The word 'disciple' is used to describe the very first followers of Jesus. This term is also applied to anyone who calls him or herself a Christian. The word disciple is derived from the Latin-discipulus, meaning pupil or learner. Jesus was not the only person to have disciples there are also references to the disciples of the Pharisees and also John the Baptists' disciples. The word is also used to describe the twelve apostles of Jesus. They were chosen to help Jesus on his mission of spreading the word of God and founding a new Christian people. They were also chosen to continue in Jesus' work after his death. The story of the Calling of the First Disciples tells us about when Jesus chose the apostles. I find it peculiar that Jesus should choose perfect strangers to carry out such important tasks such as healing the sick and spreading the word of God. The men he chose were fishermen I think Jesus had a motive for this. He wanted to choose the right people. Fishermen are generally patient, and determined, qualities needed for discipleship. Jesus wanted to communicate with the people. He knew that they would listen to the disciples, who were ordinary people. He needed someone to communicate with outcasts, to make them believe that they can change. Perhaps this is the reason he chose Levi. The disciples Jesus chose were to be his most loyal companions. They had to be willing

A disciple is defines as someone who listens and learns.

A disciple is defines as someone who listens and learns. A disciple of Christ is someone who follows his teachings and the teachings of the church. To be a true disciple of Christ you must following him both spiritually and mentally. Disciples of Jesus is expected to follow the Ten Commandments, live without comfort or luxury, accept persecution with grace and tolerance and live their lives according to the gospel. All this is outlines in the parable of The Rich Young Man, mark's gospel 10- 21. This is where a rich young man asks Jesus what he should do to become a disciple Jesus tells him to sell all he has and give all his money to the poor. The first of Jesus' disciples were expected to drop everything to follow Christ. As Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee he was two fishermen, Simon and his brother Andrew, catching fish with a net. Jesus said to them "come with me and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and went with him. He went a little further on and saw two other brothers James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat getting their nets ready. As soon as Jesus saw them he called to them; they left their father Zebedee with hired men and went with Jesus. (Mark's gospel- 1:16-20) This passage shows what Disciples were expected to give up to follow Jesus, the main point is that to be a true disciple you must

Chris Hunt OCR Specification A 1930 Coursework Approved C/W Title 2003 GCSE Religious Studies Centre No: 10858 Discipleship (a)(i) WHAT IS MENT BY THE TERM 'DISCIPLE' The term disciple means a follower of Jesus. The word disciple and discipline are linked. They come from the same roots because a disciple has to have discipline .The word disciple actually means pupils or people who are learning. I also stated that a disciple of Christ is a person who follows Christ and learns His principles and Disciples others in His teachings. I would like to say that each day is a day of opportunity for each of us to share our faith with others that do not know Jesus Christ the way that we do in a personal relationship. Here are some probing questions that we could be asked. Discipleship today means going to church often and trying to follow the ways of Jesus. Disciples are very devoted Christians. It is very hard to be a disciple. A disciple has abided to the Ten Commandments. Sometimes apostle and disciple are used to mean the same thing but an apostle is usually referred to as one of the chosen twelve. Jesus had high expectations of his disciples. These included going out in pairs to teach people, and heal their illnesses. He also gave them very careful instructions. They were told to be like the other very poor

Explain what a study of Mark's Gospel can tell us about Discipleship.

Chris Yates 10.S Explain what a study of Mark's Gospel can tell us about Discipleship. In this essay, I am going to show that a disciple is ready to sacrifice all, and to look at different cases of cost and rewards. The word disciple means 'follower'. Christian discipleship involves faith and commitment to god, self-sacrifice, service to others, using your time, money, and energies, as god wants you too, not as the world temps you to. It involves belonging to god's family and the church. Disciples are ready to sacrifice all (cost) but receive eternal life in return (reward). Jesus first call is in Mark 1: 14-20, where Jesus asked two fishermen Simon and his brother John to sacrifice all by saying: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" At once they dropped their nets and followed Jesus. This shows they had great faith in Jesus and teaches us that we should do the same. In Mark chapter 2: 13-17 Jesus chose a tax collector, Levi (who was considered a sinner) to be one of his disciples. This meant that even though the disciples may not like him, they had to put up with him and they way he lived (cost) this teaches us to like everybody and that we cannot pick or choose who we want to be our friends. In Mark 8: 34-38 Jesus tells us that if we want to be a disciple, it may involve suffering, rejection and even death by saying: "If anyone wants to be a follower of

'Is it possible to be a true disciple of Jesus today.'

RE Coursework 'Is it possible to be a true disciple of Jesus today.' Being a disciple requires many things from you, some you may like, some you may hate. Many people around the world find it hard, some different. The first 12 disciples of Jesus had to make sacrifices as soon as Jesus called them. Such as leaving their families, friends and possessions. Imagine someone telling you to follow them leaving everything behind. Now, if that was me I would probably just laugh at them and walk off. But I guess the way society has changed over the many years makes a difference on what sacrifices we would make today. In the Gospel, Jesus said to the rich man 'to receive eternal life in heaven, you must sell all your possessions and that money to the poor'. It would be impossible for someone to do that today in this society because people have a lot of responsibilities and their job or life could affect so many other people around them. The disciples gave up all their had just to follow Jesus, now if we were to do that today how many of us would survive. It's absolutely impossible, with out any money how are we supposed to eat or cloth ourselves. I'm not saying go and give everything you completely have but by not doing this we should give what we can, by giving to charity. Or if you don't have anything to give you can give your time by doing volunteer work or something to help

Discipleship - St. Mark's Gospel can tell us a lot about the nature of discipleship.

