An Introduction To Modern Storage Devices

An Introduction To Modern Storage Devices There are many ways of storing information and data for use with modern computer systems and new developments are constantly being made. Many changes have occurred since the first personal computers were developed, allowing a lot more information to be stored, and on storage devices which are generally a lot smaller and easier to handle than methods of storage previously used. In the past two or three years, there has been a massive change in the emphasis that has been placed on certain storage devices. Whereas 3.5" floppy discs were practically the only commercially available storage medium available to the public there are now many more on offer. The biggest change has perhaps been that writeable and rewriteable CD's are now widely available to the public. For many people, CD-R's have now replaced the use of floppy discs, as they offer an inexpensive way of storing large amounts of data. A typical floppy disc stores 1.44 Mb's of data, whereas a CD-R stores 650 Mb and both offer a similarly priced product. Some examples of modern storage mediums are: * Mini Disc * Tape Drive * MP3 Card * Hard Disk Drives * CD ROM * Zip Disk * DVD The major advances in the ability to store larger amounts of data is not only desireable, but essential as computers become more complex each day. As computing technology develops, much more

How useful are databases for businesses today?

How useful are Databases for Businesses to day? I am going to plan an investigation into how useful databases are for a company in the 21st century. Firstly I am going to explain what a database is. A database is a collection of data that can be used as information. It is understandable as information because of the headings and structure used in the database file. -A FILE is the information given in a subject e.g. Patients records. -A RECORD is a set of information about one given thing e.g. one patients record would contain just information about that person. -A FILE is one piece of information in a record; it also gives meaning to a list of, otherwise meaningless, information e.g. the field heading 'First name' gives meaning to a list of words such as 'Emma', 'Joe', 'Frank' and 'Tom'. -A QUERY is a search of the database for a certain piece of information that could be useful to you, e.g. if you want to sell a platinum credit card then you could do a search for people living in a certain area and then send the information to those people using a mail merge. Alternatively, if you worked in a doctors surgery you could do a search of people who needed a booster jab. -A MAIL MERGE is a letter containing the results of the query sent to certain people who would possibly be interested in that certain information. The type of information that a business might want to

Data flow diagram

Data flow diagram A customer orders some videos from Eddies store. All customers are given 30 days credit. The customer is looked up on the customer file, and if they are a new customer, then their details will be stored there so then they can return to buy more videos. He can have contact numbers and address or addresses to claim his videos back if they are overdue, so he knows who has his videos. The order is entered in the sales order processing system. The price of the video and length of rental will be looked up from the stock file. An invoice is printed and given to the customer along with the video just so they know how long they have it for and what the price is. This is just a bit of evidence so they don't get overcharged or undercharged. Details of the sales are stored in the sales file so he can see what is happening with the sales of each and every one of his various types of videos. At the end of each month the accounts department prints statements to send to all member and customers. A report of overdue videos is kept in the accounts department and one copy is also sent to the customer obtaining the video. Below is a table with all of the processes, inputs and outputs that I have based my data flow diagram on. Project Input Process Output Video shop system Details of video members, details of video and loan returns Query to find overdue

OCR GCSE Business & Communication Task 7 Report

Task 7 Reports Task 1a: Logo Software: The software I used was Adobe Fireworks CS3. I used Fireworks because it offered a wide range of tools and textures. For my logo to stand out and be able to have anything it required I had to use this programme. I also have a lot of background use and knowledge of this programme, which meant I could use it more efficiently and effectively. Other programmes such as Photoshop or Microsoft Word do not offer such tools and would degrade my logo altogether. I could have used a variety of programmes such as Photoshop or Freehand, these are both programmes, which could have fulfilled my requirement, but lack in certain tools and effects. These programme lack in quality tools and would overall reduce the professionalism of my work. Photoshop offers tools for changing and editing pictures, this is not suitable as my logo had to be original and have new ideas published into it. Freehand does not suit the needs of my task as it is based upon opposite targets of my logo. My logo had to be original and incorporate a lot of professional and advert sable ideas and I think using these programmes, I would not be able to achieve these targets. I am confident I used the right programme, as 'Adobe Fireworks' is very effective in creating new ideas and adding personal preferences towards it. It also has a wide range of colour effects and variety

Report 3A: Impact of the ICT on the way you do things at home and at school/ college.

