Mark Cranshaw 1P RE Coursework A01 Pilgrimage is a journey to sacred places that are inspired by religious devotion. The place that is visited is usually where events have happened in the past that are relevant or important to what the pilgrim believes. Pilgrimage is an ancient custom which has changed over many years. It used to be a long and dangerous journey, but now many treat it like a holiday. A very early example of a pilgrim was Hsüan Tsang, a 7th century Chinese Buddhist; he travelled 65,000 km/ 40,000 mi during his 16 year pilgrimage through India and China. Here is a picture of Hsüan Tsang, returning home from India: Another old pilgrimage tradition which happened in the 1400's was a pilgrimage from London to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. He was an English priest and politician who lived in the era of Henry II. He was appointed archbishop of Canterbury; but interests in the church conflicted with interests to do with the crown and Thomas Becket was assassinated in 1170. He was declared a saint, and his shrine became the busiest centre of pilgrimage in England. Here is an image of Thomas Becket: There are several different types of pilgrimage. Some people used to go on pilgrimages as punishment for a crime. They did this to gain forgiveness and remorse. The journeys were often very long, and hard. Some carried armour to make it harder for

Pilgrimage. Many Roman Catholic Christians feel that going on a pilgrimage makes them feel more aware of God.

Weronika Marciniak Pilgrimage The Oxford English Dictionary defines a pilgrimage as being 'a journey to a sacred place for religious reasons.' Many Roman Catholic Christians feel that going on a pilgrimage makes them feel more aware of God. They have time to deepen their understanding of God by experiencing the places connected with the life of his son, Jesus Christ and time to talk to Him about the things they are concerned about. This may be to fulfil a vow made to God to participate in the pilgrimage, knowing that He will answer their prayers. The prayers may ask God to physically cure someone of a disability or sickness or to spiritually heal a person, to forgive them, to help them overcome a problem so that they can return home feeling inspired and determined to change. Through their prayers, pilgrims may also want to thank God for blessing them with the opportunity to spend their time being closer with God in spiritual surroundings. I will now look at two places of pilgrimage Lourdes, France and Rome, Italy to explore the possible reasons as to why some Roman Catholics do decide to go on pilgrimage. Lourdes stands at the foot of the Pyrenees and is perhaps the most commonly visited of the destinations of pilgrimage. Each year over five million people visit Lourdes, many of whom are sick or disabled. There are many reasons as to why people go there, one of the most

In this coursework I am going to talk about a Christian place of pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage Pilgrimage is a journey to a distant sacred goal, it is found in all the great religions of the world. It is a journey both outwards to places and for spiritual improvement. It can express past evils or the search for a good future. The pilgrim may pursue spiritual need in the sacred sites of a particular faith or seek a miracle through God or a saint. Throughout the world pilgrims move invisibly in huge numbers among the tourists of today. One way to fully experience the sacredness of the universe is to become a pilgrim. Since the past time people have sought out places of revelation in the landscape, on holy mountains, by curative springs, at oracular caverns and the shrines of saints. Pilgrimage is currently a popular term used to refer to almost any excursion to a place that has special meaning. The ritual is different for each religion. But generally people seek out the holy places important to them, perform rituals, and pray for themselves, others, or situations. What pilgrims do at the shrines is sit and meditates on the saints. Pilgrims pray to feel their presence, open our hearts, and receive their sacred love. In this way they directly experience love. Pilgrimage is one way to search for the deeper meaning and purpose in our lives and to try and get a deeper and spiritual understanding of god. Through pilgrimage the spirit is renewed and the general

Explain why going on pilgrimage is important for many Roman Catholic Christians. With reference to two places of pilgrimage explain the meaning and practices associated with them.

Rachael O'Reilly Explain why going on pilgrimage is important for many Roman Catholic Christians. With reference to two places of pilgrimage explain the meaning and practices associated with them. A pilgrimage is a symbolic journey to a sacred place, or a person has undertaken as an act of worship. Many people feel they have to go on pilgrimages to feel closer to God. There are many sites of pilgrimage situated around the world and people visit these places for many different reasons. People go on pilgrimage to visit places where Jesus lived and taught, to ask God for a particular favor, to seek forgiveness of their sins, to thank God for a blessing they've received, to fulfil a promise to a loved one or to have a relaxing holiday. For Roman Catholics pilgrimage is important for renewing and strengthening faith, it is one of the most public declarations of our faith and through it we should hope to become better Christians. The two main sites of Christian pilgrim in the world are Lourdes and the Holy Land. At Lourdes it is believed that in 1858 Bernadette Soubirous, the teenage daughter of a poor French family saw a vision of an unknown lady at a cave by a river in Lourdes. After more visions the woman revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception and caused a spring to flow in the grotto. The site was recognized as holy in 1862 and in 1866 Bernadette became a nun.

