Discuss different beliefs around death.
Death I have always been slightly afraid of death, how I would cope if someone close to me died, or what happens to me when I die. I have been brought up as Church of England, and so, therefore I believe that when we die, our souls go to heaven. However, I also have had a non-religious input, as well. It is for this reason, that I am not entirely convinced that there is a God, and so, I am don't think that I am completely 'entitled' to believe that I will go to heaven when I die ~ (ridiculous, I know!) I believe however, that regardless of how amazing and peaceful heaven is, death (ie the gateway to heaven) is not something to look forward to. I am of the view that life is sacred, and that, I am certain about. I do not believe that we are reincarnated, because I have had more Christian impetus, and so I believe that after death, the soul's life on earth stops, and stays in heaven for eternity. As a result of this project, I have become much more aware of the beliefs of other religions, about death, and although it hasn't changed my opinion, it has made me reflect on what 'death' means to other people. It has made me realise, how different religions, have found ways of coming to terms with death, for example: * Christians believe that when a person dies, they will go to heaven ~ a place of complete harmony, which means that for the people left behind, the death of
Capital Punishment - In the United States, about 13,000 people have been legally executed since colonial times.
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT In the United States, about 13,000 people have been legally executed since colonial times. By the 1930´s up to 150 people were executed yearly. There are 7 main methods in current use worldwide. These are: hanging, the electric chair, the firing squad, the gas chamber, the lethal injection, the guillotine and stoning. The arguments in favour of Capital Punishment are: the Bible; the Bible requires the death penalty for a wide variety of crimes. Justice/Vengeance; many people feel that killing convicted murderers will satisfy their need for justice and/or vengeance. Deterrence; many people feel that the death penalty will deter crimnals from killing. Value of human life; "It is by exacting the highest penalty for the taking of human life that we affirm the highest value of human life" (Edward Coch). "Let the punishment fit the crime" Cost; Once a convicted murder is executed and buried, there are no further maintenance costs to the state. Safety; once a convicted murderer is executed and buried, there is no chance that he will break out of jail and kill or injure someone. The arguments against capital punishment are: the Bible; some people feel Christians that the death penalty is no longer required. Effect on society; some people feel that permitting premeditated murder is totally unacceptable, even if done by the state. "It violates our belief in
Creative Writing - The New World.
English Creative Writing The New World Sliding my auto card into the slot, the door of my apartment opens. I walked straight to the pantry room where a gigantic revolving glass container stands. It contains hundreds of small multi-coloured pills and these pills must be taken three times a day. Through the brilliance of scientists, each pill contains just the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and even water for a person. As it is honey-coated, one can just suck or swallow it without any water. Living in this modern age where the advancement of technology has gone beyond human expectations, life has certainly become different. The breakthrough in technology has enabled human to conquer death. Special pills containing vaccinations against various diseases have been manufactured and their effectiveness proven. Immortality reigns in every being and the word 'death' has slided into obscurity. Ask any passer-by and you will realise how alien the concept of death is. As a result, visitors to our planet will never find burial grounds and cremation sites anywhere. In fact, the word 'coffin' has long been omitted in the latest version of the dictionary. Professional undertakers are never in the occupation list for they will never get any customers. With immortality gained, death cannot be sought after through suicides or car accidents. In the aspect of suicide, a
The Banana Farmer of Billingshurst
The Banana Farmer of Billingshurst Once upon a time in a magical faraway land there lived a poor banana farmer in a log cabin in the woods of Billingshurst. There had been a poor banana harvest and Mr Banana Farmer was down on his luck. He decided that the banana farming wasn't working out and so the banana farmer decided to become an accountant and sell his banana farm to an evil multinational corporation that would surely turn it into a sewage plant and kill everything nearby. But he didn't care as he was going to live in Birmingham and start 'Mr banana's accountants' where he would live a dull life. He didn't seem to care about the innocent banana-blood that would be spilled should he let evil industries inc. take over. That night as he began to drift into sleep, a magical banana-fairy (called Frank) visited Mr Banana farmer and told him the error of his ways, Mr B.f. decided that It was rightfully his duty to take on evil, faceless corporations that threatened to wipes out small Banana-farming. Operations like his own! He immediately used his super powers to fly to America, home of many of the companies that were trying to get rid of competitive banana farming for good, he looked in disgust at the greed that surrounded him and used his banana-psychic powers to summon the nearby bananas, they were pale and weak because of the neglect they received from the corporation, Mr
Capital punishment
Capital punishment essay I believe that the journalist assigned to witness the hanging was and is trying to persuade the general public what a 'grim business' capital punishment is. The journalist works for the official gazette and why he thinks so badly of theses hangings. We can see that he is angry with the countries wish to use capital punishment even though it's stopped. The people in favour of capital punishment are being persuaded by the report to forget about bringing back capital punishment. He is out to shock the readers by how gruesome it actually is for example the reporter mentions that "it is doubtful that if those who seek the reinintroduction of capital punishment have ever seen a hanging". This promises chances of more gory details grabbing attention if they are for capital punishment. I believe that the writing style is angry as the words he/she uses like "was a sort of death row". The report is about the last ever hanging in New Zealand, as some of the public want it back. He has witnesses these horrible events and is determined to keep it as it is .I think he mentions the parliament and court rooms as everyone would expect and this is a vile gloomy place where killings is held. He is comparing what the public may think. He makes various comments on length of the rope and how a male ejaculates and evacuates his bowels to surprise and shock the reader
Argument Against Capital Punishment.
