The McDonald's History Raymond Albert Kroc 1902-1984, a Salesman Ray Kroc mortgaged his home and invested his entire life savings to become the exclusive distributor of a five-spindled milk shake maker called the Multimixer. Hearing about the McDonald's hamburger stand in California running eight Multimixers at a time, he packed up his car and headed west. It was 1954 and He was 52 years old. Where it all began, Des Plaines, Illinois Ray Kroc opened the Des Plaines restaurant in 1955. First day's revenues-$366.12! No longer is a functioning restaurant, the Des Plaines building now a museum containing McDonald's memorabilia and

Hardware : Input devices

Input Devices Two input devices I have used in my project are: Keyboard The keyboard is the most widely used input device and is used to enter data or command to the computer. It has a set of alphabet keys, a set of digit keys, and various function keys. The layout of the letters on a keyboard is standard across many countries although slight variations are necessary where languages use additional letters in their alphabets. The keyboard illustrated below is called a QWERTY keyboard. The name comes from first six keys on the top row of the alphabetic characters. I used the keyboard in my project to input data into the Talini(tm) when creating a homepage for my website. I also used it to input data in mail-merge, spreadsheets and databases. It is fairly easy to use and flexible. It provided me an ease in typing in, and it was rather more convenient than writing on a line paper as I was capable of erasing wrongly keyed in or misspelled words. The keyboards now days come with a numeric pad or hot/function keys which make tasks even easier. I had been told that QWERTY keyboards are based on the way typewriters were designed (I do not know whether it's a fact). The advantages of using a keyboard are you can enter text easily and some keyboards are designed with a curved key layout to make typing faster and more comfortable. The keyboard was a vital part of my

From what I have gathered, the AquaTeale Supermarket has 15 types of output. All these different, and important kinds of output can be generated on the word processing package, Microsoft Word. They are: . Letters to Clients: these are letters to the clients of the company stating different sorts of things, like the number of items going to be delivered, etc. These are very important documents both for the company and their clients, and they have to be sent on time and should look very business - like so as to convince the client that the AquaTeale Supermarket is the right company to choose for their requirements. 2. Letters to Suppliers: These are the letters to the manufacturers and suppliers, and are also important to both the company as well as the supplier. 3. Invoices: A document that is used for invoicing/ recording sales of items, stating the date, number of items sold, rate at which the item/s is/ are sold, and the person/ company to whom it was sold. These are essential to keep stock of items sold, and also, to enable easy audit of accounts. 4. Brochures: These are important forms of output used for advertising so as to show the different companies around that there is such a trading company in the state, and also to persuade more companies, especially supermarkets and retail outlets to purchase items from the AquaTeale Supermarket. 5. Letterheads: These

How ICT Effects A Person With Special Needs.

How ICT Effects A Person With Special Needs In this piece of coursework I will be examining how ICT has helped a person with special needs. The person I will be looking at is Paddy McGinty, who suffers from Juvenile Macular Degeneration. This causes the light sensing cells in the back of the central region of the retina to malfunction and will eventually die, which leads to gradual loss of central vision. This basically means that Paddy can no longer see something in full if he looks at it directly, and only if he looks at it from the side. He is also colour blind when looking directly at something, but can see it in colour if he looks at it from the side. This means that he has to be very organised when dealing with clothes so not to put on the wrong colour item. Paddy found out he was colour-blind at 16, when he took an eye test when applying for a job as an electrician. They found out that he couldn't distinguish between colours and he failed the test and couldn't become an electrician and so he became an engineer. Although colour blind, he got his driving licence when he was 22. In 1988 he was registered as Partially Sighted and 2 years later he was registered blind. Being blind, in government terms, means that he is 80% disabled, so this means that he couldn't do many things that he did before, such as drive and do the work that he did before. He became less able to do

"VHS is dead, long live DVD".

"VHS is dead, long live DVD" This statement can be looked at in two ways, either true or false. People that would say that this statement is false would mostly be for nostalgic reasons. I myself feel that this is true because technology is evolving minute by minute, and the future is key to technology. Although I think that it's good to have new technology, it also means that more and more people will be taken advantage of. This will not just be the consumer, as prices are very high, but the poor exploited Asian communities that will be paid less than a dollar a day. Apart from this I do think that the digital versatile disc is the way forward for our viewing needs. The acronym DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc. Each word is key in showing how "VHS is dead" and that the DVD is the future. The 'Disk' is the future because unlike a video, it is not at all bulky and is only 120mm wide, where as a video is 187.5mm. This obviously means that the way we view films, music etc is getting smaller and also means that it will continue to decrease in size. Even though a video is larger than a disc it does not mean that it holds more memory, in fact a disc holds seven times more memory than a video, which is the main reason the DVD has taken on. The word 'Digital' has great benefit over the VHS because videos are predominantly analogue and all DVDs are digital. This is a great

I.T Coursework

I.T Coursework File naming convections (Filename=JMWDfilename) My filename convection is my initials and the initials of the document I have been working in E.G word WD. So if I wanted to save a file on the internet and I produced it in word it would save it as JMWDinternet. This is how I would save all of my documents in the school year, the reason for this is because you can then find all of your documents and other saved items, very quickly and simply. Backups (Filename=JMWDfilename) Backups: A backup is a is a file that has been saved in more than one place, it's a good idea to do this in case of a robbery, fire or any other ways you can lose your data. If you wanted to backup your files than you could save them on your hard drive, a portable medium like a USB stick, and then have them saved in at a different location. SAFETY ISSUES Definition: Safety is the condition of being protected against failure, breakage, error, accidents, or harm. Protection involves here both causing and exposure. (QUOTED FROM: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety ) Safety with computers is important both with the Hardware and Software. Software When you think about software safety on your computer it is different from hardware, when thinking about software safety we think about the main thing in hackers. Hackers can be stopped by simple methods for example you may purchase firewalls which
