Developents in Commercial Aircraft

Developments in the Commercial Aircraft Industry Even though Britain's Comet 1, the first jet powered commercial aircraft to cut usual turbo-prop journey times by 60%, it wasn't the airplane that paved the way forward in jet transport. After numerous mechanical problems and explosions in mid air, the type was put to rest in the early 60s. It was Boeing's 707/720 (improved version) that really started things off. After its successful debut years, the aircraft became the backbone of many airlines' fleets (along with the first 747 [-100 series]) and played a vital role in transporting passengers to their destinations safely. It proved to be an extremely reliable and safe airplane and held with it features which are borrowed greatly in Boeing's more modern aircraft today. In the 21st century, even after the 707 was discontinued over 20 years ago, the type remains in service with developing countries' airline fleets as these poorer nations can only afford to buy their aircraft second-hand from freight operators willing to sell them at a fair price. It only took Boeing's success with the 707 to realise what a key player they could become in the civil aviation market. Not even five years later, the 727 was launched and acted as a smaller aircraft to accompany the 707 on shorter and more exotic routes (it held the ability to land on extremely short runways) and in fact outsold its

Till Death Do We Part

Jamie Birdom was a loyal, obedient housewife. She would wake up everyday, check that the house was spotless, go shopping and come home to prepare dinner. She would wait for her husband to finish work and then eat dinner together. This was her daily routine. She didn't socialize, nearly never left the house for reasons other than getting groceries. However, on the first Wednesday of May, 2008, her routine changed. Her husband had started to stay back at the office a few weeks ago, it would be the occasional text message simply saying; Honey, I'm sorry, I won't be coming home tonight, start dinner without me, I'll be home as soon as I finish at the office. These messages became more common until they came nearly every night. Jamie was antisocial, but not stupid, she knew something was happening, just hadn't figured out what. That Wednesday, she did figure it out, as soon as she did, she wished she hadn't. The signs were there, she just ignored them, the lipstick on the collar, the smell of women's perfume but this couldn't be ignored. She held them in her hands, they were black, lacy, Victoria's Secret and they weren't hers. She had found them in the pocket of Charlie's pants. She couldn't understand why he had done this to her. She did everything for him, cook and cleaned but most of all she loved him and he loved her; well that's what she believed. She felt sick, like her

child development coursework visit 2

Visit number: 2 Date: 8/11/08 Age of Child: Time: 15:00 People Present: Harris's parents, my mum Aims of the Visit For my second visit I will focus on intellectual development because on my previous visit Harris enjoyed the jigsaw puzzle which is part of intellectual development. As Harris feels quite shy around me I want to do activities that he enjoys so that he can adjust to me. Some of the activities I have planned are; * A Lego activity- will help me observe his intellectual development and see how well he grasps different concepts. I will test his knowledge on different concepts by asking him some simple questions such as "where is the big block", "Which is the yellow block" ECT. I will also see how well he uses his language skills * A reading activity- will help me observe how well his concentration and memory is. This activity will also look at different concepts such as; shape, size and colour. I will ask Harris to point to different objects and see whether he remembers any characters or pictures. * A painting activity- will help me observe his writing skills. I will see what type of grasp Harris uses. As I have received some prior knowledge that Harris does not really enjoy drawing or writing I will conduct a painting activity, because the different coloured paints may excite Harris and he may then want to take it further and start writing in different

The Police Service

The police service Before starting this assignment I evaluated two public services that I was contemplating joining. For this I looked into the police and fire service and concluded that I would prefer to join the police service rather than the fire service. I am now going to look into the police service more in depth, exploring all options and forces that I would wish to join. The police service consists of 43 forces in England and Wales. Each has different roles. There are many ways in to the police a lot of people become special constables before applying or after being turned down by the police as an officer, this allows them the experience they require in situations that may arise in the police application form and the knowledge to deal with the responsibilities of being an officer. Also many people stay on to further education in order to improve there qualifications and fast tract into a higher job within the police service. In order to join the English police force the applicant must be aged eighteen years of age or above, the police prefer older candidates as they have more life experience, they must also be a British, Irish or a commonwealth citizen, they must be deemed of good character, must be physically fit and health and also have a full driving license or be in the process of learning. Writers Day

