Media Assignment Persuasive Writing: Charity Appeal Letters John Corcoran 11B Oxfam have created a highly persuasive letter using emotive and intensely personal language. It is very carefully and cleverly constructed and a logical argument is developed throughout. The first thing the writer does is earn the reader's trust. From the very start the letter opens an intensely direct and personal contact; four "I's" and six "you's" are used in the opening paragraph alone. The idea of personal contact is expanded upon as the writer speaks in a very polite, apologetic tone, "I hope you can forgive the intrusion." This method of communication earns the reader's trust. This trust then leads to support. Oxfam are looking for financial support from the reader. The reader needs to be convinced there is a strong reason to commit to Oxfam if they are to hand over part of their income. This is why a large part of the letter is dedicated to doing this. The various projects Oxfam helps to fund are laid out with basic detail given. Much of the article contains disturbing information which the reader may not be aware of. Much of this may shock the reader, shifting him or her into a snap decision to help Oxfam simply through surprise. Does Cosmetic Surgery teach a wrong message about self image? Too many children today are growing up surrounded by media portrayals of the perfect body. If we don't show realistic images through the media the next generations will be full of self-doubt. In turn this will lead to greater problems of insecurity, anxiety and depression. So why do people harbour a need to achieve the perfect body? People are losing the right to enjoy life as they are due to ridiculous expectations forced upon us as 'the norm' via the media. An eating disorders website claims that we try to succumb to: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: "The media plays a big part. Surrounded by thin models and TV stars, teenage girls are taught to achieve an impossible goal. As a result, many teenage girls intensely dislike their bodies and can tell you down to the minutest detail what's wrong with it. Most teens watch an average of 22 hours of TV a week and are deluged with images of fat-free bodies in the pages of health, fashion and teen magazines. The "standard" is impossible to achieve. A female should look like, and have the same dimensions as Barbie, and a male should look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was to describe radio series. The opera came from the fact that they were about dilemmas and real life situations that people have on a daily basis. As the radio series popularity grew, they became televised in the 1950s. Soon it was spread around the world and it grew and grew so more people of different ethnic backgrounds had to be introduced to the soaps. Coronation Street is the longest running TV soap in the world. After the successes of Dallas (among others) in America, soap started to suddenly became more popular in the '80s. The Mclibel trial was a court case between McDonald's restaurant limited (plaintiffs) Vs Dave Morris (gardener) and Helen Steel (postman) (defendants) from green peace London. The case ran for two and a half years and became the longest civil case in British history. The fast food giant McDonald's was suing the campaigners Dave Morris and Helen Steel for libel over a six-page fact sheet entitled "What's Wrong With McDonald's?" Since there is no legal aid in libel cases, Morris and Steel had to represent themselves against top team of libel lawyers employed by McDonald's. The trial began in June 1994 and a verdict was given in June 1997. The judge (Justice Bell) ruled that McDonald's "exploits children" with there advertising, are "culpably responsible" for cruelty to animals and so on. But Morris and Steel failed to prove all points they had made so the judge ruled that they had libeled McDonald's and therefore should pay £60,000 damages. Media Coursework: A comparison of The Times and The Sun By C.Keaveny I have taken The Sun and The Time from Monday 12th February 2001, and I am going to analyse and compare the two papers by looking at their respective front page in detail and briefly looking at how the two papers treat the same story differently. I will be looking at the way each paper is presented, what their aim is and how they try to achieve this, as well as what angle the papers chose to report from. Firstly, I am going to look at the front page of The Times. The Times is a "broadsheet" newspaper, which means that it will probably conform to certain criteria. These are the target audience, the way the paper is presented, what stories they cover and how they are covered and the language they use. The Times is aimed mainly at upper-middle/upper class readers and this is reflected in almost every aspect of the paper. The paper is usually sold folded in half due to its size, and therefore they usually include a large colour photograph in the top half, and use a coloured border to attract readers.