Report 3A: Impact of the ICT on the way you do things at home and at school/ college. Introduction For my report I will investigate and describe the impact of ICT on the way I do things at home and at school. This will also include how it affects me personally and socially. There are many ICT technologies which help me both in school and at home but I will be investigating five which are email, SMS, World Wide Web, WAP and PC technology. How do the ICT technologies I have mentioned above meet my needs? Internet- email Email and electronic mail enables me to send and receive messages including pictures, reports and videos almost anything that can be converted and sent by a telephone signa. Originally you needed a computer to send and receive messages although now it is possible to access email through the television and mobile phones. The advantages of email: * It is an easy access and straight forward to use * You can send emails to anyone in the world * You can also email people through the television and mobile phone by using more advanced technology. * You can send and receive messages really quickly so you don't have to wait a long time. * You can also send videos and pictures to friends and family who live a very far distance away from you and cannot contact you often through the telephone. The disadvantages of email: * Viruses may get sent to you through

Information technology - Shop systems.

Specification Background to the topic: I visited my local video and music store and after an interview with the manager I suggested there might be a better and more efficient way to manage their records. The better way would be to be to use a computerized system through the use of excel. My main task would be to create a new system which would be much better than their current system at organising records and storing records. The main reason for me choosing a video, and music shop was that these days people would rather spend a certain amount of money on buying a certain video so that they can watch it at their will instead of having to pay a certain amount of money on going to see the film in the cinema and paying a certain amount of money whenever they wanted to see it. The business is currently located on Wembley High Road. It currently employs 30 members of staff but Statement of Problem: The old system was a very basic and simple system where the person on the counter would write in a book the name, format and amount of the video and then he would write the member name and member number of the person renting the video. The customer would then sign the book. However on more than one occasion the book got lost and the store lost thousands of pounds in lost videos and faced a very big battle with the IRS over tax and audits. The video store had no way of making a

Comparing PC World and Euro PC: Computer Software & Hardware sales.

IM100 : E-commerce The commercial area I have chosen is Computer Software & Hardware sales. The two internet companies I have chosen to describe are PC World and Euro PC. PC World as a company does not solely sell their products on the internet they also have over 800 stores nationwide but their E-commerce sales count for a lot of their annual turnover. PC World is a well-established company in the UK and is currently the biggest computer sales company in the country. How they advertise PC World believe strongly in advertising choosing to advertise their products on the Television, Radio, Internet and in magazines/Tabloid papers. Due to the vast amount of money spent on advertising you would find it very hard to find anyone who deals with computers that hasn't heard of PC World. Their advertisements usually just concentrate on showing the special deals they currently have on the various computer products they sell. They also put the point across in their adverts that the company regards customer care very highly. The PC World home web page advertises in the same way by showing a small range of their popular and special offer products. Choosing the right product They help you to choose the right product by making it easy for you to get to the right area on the web site, this is done by listing the departments on the right hand side of there home page. There is also a

Explore the advantages and disadvantages of designing a poster for the Big M cinema and explore what hardware and software that is used to create the poster.

Coursework I have decided to explore the advantages and disadvantages of designing a poster for the Big M cinema and explore what hardware and software that is used to create the poster. The hardware that is needed for producing a poster is: * A monitor, which is used to display all the work that has been processed into the computer. * A keyboard, which is used to type in the information to create and edit the poster. * A mouse, which is used to change objects and their positions. * A printer, which is used to print out the final poster so that, can be displayed. * A scanner, which you can use to scan pictures and photographs i.e. the cinema. * A digital camera, which can be used to take pictures to be added to the poster. * The tower, which is where the information is gathered and memorised and is the power and operator of the whole computer. The software that is needed for designing a poster is: * Microsoft publisher, so that you can have an outline and document with the best features such as: clip art and word art. * Scanner software, so that you are able to scan the picture to include it onto the poster. * Internet Explorer, so that you can find images, such as borders on websites such as www.bellsnwhistles.com, to make the poster look more attractive. The advantages of creating a poster for the Big M cinema are: * It publicises the cinema to make people