Writers Day at Fairfield University On May 2, 2008, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Writers Day at Fairfield University. The Writers Days was a conference for middle school writers and their teachers. During this conference, I was able to write and share pieces with my peers in different genres and styles. When I arrived at the Dolan School of Business, I registered with Mrs. Greenfield and found out what workshops I would be attending. I chose to attend Lyrics and Fiction. After registering, I had a light breakfast. At 9:00, there was a keynote speaker: Patricia Reilly Giff. Mrs. Giff is an author and teacher. Some of the books and series she has written include the following: Polk Street School Series, Lily's Crossing, All The Way Home, Pictures of Hollis Woods, and Nory Ryan's Song. Mrs. Giff shared some inside into her writing technique and shared with us how she gets her inspiration. I enjoyed listening to Mrs. Giff speak. First, I am a fan of her writing. I have read Pictures of Hollis Woods and Lily's Crossing. I enjoyed them very much because of their deeper meaning underneath the storyline. I also thought it was very cool to listen to Mrs. Giff talking about her struggle to publish her books and never to give up on something that you believe deeply in. My first workshop of the day was Lyrics. During the workshop, the class discussed why

The dropping of the atomic bomb : Justified?

Was the dropping of the bomb justified? In World War II, for the first time, the United States had to fight a war on two fronts. Though the central strategic use of resources was provided for concentrating first on the defeat of the European Axis, on the American side this principle was liberally interpreted, permitting conduct of an offensive war against Japan as well as against Germany in the years 1943-45. The U.S. Fleet, expanding after its initial setback at Pearl Harbor much as the Army had, provided the main strength for an offensive strategy in the Pacific (although the Army devoted at least one-third of its resources to the Pacific war, even at the height of war in Europe). Overall, the United States proved capable, once its resources were fully mobilized, of successfully waging offensives on two fronts simultaneously-a development the Japanese had not anticipated when they launched their attack on Pearl Harbor. The beginning trigger for the full-blown war against Japan and America was the events of Pearl Harbour, which overall actually unified divided people. The bombing of the two Japanese cities by the United States, was the first time an atomic bomb had ever been used in history. Consequently, after much death and destruction, Japan surrendered to Allies on August 14th. President Harry Truman, I am writing to you to inform you of the reasons as to why we, the

Romance & Revolution

Amber Anderson Professor Hofstetter Romance & Revolution September 2008 Definitions The Enlightenment was the foundation of the questioning the hierarchy of aristocracy and the Church. It took place in the eighteenth century throughout Germany, France and Britain. The impact of the Enlightenment on these different countries focused on different aspects of their societies. During this time of Western Philosophy, Reason was highly valued. This posed a threat to the established sources of power in the government. The expressed thought that the common people were still lower in the social hierarchy because of their birth rank was beginning to be resisted, along with the belief that the Church was the central truth. The background to this new way of thinking began in the late seventeenth century when the bourgeoisie began to realize the fact that they were paying taxes to the aristocracy that was not contributing to the improvement of society. Not only were the taxes not improving the state of the society, it was only being distributed to the group of rich citizens who truly had no use for it. The indignation of the middle class led to their encouragement of the working class to unite and oppose the foundation of their world such as they have known it to be for centuries. French Romanticism took part in the latter part of the eighteenth century. It was the outcome of the

Extended Programme Note

Extended Programme Note Title of Dance: Melting Mirror Solo Choreography Music: 'Tubular Bells' by Mike Oldfield Length of composition: 1 min 20 secs Description of music: I chose the music because it had a good structure; there were lots of different sections which was good for the structure I used. 'Tubular Bells' complimented the dance idea because it doesn't have any lyrics. The different sections were very clear because of the use of dynamics in the music. As the dance is abstract it was good that the music didn't have any lyrics. Summary of Dance Idea: My dance idea is a Movement Concept, to create a dance based upon Asymmetrical and Twirling moves. I had a main asymmetrical phrase which I worked on and added things to, to make the dance. Dance Description: In my dance I have a main phrase which is based upon the asymmetric part of my theme, it lasts for 3x8's and it is used three times throughout my dance once reversed and the other two normally. The other sections in my dance are more to do with Twirling and different jumps. Dance Structure: The structure I used for my dance is A, B, A1, B1, A.
