Baptism is the rite of initiation into the Christian church and the family of God, it is important because it's the start of Christian life. Christians believe that because of the disobedience of Adam and eve in the Garden of Eden all people are born with Original Sin and this needs to be removed before they can begin their lives as Christians. The ceremony starts at the back of the chapel where the child and parents are welcomed and the priest invites them to come to the baptismal font where the priest then speaks to the parents "You have asked for your child to be baptised in doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him to practice the faith" He makes a sign of the cross on the child as a sign that he belongs to God. After a reading, which is usually about being born again to eternal life, the priest gives a short homily on its meaning. The bidding prayers are said for the child, parents and godparents. Next the exorcism, in which the priest raises his hand and says "o, God you sent your son to cast out the power of Satan, set this child free from original sins and he then anoints the child with oil of catechumens. It is after this the child is brought to the baptistery where the parents and god- parents renew their faith and answers the baptismal promises for the child which will be renewed at confirmation. Water is poured three times over the forehead

WHAT HAPPENS AT A INFANT AND ADULT BAPTSIM?

BAPTISM COURSEWORK SAKIB AHMED 114GH PART A WHAT HAPPENS AT A INFANT AND ADULT BAPTSIM When a baby is born into a Christian family, the parents decide when they want to baptise the baby or wait till the infant grows up and let it decide for it self because it is the parent's responsibility and duty to chose a religion for the baby. Baptism is a religious act of purification by water to show a person has accepted Christianity most churches baptise infants but some also baptise adults for example the Baptists. Before baptism parents attend a preparation class to fully understand what they are promising. At an infant baptism (Roman Catholics) promises are made by the god parents these promises are made because the godparents take a special interest in the child to encourage the child in the Christian faith. Usually a male infant will have two males and one female godparent and a female infant will have two females and one male godparent. Sometimes there can be more. Holy water is sprinkled onto the infants forehead this symbolises the sins getting washed away (the original sin) also the sign of a cross is made ,the cross symbolises the sign that the child now belongs to god. A baptism service is a public service to show the Christian community that a new Christian has joined Prayers and blessings are said to the child this is because

'Children cannot be disciples so they cannot be Christians either.' Would a Christian agree or disagree? Give reasons showing that you have thought about more than one point of view.

Elliott Morgan R.E. Coursework - AO3 'Children cannot be disciples so they cannot be Christians either.' Would a Christian agree or disagree? Give reasons showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. All children are valuable in the eyes of God. They ours God's own creation, so why should they be excluded from discipleship? I believe that children should be taught how to be a Christian from an early age. It will teach them what is right and what is wrong. It will influence them for the rest of their lives so they grow up to be decent loving people. Children who attend catholic schools would have a bigger advantage on being a disciple as they have been taught about Jesus about his teachings from an early age. The message would stay with them so it can develop with the child's understanding. Prayer would help this in the classroom and in R.E lessons as they grow up. A child is more open and welcoming like a true disciple. They are full of love and trust and are very caring. They're also very dependant on other people, so instead of saying that they can't be disciples or Christians, we should encourage them towards the true path instead of putting them down and leaving them apart. They are humans after all just like the rest of us, they need to be looked after properly. However, I also believe that children, although they seem the perfect candidates for

'The similarities between Infant and Adult Baptism outweigh the differences'.

'The similarities between Infant and Adult Baptism outweigh the differences'. Many people have questioned whether or not the similarities between infant and adult baptism actually outweigh the differences. In my opinion there are more differences than similarities between infant and adult baptism. Below I have outlined the differences and similarities between the two. One similarity between infant and adult baptism is that water is used in both services. However the difference comes in the blessing of water. In infant baptism the priest blesses the baptismal water with a prayer and breathes on the water in the shape of a cross. But in adult baptism the water in which the adult is immersed is not blessed. The places in which adults and infants are baptised are also different. Infant Baptism takes place at the Font, (which is in an eastwardly direction- symbolising resurrection). Adult Baptism takes place in a pool. The difference in shape and size also means that the form in which the baptismal water is used is different. At the Font either the baby's body (not head) is submerged into the water or the water is poured over the baby's head. However in adult baptism the candidate is totally immersed beneath the water. This signifies that the candidate dies to their old, sinful life and is buried with Jesus. The significance of having the water poured over the baby

Central features of Baptism

Bethan Moorcroft A01 Describe the central features of infant and believers baptism. Explain clearly the Christian beliefs which lie behind each feature you describe. Baptism has been a huge part of Christian life since Jesus himself was baptised. Initially only adults were baptised, but people then wanted their children to be welcomed into God's family too and so there are now two forms of baptism. Believers' and Infant baptism are both used for this initiation. Each of them have certain features that have an importance in the ceremony, some of them being the same. Both Believers' and Infant baptism are done in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Water is also used in both ceremonies. It is a fundamental feature in all Christian baptisms. It is, of course, essential to life, and so shows that baptism begins another life, an eternal life. Water is used for cleansing too. Baptism brings inner cleanliness, cleansing the soul from sin. And finally, water also refreshes. Baptism refreshes the candidate by giving them joy and strength. They have begun a new and exciting journey with God. Infant baptism is the most common of the two. Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist and United Reform Churches practise infant baptism, each performing a liturgical service. The ceremony takes place around the font. This is a large basin or structure that holds blessed water and it is

