Analytical essay on Middlemarch

Analytical essay on Middlemarch During this chapter the main character is Dorothea, who to me, comes across as very intriguing. Dorothea visits Lydgate's home to ask if Casaubon consulted him because of new health problems. Lydgate is not home, but she discovers that Will is there visiting with Rosamond. Will offers to go to the New Hospital to fetch Lydgate, but Dorothea chooses to go to the hospital herself. She does not want to speak with Will, because she knows she could not tell Casaubon about it without upsetting him. She also doesn't want to hide things from her husband. She wonders why Will visits Rosamond in Lydgate's absence. Dorothea's abrupt departure mortifies Will, and he suspects he has fallen in her opinion. Rosamond teases Will by saying he worships Dorothea. Rosamond wonders at the possibilities of having male admirers even as a married woman. The way in which the chapter does this is by the way it show s how Dorothea decides to seek out Lydgate, and ask him if there has been a serious change in her husband's condition, or else why he has been so troubled since Lydgate's visit. She goes to his house, and finds Rosamond there, but Will is also there, which makes Dorothea panic, and she immediately leaves to find Lydgate at his hospital. Will fears that Dorothea will think badly of him because she has found him in the company of another woman, and not

The Worst Weekend.

The Worst Weekend (In the lounge) My brother came around last weekend, he said he was just popping in for a cup of tea, but I said he could stay, so he ended up staying the whole weekend. He wasn't acting normal, he seemed anxious and nervous. I asked him if anything was bothering him, he didn't reply. I asked my wife Margaret if she thought there was something different about him, she agreed that there was definitely something strange about him. I had to find out what was wrong with him. (Sunday morning) The PIGS were sniffing around the area. I was about to ask him what was wrong. When we had a knock on the door, it was the PIGS. There was an old and quite bossy PIG and there was a young PIG. The young one went upstairs to take a look around and the old one stayed downstairs asking me loads of questions. He asked me, have you seen your brother lately? By that time I knew there was something really wrong. I tried to ask my brother about it, but I couldn't because a couple of hours before the PIGS turned up, he went out and I haven't seen him since. On the Tuesday, two days after he'd left, the PIGS came back and they had a warrant to search the premises. There wasn't much point, because they didn't find anything in the house. But there was something in the garden, it must have been important because as soon as they found it they were off trying to track him

Flame Tests

Flame Tests Summary: In this lab, our purpose was to determine the identity of an unknown solution. We tested each of 9 solutions and a solid. We identified the color by recording the spectroscope reading, through cobalt glass, and by observations by the naked eye. Our procedure included using a wire to get a sample of the substance and perform the flame test. To ensure proper colors, we cleaned each one by dipping them in HCl and then burning them. By comparing the flame color of the unknown substance to the flame color of the other substances, we were able to determine the identity of the solution. Data: Table1 Analysis and Interpretation: 2. There were many differences in our trials. While the majority of the metals burned a yellowish color, there was some variation. For example; LiCl, NaCl, Na2SO4,BaCl2, the NaCl crystals, and the combination of Na2SO4 plus K2SO4 all appeared to the naked eye to be about the same color. In table 1, all values that are proceeded by a <?> did not have a clear spectroscope reading, or the flames for each didn't last long enough to get an accurate reading. The accurate spectroscope readings showed strontium chloride to have a spectrum reading from 490-640 on the second trial. The unknown substance had a reading of 440. The combination of sodium sulfate and potassium sulfate gave a reading of 450. From the naked eye

On the run Sam and Paul could hear someone coming, it sounded like a wooing sound. They didn't know if it was the police or just a car, so they ran away really quietly so no-one could hear them. Sam was thanking Paul for saving his life, but at the same time he was scared because he didn't know what was going to happen to them. They both were very frightened and didn't know where to go and what to do. They thought they had to run away because they knew they would get arrested. They knew their families would kill them so they felt compelled to go on the run. Sam was looking at Paul's beating heart pumping out of his chest and saw that he was sweating furiously and looked like he was going to faint. Also Sam could see Paul's shiny sweaty blonde hair shimmering in the sun so he knew he needed some shade. They saw a cart with hay in it with a rotten cover over it; they both crawled under it and cooled off. Then they both fell asleep because they were so exhausted. When they woke up they realised that they had travelled to a different part of the country which they were pleased about because they thought they would be safe there. There was only one problem; they had no money and no food. They were feeling very hungry and both of their bellies were rumbling. They started walking to try and find the nearest shops or supermarket. On the way they saw a sign saying "supermarket,

Hidden Identities.

Hidden Identities "Sarah...SARAH!!" Jess yelled as she was desperately running to try to catch up with Sarah. Sarah whipped her head around and replied "Yes, I'm waiting for you, stop yelling at me already!" The girls walked briskly through the rain to seek shelter with the other girls who had been on time for their meeting. "Sarah, why are you so late? You do realise that I said the meeting was going to be at mid-day and not midnight, didn't you?" Hannah asked furiously. Sarah simply shrugged her shoulders and went and sat down beside Celina, who gasped in shock that Sarah had 'chose' to sit next to her. "As I was saying," continued Hannah, "we need to set up a fire in order to produce smoke so that people overhead will notice us, if anyone goes past. We also need to get together a team of 'fire-watcher' who will take turns watching the fire to keep it going. I think that Sarah and her friends..." Sarah interrupted and blurted out, "what about FOOD! We need food you know. We don't have food reserves like animals!" Everyone's heads shot round and glared at Sarah in hunger and eagerness to eat. Nikki could see, from sitting beside a rather plump girl, whose stomach started rumbling that everyone, including herself was hungry, but she had other priorities rather that food. The plump girl, Michelle starting groaning in her hunger, and whispered, "do you think I could go and

Show How Colin's Character Develops Through the Novel - Two Weeks With The Queen is a children's novel by Morris Gleitzman.

