ICT Short course write up

Introduction:

This project is about providing a solution to how to advertise a new cinema opening in the city centre.

Project aims:

  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Displays information required in orderly clear fashion
  • Data is tabulated for ease of use
  • The following information is all included in the website
  • Contact info, cinema times, what’s playing, reviews, prices, new releases
  • Facilitate customers access to such data
  • Produce a system which would be easily updated to allow for changing cinema schedules (weekly)

Choosing and Describing Applications

Choosing and Describing Applications:

There are different ways to advertise cinemas.

I have considered:

  • Using Posters to advertise the new cinema placed around the city centre
  • Posters could be made using Desktop Publishing (DTP) software such as Publisher, Photoshop
  • Benefits of using posters: most users are familiar with most features of DTP software and there are many features that allow the posters to be made very attractive (such as crop, rotate, resize, placing objects in the background, creating attractive headings….)
  • Drawbacks of posters: only a limited number of people will see them. No immediate changes in data, out of date posters will remain up (on walls) and they are expensive to keep on replacing weekly
  • Advertise the cinema in the local paper
  • Benefits (attract wide audience, no technical skills needed, the newspaper will produce the advert)
  • Drawbacks (advert will be surrounded by other adverts, not unique, no control on how it is presented, can only realistically be done in black and white, only a small part of the paper will be dedicated to the cinema, min info given, it will cost to put an ad in the paper).
  • Creating a web page to promote the cinema using specialist Web design software such as FrontPage
  • Benefits (Accessible to all with computer access, cyber cafes in the cite where people can quickly look up the information, information can be regularly updated so the website is always showing accurate information, very attractive way of presenting information making use of colours and images, FrontPage features)
  • Trailers and video clips can be available to download

Using Hardware

Hardware that I chose to use to help me create the website were a standard desktop computer with a keyboard, a mouse, a floppy disk drive, a monitor, a modem, and a printer.

The reasons we will need all of the above hardware are as follows:

  • Standard desktop computer with processor memory, hard disk drive, CD Rom to allow me to use the computer’s resources, install software programs and run them.
  • Keyboard needed for entering text and data
  • Mouse needed to drop and drag pictures and accessing items in menus and toolbars
  • Monitor needed to view the output and check that the results are as desired
  • Modem needed to access the Internet in order to upload the website onto the Internet.
  • Printer needed to allow me to have hard copies of the website as it is being produced in order to show them to others and get feedback
  • Floppy disk drive to backup work so nothing gets lost
