Flash forward to now and you'll see so many contradictions. Lyrics are still put over a drum beat. DJs' still scratch, but it's become more of an art form. The lyrics dropped are nowhere close to the lyricism of old. Artists that perform in the underground circuit understand this power of connecting words. Mainstream (rap) artists have lost almost any respect for the roots of rap music. Most emcees don't use the storytelling method anymore. The main subjects seem to contradict the things of old: Women/their body parts, Cars, Grilles and of all things the way we walk.
In the mid 80's rap was introduced to gangsta rap. Gangsta Rap promoted homophobic, prostitution and misogynistic behaviors. Next in the 90's we were introduced to the idea of objectifying women, the need for money, and doing whatever it took to get hold of either one. Soon every underground artist that made it big conformed to the marketing strategies their peers had set forth. Bringing about the need to rap about pointless things. for some time it looked like Eminem might save rap from the state it was in. But, soon Eminem followed his fellow peers into rap's commercialism. Will Smith is the rare exception; he's followed the changes in rap, while staying to his roots in rap and hip-hop.
The ideology of this observation, is the state of todays rap is recorded in various medias. No matter what people say this does matter to society's growth. Because music does have a big role in today's society. The last generation and the next generation are Dependant on the musical media. Music should be enjoyed and talked about in a constructive manner. As a rap artist, I want people to listen to my music to not only get a message. But, to also have something that you can dance to, be it Christian,Spanish or mainstream rap. As a society we have a responsibility to promote a positive image.
In conclusion, the current state of affairs has a major effect on us as consumers. The end result of this will be a pimp ideal, where the world is ours and ours to control. For most parents I know, they don't want music to be a dictator for their children's future. They want their children to be wise media consumers and pick stuff that help them grow intellectually, while have fun.
