People also argue that in the essence it is ethically immoral to kill a criminal with the death penalty. This is because we do not have the right to take one´s life, as everytone has a right to life. If society sees murder as wrong, how can we kill a murderer.
“ We oppose the death penalty not just for waht it does to those guilty of heinous crimes, but for what it does to all of us: it offers the tragic illusion that we can defend life by taking life.”
(Most Reverend Joseph A. Fiorenza, President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops/ U.S Catholic Conference, 1999)
A favoring aspect for the death penalty is detterance. Theoretically, when one is aware of the consequences of one´s acts, this person would cogitate the corollary of his actions before actually doing so. This is means that if the aftermath of one´s action is capital punishment, a future criminal would decide weather to commit the crime or not. This, in many cases would make the difference weather a crime would be commited or not.
Also killing the killer would get rid of a menage to society. Therefore less crimes would be commited, which would enrich the quality of life worldwide.
Also, another issue is that the act of capital punishment has many flaws. An example is racism. In Georgia, a black man was defended in court by a former Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan (Spectator, Magazine, February 17, 2002). Also it is more likely that a black man is sentenced to death then a white man. Furthermore crimminals who are sentenced to death normally do not have money to pay for their lawyers, therefore they are given court-appointed lawyers. The problem with these lawyers is that their wages are very low, therefore they do not put the effort to try to protect their client, which ends up guilty and in many cases they are really innocent. These mistakes occur very often in courtrooms. This means that innocent people are being sentenced to the death penalty, and they aren´t even guilty. These mistakes cannot be made.
Although in coutries like Brazil, where the crime rate is enourmous, the only solution to crowded jail cell seems to be the death penalty.
I believe that now a days, capital punishment is a very useful resource when applied with careness. Our world needs this type of practical solution so the lives of innocent people will not get threatened. Capital punishment should be implimented in the judicial system, however with care, because innocent people can not be sent to the death penalty for a crime they did not