Argument Against Capital Punishment. The Capital Punishment argument has raged in America for over four hundred years. The supporters of capital punishment claim use the "eye for an eye" argument. Those who appose it say that death does not teach the criminal anything in the future. In recent years, with the development of new technology the debate has become more heated. Today specialists can further analyze crime scenes and can better determine who is to blame for the crime. Recently there have been people freed from jail because of evidence found proving them innocent. Capital punishment can be inflicted on the wrong person and therefore The Capital Punishment debate in the United States has gone on for over four hundred should be abolished Capital punishment is a cruel and unusual form of punishment. The victims of Capital suffer great physical pain during their death. Those killed by the electric chair are electrocuted an average of 17 seconds before the perish. A Lethal Injection victim's arm is injected with a poison that makes there muscles violently spasm for over 30 seconds before their heart shuts itself down. Criminals who are given the gas chamber suffer for nearly a minute before dieing. The gas is inhaled and the victim begins to feel ill. Massive vomiting occurs and the victim often dies by choking on their own vomit rather than the gas itself. Several
"Outline sacred and secular views towards life after death"
"Outline sacred and secular views towards life after death" According to some religious views, death is not the end. Many religions believe that when you die you will be judged and be sent to heaven or hell. Islam belies that when people die they must be washed and dressed in a white cloth to show purity. Then they can be judged by Allah to go to either paradise or hell. Jews believe a body should be buried in concentrated ground, this is also for purity. When preparing a body, Jews wear white. But at the funeral black is worn and the family should wear a black jumper and tear it in mourning. There is then seven days of mourning and a celebration to show the happiness of the afterlife. Jews also believe that death is a part of life and that spirits should return to God. Christians also believe that we will die and be sent either to heaven or to hell. The parish will get the body and pray over it, then there is a church service where friends and family are invited. Christians believe that God judges souls as soon as the body dies. They also believe that God is with them in death. In the past there have been many different practices and attitudes about death. Some of the most recognized practices are those of the Egyptians. Egyptian religion was centered round a belief in a magnificent afterlife. Egyptians believed that many Gods would protect them in the afterlife,
THE unsolved murder of Lesane Parish Crooks, more widely known as Tupac Amaru Shakur has finally been solved.
Amy Kang THE unsolved murder of Lesane Parish Crooks, more widely known as Tupac Amaru Shakur has finally been solved. The legendary rapper died on the 13/11/96 after being shot 4 times by an unknown offender with a semiautomatic pistol. Suspicions targeted Suge Knight, the president of Death Row records, Notorious B.I.G and even Tupac himself, some believed he faked it for publicity. Evidence now shows that a Compton gang, the Southside Crips carried out the shooting because of Tupac beating one of the gang members just a few hours before. Orlando Anderson, the member who had been abused by Tupac, fired the fatal shots. Anderson was killed one year later in another unrelated gang shooting. Notorious B.I.G (real name Christopher Wallace), whom Tupac had been feuding with for over a year, supplied the murder weapon along with an agreement to pay the Southside gang $100 000 000 if they went through with the killing. Notorious B.I.G was killed during a shooting 6 months later. His murder case is unsolved. Tupac Amaru Shakur Despite the public setting of the event no one was ever arrested for the murder. A large amount of his followers believed this to be because of racial discrimination. Police however argue that they did all they could and witnesses refused to co-operate. They also contend that a lot of Tupac associates, like the man himself, had criminal records and
Capital Punishment
The word "capital" in "capital punishment" refers to a person's head. In the past, people were often executed by severing their head from their body. As of 2000-OCT-19, during the last decade of the 20th century, 547 prisoners have been executed in the United States -- one third of them in Texas. Another 3,500 wait on death rows. None have been executed in Canada; that country abolished the death punishment decades ago. The United States is one of the very few industrialised countries in the world which executes criminals. It is one of the few countries in the world which executes mentally ill persons, persons with very low IQ, and child murderers (i.e. persons who were under 18 at the time of their crime). When asked whether they prefer to keep or abolish the death penalty, about 60 to 80% of American adults say that they want to retain capital punishment. Numbers vary depending upon the precise wording of the question asked by the pollsters. When asked whether they would like to see executions continue or have them replaced with a system that guaranteed: Each year there are about 250 people added to death row and 35 executed. The death penalty is the harshest form of punishment enforced in the United Sates today. Once a jury has convicted a criminal offence they go to the second part of the trial, the punishment phase. If the jury recommends the death penalty and the
As much as any controversy, capital punishment is a major issue in American politics.
As much as any controversy, capital punishment is a major issue in American politics. In 2002, 71 persons in 13 States were executed -- 33 in Texas; 7 in Oklahoma, 6 in Missouri; 4 each in Georgia and Virginia, 3 each in Florida, South Carolina, and Ohio; 2 each in Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina; and 1 each in Louisiana and California. In 2003, 65 inmates were executed, 6 fewer than in 2002. The death penalty has become a topic of serious controversy in recent years. In particular, debate has been made over whether or not the death penalty is an appropriate punishment for severe crimes such as murder. Although the topic has been the subject of recent debate, it is interesting to note that the basic opinions on both sides of the argument date back to ancient times. There are essentially two justifications for criminal punishment. The first is retributive. It is the idea that criminals deserve to be punished, that it is morally right to punish wrong acts. The second justification is utilitarian. Under this theory, punishment is justified because it makes society better off in some way, perhaps by deterring potential criminals, protecting society by segregating criminals, or by reforming the criminal such that he/she can one day rejoin society. I don't believe either of these justifications for criminal punishment supports the use of the death penalty. To take
