Arguments about the Synoptic Problem are of little help in trying to understand the teachings of the gospels. Discuss (17 marks)

The synoptic problem can be of little help because fundamentalists want the bible to be true. This forces them to see the differences between the gospels indicating some of the stories may not even be true or only worded differently to suit the gospel writer’s audience. This does not mean that the material of the bible is damaged; only that it is shown in a different light. Each of the gospel writers saw Jesus differently. For instance in Matthew’s gospel he calls Jesus teacher, in Mark’s it is Lord and in Luke’s it is master. This does not mean that each one of them regarded Jesus as more or less important however it could be argued that teacher is seen as ordinary, something Jesus was not.

    Although providing us with a greater insight into the gospels from many sources, this can be taken too far and begin trying to understand each detail when sometimes faith is needed. We have to remember that these are only theories to try and solve the synoptic problem which is why being open to criticism could be more useful than rejecting the synoptic problem. Another point to mention is that the gospels were not written till 30-35yrs later than Jesus’ resurrection therefore some of it may have turned into ‘Chinese whispers’.