Show How Colin's Character Develops Through the Novel 23/5/01 "Two Weeks With The Queen" is a children's novel by Morris Gleitzman. It is about a young boy named Colin who has a brother called Luke who has cancer. He goes to England to find the best doctor in the world and his attitude changes and becomes more mature. The reader can see that Colin's attitude changes from the beginning to the end. At the start of the book Colin's character is very immature as he is jealous as Luke seems to get everything he wants. No-one seems to be paying any attention to Colin and he is feeling mad. "Colin scowled". It is clear that Colin is feeling moody and grumpy and behaving as if Luke gets everything he wants. They show this by clearly saying the word scowled which is a good describing word showing what Colin is feeling in that moment in time. Luke collapses and goes to hospital and Colin is still in a mood. Colin doesn't realise that it could be serious and is still angry with Luke. Colin started to settle down and realises that he cares for Luke. This is shown by "how dare they." Colin showing that he cares for his brother and doesn't want him to die. Colin is told that they can't cure Luke's cancer so he is sad but at the same time jealous that Luke is getting all the attention. He has mixed emotions. "Luke's going to die." Colin is coming to terms that Luke may die but he does

The Mysterious Train.

Birun Patel English GCSE Coursework Creative Writing- The Mysterious Train I used to rely on trains very often on my way to work, so I was familiar with every sound down to the last detail. As soon as I reached the platform I could gain a sniff of the damp electrical smell which always wafted straight up my nose from the rails which where 20 to 30 years old with thousands of cigarette butts underneath. I could sense that my train was approaching just by the tone of the chitterling sound that would disperse from the rails and the rail light changing from amber to green rapidly. I would even know the exact place to stand in order to be right in front of the doors when the train came to standstill. It became a routine. Two stops and I was at Baker Street, it all seemed too quick . I would barely get a chance to read the first paragraph of my Daily Mail. Nevertheless, at work I would just take an extra long lunch break and take a seat in the park whilst eating my cheese and Branston Pickle sandwich. My shift was usually 9am to 6:30pm, but it would vary depending on how much clients I had to attend. Luckily, today I only had four clients, so I finished at what I call a breathtaking 3:00pm. I rushed to the train station to get the twenty past three train. I ran and ran I managed to get there for quarter past three , by now I was exhausted and out of breath as I

The Importance of Patterns in Taekwondo.

The Importance of Patterns in Taekwondo By Philip Hines A pattern is defined as "a set of attack and defence movements against one or more imaginary opponents". In taekwondo however, patterns much more than just a series of movements. Often seen as the more traditional side of taekwondo, all syllabus patterns are linked to important events or people in Korea's history. Not only may the number of moves in the pattern or the pattern's diagram be significant, I think that the pattern's interpretation is as important as the pattern itself. Knowledge of the interpretation of the pattern helps to give students an understanding of the pattern and an insight to the correct frame of mind to perform the pattern in, meaning that the correct mental attitude towards the pattern is vital. The need to learn the interpretations also helps to discipline the mind of the student and portray the student's attitude towards taekwondo. I think that without the pattern interpretations and historical links, patterns would be without meaning and therefore lacking the passion and determination needed to perform the pattern properly. Patterns also serve to test the ability of a student at taekwondo without actually fighting anybody. Regular practise of patterns helps with the development of strong techniques, co-ordination, balance and stamina but more importantly it helps create a disciplined and

The investigation of coin combinations

The investigation of coin combinations In this investigation we had to try and find out all the different ways of paying for phone calls with different value coins. We started off with 10p and 20p's and worked out all the combinations using them to make a pound. I did all the values up to a pound aswell so I could work out a formula. Combination for 10p: 10p For 20p:10+10, 20 For 30p: 10+10+10, 20+10, 10+20 For 40p: 10+10+10+10+10, 20+10+10, 10+20+10, 10+10+20, 20+20 And so on. I got this table of results. As you can see there is no pattern that is because these results follow the Fabernacci sequence where the previous 2 values e.g 5+8 added together equal the next value, 13. With this in mind you can predict that the next value will be 55+89=144 To see if other values of coins did this I tried it with 10p and 30p's. This doesn't follow the Fibernacci sequence in the early values only in the later ones like70, 80 and 90p I used other values of coins and came up with this graph. This is the graph I came up with as you can see It doesn't follow a set pattern, only the 10p 20p combinations follow the Fibernacci sequence the rest seem to be irregular. I did not manage to find an nth term for any of the coin combinations but you can use the graph to find out values. That proves that there is a linear equation the equals the corresponding line on the graph but I have
