“It is not possible to be a true disciple of Jesus in the modern world”

Do you agree or disagree?

There are many varying, opposing answers to this question that seems at first glance simple enough to answer.  Jesus is not physically alive today, so people can’t possibly be true disciples of Jesus.  This is the argument used by many nowadays and this point of view is perfectly understandable.  The word ‘disciple’ means ‘one who follows’ and it is impossible to follow someone who is dead.  This may be true but in the Bible, we are told that Jesus is alive, sitting by the right hand of God, meaning that people who ask this type of question clearly have little faith in Jesus’ teachings that were brought to them directly from the bible.

 Not believing that Christians today can follow Jesus because he is dead raises the types of questions that scrutinise the faith of those asking such questions. For example, how can you say you believe in something if you only believe what you see?  If you are willing to believe that you can’t follow someone unless you can physically see him or her, you can’t possibly believe in God.  This is because nobody alive today can say they have seen God.  This is due to the fact that the Bible tells us that Jesus is the only way to God ...
