Media Studies Brief for my Independent Project I will be producing a date rape awareness advert for my independent project. The genre is informative and alerting as it is a date rape awareness advert. In any genre there are codes and conventions, which familiarise the audience with the type of text they are being invited to consume. Repetition of these codes and conventions is a key element in the way an audience understands and relates to the text. For example the iconography, which an audience may associate with this particular genre and topic, is a club scene, alcohol, teenagers etc. This advert has to be believable and realistic to emphasize to the danger to the audience that it is something that could happen to them. It also has to make a powerful impact on the audience so they are aware of the consequences the drug can take, and do feel slightly threatened and at risk, so consequently the advert has informed and alerted them to the dangers of date rape. Finally it must be enigmatic and gripping so the audience feel compelled to watch the whole advert as the main message will be at the end. The characters in the advertisement are essential, as they have to assimilate with the whole advert, and the viewer must be able to relate, sympathise and learn from the characters actions. Analysing an advert This advert is trying to sell its product, shower gel, to a youngish female audience. The advert comes from a young girls magazine, called "Sugar", which is aimed at teenagers. The background of the advert is white and the images on the advert are either dark or bright so they stand out on the page. There are 2 photographs of the product but they're different scents. The advert is A4 size and the images of the shower gel take up most of the page. This is to make them stand out and grab the reader's attention. They also stand out because the bottle's are dark green and bright green which contrast against the white background. The diagrams of the shower gel bottles are the most prominent features of the advert. This suggests that they are trying to grab the reader's attention by the bright contrasting colours. The image of the shower gel immediately suggested the product because of its size. It contains two large bottles of shower gel and some small natural fruits & plants (mint and lime). The pictures are clear and bright and take up most of the page because they're the focal point of the advert. The colours used also help to make it stand out. The image has been photographed with the second bottle, nearest to the right, a little out of focus, to give a further away look, but it is still clear. Analysis of an Advertisement Pooja Vora With the emergence of the world into post modernity, man has accomplished specializing and refining his most frequently used weapon, manipulation, into a subtle, sophisticated and appealing trap that preys on the untrained mind. The combination of efficient manipulation, auto suggestive and argumentative skills, which include the use of fallacies, make advertising the most glamorous style of dominating and dictating the human mind. One example of this artful mind controller is the Brabantia company ad for a food storage canister. The Barbantia solid company promotes a canister through logos and ethos which can be exposed during an analysis of the actions and expressions and photography; an awareness of the composition of this advertisement can expose complex question, non sequitur, begging the question, false analogy and post hoc to the audience. The Brabantia canister uses argumentative strategies of logos and ethos to promote their product and company. The product is shown as being used; the alien hand reaches for the canister which is filled with food. The need for nutritional sustenance is a logical, reasonable characteristic of a living organism. Media Assignment: Magazine advertisements " In what ways do the two adverts you have studied attempt to sell their products to different audiences?" We consider a public notice or announcement especially one advertising goods or services in newspapers, on posters, in broadcasts, Internet and other types of media an advertisement. All major and many small companies use adverts as well, the advertising industry keeps on growing every year, and involves a great amount of capital. Most companies rely on adverts, and in todays society there is a huge competition between advertising companies to win the attention of the richest and most popular. It is really the question which company can come up with the best, most influencing and persuasive ideas. The two adverts I have studied target the two genders, they are not unisex. One of them advertises the "Quiksilver" sports company; they make sportswear for both men and women, however this advert is directly aimed at men. This advert uses a strong and famous figure, Thierry Kunz to advertise the clothes, as him being a "Swiss pro snowboarder" will presumably impress the target audience. Obviously the targeted audience must have certain background knowledge or interest in this sport, or at least in the style of clothes the company produces. INTRODUCTION What is packaging? Who needs it? Why do we need it? In the world we live in today, packaging is very important. The fact that everywhere you look, something is protected by some sort of packaging just shows us how much it is a part of our lives. Packaging is used to protect a variety of different products, ranging from chocolate wrappers to boxes of hi-fi systems. You can find a wide range of shapes and sizes, all designed for different purposes. Take for example, the type of packaging that protects our daily fresh food from germs and bacteria; special adhesives, cartons, containers and plastic bags, all in some way protect the food and are regarded as a form of packaging. There is one imperative issue related to this topic as to why we need it, and that is the fact that it contains the information, which tells us about the product, its ingredients and any instructions we might need. This is critical for some people as they may have an allergy to a particular ingredient and must know whether the product contains it or not. So who needs packaging? Well, the answer is EVERYONE!