AO1 St. Mark's Gospel can tell us a lot about the nature of discipleship. A disciple is defined as someone who believes in and helps to spread the teachings of another. It is someone who learns from a religious leader; in the case of the twelve disciples this was Jesus, and who wishes to live life according to the leader's wishes and commands. In the Gospel we read about The Call of the First Disciples, Jesus told Simon and Andrew they would become fishers of men, this means the disciples were to convert people to the way of God. The reaction of the two men is very surprising; they rose and followed him without hesitation or questioning, when Jesus made a demand of them they answered straight away. This story tells us that our discipleship must be the most important thing in our life, that we would leave everything we have to follow Jesus as God's call is the most important than anything else. Being a disciple requires many sacrifices, the most important being Anyone who wishes to be a follower of mine must leave self behind, he must take up his cross, and come with me. This is to be interpreted as us becoming servants, to put your wishes behind the wishes of others and to not want anything except belonging to God. We must be prepared to die for their faith and for God. In this passage Jesus is also inviting us to follow his lead but this can involve suffering,

Explain how this teaching of discipleship might affect the life of a Christian today. In Mark 8: 27-33 Jesus says: "If anyone would come after me, they must deny him and take up his cross and follow me

These passages show how people responded to Jesus. We see how the apostles were in awe of him, how they wondered at what he could do and what he knew. We see Peter being so awed by Christ that he asked him to go away. Jesus, however, did not go away, and Peter followed him. Levi, who is often thought to be identical with Matthew, was a tax collector. This made him an outcast and a collaborator with the enemy. Jesus called him as a disciple. The message of these passages is that God can call whomever he wishes to be his disciple. Even if a person has been a sinner they can be called by Christ. All that matters is that the person called gives a positive response to Christ. This can also introduce to Christians the idea of vocation and our responsibility as Christians to follow it. A vocation is a calling to live a particular way of life. Everyone has their own particular vocation. For some it means being a priest, a brother or a nun. Some people find their vocation in the professions such as nursing or teaching. There is something about how Christians live their lives which makes us value the caring professions and public service, but any job can be a vocation if it is the one you feel God wants you to do. Yet most Catholics are married and their vocation is to raise a family. This is valued as a very important vocation but the most important thing is to live your vocation

In the first section I will explore how the disciples were called and challenged according to Jesus as well as the disciples jobs/duties. Discipleship revolves about following Jesus both physically and spiritually. A disciple is a person who learns and believes in a leader and helps to spread the teachings of another. A disciple of Jesus would be expected to respond immediately to what Jesus says, love there neighbour, willing to forgive sins, be generous, accept persecution and live there life's using gospel values in everything that they say and do. In St. Mark's Gospel what can we learn about discipleship? Explain how this might affect a Christian today.

R.E coursework In St. Mark's Gospel what can we learn about discipleship? Explain how this might affect a Christian today. A disciple is a student or learner. Jesus chose twelve men to learn God's message from him. Jesus was no ordinary teacher; if men wanted to learn the Jewish law they would go and choose a Rabbi to study under. Jesus was different because he chose his followers. E.g. Mk 1:14-21 The first disciples Jesus chose were four fishermen Mk 1:14-21. The first two were Simon and his brother Andrew, he then called two more brothers, James and John. The next person Jesus chose was a tax collector named Levi. The Jewish people saw tax collectors as traitors because they worked for the Roman authorities and were known to cheat people out of money. We are not sure in which order Jesus chose the next seven but we do know he called twelve men. The choice of these men could and would have been surprising for many people, for example Levi was a traitor in most peoples eyes but Jesus justified this when he said, "I have come to call sinners, not respectable people." This means that he came to get sinners like Levi back on track. He was also saying that the Kingdom of God is for all people not just for perfect people. Another reason for why Jesus called Levi is maybe because Jesus saw good qualities in him. Levi would have been used to getting abuse and as a disciple you

Explain how the teachings about being a disciple might make a difference in the everyday lives of Christian believers today

Discipleship Coursework Question 2 There are many varied ways in which the teaching about being a disciple might make a difference in the everyday lives of Christian believers today. Some of the teachings in Mark's Gospel change people outlook on life and although Mark uses traditional teachings they are relevant to people today. A job choice from a Christian following this teaching about being a disciple may differ significantly from someone who is not. For example, one person may choose a job for its convenience and for the materialistic pleasures that may come with it (money, cars etc) but another person may choose a job that is less convenient and pays less because they wish to embody the Christian lifestyle of being a disciple. In Mark's Gospel is the account of "The widow's offering" (Mk 12:41-44) In this account we learn that it is not the physical amount that we give which counts, rather it is the sacrifice we make. From Mark's Gospel we learn important teachings about money and sacrifice. Jesus did not ask his disciples to give a little of their time and energy, he wants everything. But this is a huge challenge to people today in that we have many things to distract us from the right path, for example: fame, power, money and status. Money can be a barrier to and often takes the place of God in people's lives today; we have become a consumer driven society where