Infant Versus Believers Baptism

Infant Versus Believers Baptism Many people have said that baptism is "the troubled waters of the church", but in my view u really have to understand the meaning of it all to make a judgment on it. Jesus gave his apostles an order that was "make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost" (Mathew 28:19-20) The meaning of the word baptism or to baptise comes from the Greek word, baptizo or baptisma. These in turn come from a root word bapto, which means to dip. Many believe that as Jesus was immersed into the water that all baptisms should be like this but as we will find out this is not the case. In many of the churches infant baptism is common and to immerse infants into water totally would be impractical. Many argue that because the baptizo means to plunge that this is the necessary procedure for the baptism. Also they think that because Jesus was baptised as an adult that all should be baptised as adults and have adapted the bible to suit them saying that Jesus only wanted adults baptised. There is no mention of children or indeed infants being baptised in the New Testament but the word for household 'oikos' is used which includes children; if children then were not meant to be baptised or included in the ceremony another word would have been used. Some say however that those baptised as children do not lead

Outline the baptismal ceremony and explain the symbols used.

Outline the baptismal ceremony and explain the symbols used. The baptismal service begins at the door, it is here that the priest will greet the people. He asks the parents what name they have decided to call their newborn baby, and what they require of the church. The parents will require baptism from the church and in return the church requires that the parents fulfil their responsibilities to bring their child up to follow and practice the faith of Jesus. Godparents are then asked if they are both willing to help in the task of establishing the faith into child. The priest then signs the child with the cross claiming the Childs dedication to Christ. The parents and Godparents also do the same. The service moves to the Lectern, where a reading is presented on a topic relating to baptism, followed by a short sermon explaining baptism. Prayers of faithful followed by the Litany where the saints are asked to pray for the child. Catechumen is anointed on the forehead of the baby. This signifies that they will be open to sin and temptation throughout their lives and this is to give them strength to resist temptation. A prayer of exorcism is also said at this point however this does not mean that they are possessed by evil but simply by being born they are surrounded by evil, sin and temptation. It is at the font where, the water for baptism is blessed. As the child is too

What is a mass?

RS Coursework Describe the mass The church is a place that Catholics go. The Catholics are supposed to go to the Church everyday and you must go to the mass every Sunday. The mass is a way, which communicates between the followers and Jesus. Now I will introduce the mass: The Sunday mass is the most common mass that Catholics attended. In Sunday mass, we must have a priest to lead the mass. For the beginning, we sing an entrance Hymn to sing in praise of Jesus and welcome him. After that, we must make a sign of cross and have a greeting by the priest because they believe priests are the representatives of Jesus. Then we have the Penitential Rite, Penitential Rite means saying sorry to God. This process is to ask Jesus to forgive our sins. After the Penitential Rite, we will have the Liturgy of The Word and we will have the "Gloria" before that. Usually in Sunday mass, we sing out the Gloria. Gloria is the opening prayer, which expresses the theme of the celebration, follows the prayer of worship, thanks and praise. (Dimensions of Christianity) When the Gloria have finished, we have the Liturgy of The Word, three readings from the bible, there is one reading from old testaments, one reading from new testaments then the Gospel. After the Gospel is the Homily. During the Homily, the priest tells us what the people should learn from the reading and the Gospel. Then we will

AO2 BAPTISM (RE)

Ao2 Baptism Christians teach that baptism is a Sacrament which means that it is a sign of the giving of God's grace and salvation to a person. Christians look upon baptism as the beginning of a life-long relationship with God. Most Christians today believe in baptism and encourage it to be a tradition. Some also believe it is the eternal life because it allows a person to make a fresh start and seek a new way of life and all their sins are washed away. In Mark's gospel it begins with John the Baptist. He was preaching in the desert and he had an urgent message turn away from your sins and be baptised and God will forgive all your sins, (Mark 1 9-11) I think this has a lot of influence on parents who understand this statement and believe it, so they have their children baptised so that God will forgive them for their sins, throughout their lives. Also this is why Adult baptism today tends to be more popular because as people get older they want to be forgiven for all their sins and cleansed of them so instead of them just doing a reconciliation they can be baptised. Different Christians believe different things and some believe that the gift of the Holy Spirits given at baptism and that the Holy Spirit enters the persons body and gives them a new way of life enabling the Christian to share in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Christians believe that a person who has been

Belivers Baptism

BAPTISM In believers' baptism the person being baptised is usually in his teen years or older. This is so he is old enough to be confident that he really has put his faith in Christ. There is a large tank at the front of the church full of water which he and the pastor enter. He would wear a white shirt normally to show that he is clean of sin and has turned to the Lord. He is asked some questions by the pastor to openly confirm that he is now a witness for Jesus. In some churches before his immersion the congregation sometimes sing a hymn followed by the pastor saying a prayer. Then the person is immersed. His whole body is put under the water and then lifted up out of the water. This is to signify that he has died to a life of sin and is now resurrected in a life for Jesus. It is also to show that his whole body has been cleaned - not by the water, it merely signifies that our soul is cleansed from sin by the blood of Jesus Christ. Water is used because it is the substance that it usually used for cleaning things so by being baptised in water it shows you are now clean from sin. Water also gives life, revives us and helps to feed us. When the person emerges from the water the pastor exclaims, "You have been baptised "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."" (Matthew; 28; 19). People get baptised to publicly proclaim that they have become Christians.
