Is Capital punishment right?

When I was young, I thought that death penalty was justified. That is, to punish wicked criminals who really deserves to die and has no right to live in a society where victims always seek revenge to offenders by enforcing the laws. However, now, I don't believe that the violence is the solution for all problems. We always believed that law always gave us a justice that includes appropriate punishments. When a man dies, then someone, the killer needs to be killed and if the law fails to do that task, then we conclude that evil is tolerated and society remains perilous with powerless justice. I think this is all because of westernized atmosphere where movies, books, music, entertainment and life is filled with violence and murder, and had become a major influence and part of our lives. For the capital punishment, it has lost its morality. It has become as immoral as any other crimes committed or expressed violence.

The reasons why we should not impose death penalty outweighs the reasons to support death penalty. Most people would like to think that enforcing capital punishment will deter the rate of homicides and other crimes. However, from the statistics, it is false. It showed ineffectiveness and some areas, it actually increased the murder rate higher. For example:

From 1976 to 1996, the number of executions per year in the United States has increased from 0 to just under 60. The homicide rate per 100,000 population has remained constant at just under 10. A 1995 study of the annual percentage increases in homicide rates in California showed that murders increased 10% a year during 1952 to 1967 when the state was executing people.
