"... Everyone has a problem, it's just a matter how you solve 'em..." that line is from a a song by punk-rock quartet, Sum 41. My problem is the negativity thats become very evident. the negativity I'm talking about is in a music i love- Rap music. after talking to people we all agreed about the effects of rap music. So I decided to explore the cause of the current state of affairs.

Early rap was influenced by the story-telling styling of immigrants from Jamaica. The stories told were performed to/over a drum beat. Grandmaster Flash inadvertently created the art of scratching and the turntable. Yellow man and Afrika Bambaata were considered the grandfathers of Rap. But, it was the emcee, Kool Herc who revolutionized rap early on. The standard for early rap, was basically throwing out words that rhymed, over a beat. Even though most rappers were in their teens or older, the freestyles were made to be family friendly. So ninety-percent of the time there was no cussing and there was no using women as objects.

Flash forward to now and you'll see so many contradictions. Lyrics are still put over a drum beat. DJs' still scratch, but it's become more of an art form. The lyrics dropped are nowhere close to the lyricism of old. Artists that perform in the underground circuit understand this power of connecting words. Mainstream (rap) artists have lost almost any respect for the roots of rap music. Most emcees don't use the storytelling method anymore. The main subjects seem to contradict the things of old: Women/their body parts, Cars, Grilles and of all things the way we walk.