Explain why some Christians go on pilgrimage and the effect which this might have on them.

Explain why some Christians go on pilgrimage and the effect which this might have on them. In a way, this subject can be divided into two; the pilgrimages of medieval times and the pilgrimages of today. The application of Christianity to daily life and pilgrimages is a concept that is very important to other Christians today, as they must make the decision on whether to go on a pilgrimage for themselves and for others. Pilgrimages in medieval times could be undertaken for a variety of reasons, many which do not appear today. This is because the pilgrimages back then were so different from those today. The roads were dangerous, just tracks, very few reliable maps and robbers were lurking along the way. Going on a pilgrimage was considered a very testing ordeal, and was much more of an undertaking for Christians to show their faith to God by going on one than to find their faith in God. In earlier times, certainly not all the time, the Crusades were being waged. Going on a pilgrimage was a way for people to escape the Crusades and not be called up to fight. The pilgrims were seen as devoting themselves to God in another way, and therefore would not have to fight in the Crusades, which understandably, many people did not want to. Having gone on a pilgrimage to escape the Crusades, a Christian may have developed a sense of pacifism, and, therefore, would not support any

What is Pilgrimage-AO1 Georgina Thomas

What is Pilgrimage- AO1 Georgina Thomas A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place. The holy places that Christians choose to visit on pilgrimage can include; where a saint lived, where a relic of a saint is kept, where a vision occurred or where Jesus lived. To travel to holy places (such as Rome or Lourdes) is in itself considered a part of the pilgrimage. Originally pilgrims would have walked and maybe met with other groups on the way. Some choose to make the journey alone or as a group, e.g. - the HCPT takes sick children to Lourdes as part of the charity. In fact many of the pilgrims who go to Lourdes are seriously ill or severely handicapped, has become a place where in numerous cases the sick have been restored to health. Between Easter and December each year two 'jumbulances' travel from Britain to Lourdes weekly. These are large ambulances, capable of carrying twenty-four passengers, including a doctor, three or four nurses, a chaplain, other helpers and about a dozen sick pilgrims. The ambulances pick up their sick passengers and then take them to Lourdes. The help given by the ambulance team is voluntary, and a trust also pays for the accommodation of the pilgrims at a chalet called 'Across' in Lourdes. Some Christians choose to make this journey uncomfortable as an act of penance and to reflect on the pain Jesus went through. In most

Throughout Christian history, pilgrimage has always featured highly. However, pilgrimages are a lot safer now. Pilgrims used to walk miles on their pilgrimage and risked many dangers. Nowadays, they are a lot safer and pilgrims can now go by car, bus or plane. Pilgrimage is a journey assigned by God, to a holy place or land. This place or and land is where an event has happened that is relevant to what the pilgrim believes. Pilgrimages are made for many different reasons including as a way to increase the pilgrim's faith, or to pray for something that is important to them or their loved ones or just simply to find or strengthen the pilgrim's relationship with God. Pilgrimage experience has four strands to it, which are Revelation, where truths are revealed to the pilgrim, Repentance, where the pilgrim shows real sorrow. Cleansing both physically and spiritually together healing physical, emotionally and the inner peace of spiritual healing. Pilgrims who travel to Medugorje on a pilgrimage go on the faith, that if the pilgrim is physically or mentally afflicted they may come back healed. They go to be spiritually strengthened and renewed. Many believers have also been reportedly, to leave Medugorje converted. Medugorje is a Christian place of worship or pilgrimage because of the many apparitions of the Virgin Mary that have occurred there. On June 24 1981, The Virgin Mary

Explain why going on a pilgrimage is important for many Roman catholic Christians.

Jodi Berkeley. Explain why going on a pilgrimage is important for many Roman catholic Christians. With reference to two places of pilgrimage explain the meaning and practices associated with them. A pilgrimage is a place a person goes to that has a special significance, it is a special place where something has happened, either where Jesus taught, where someone has appeared, a miracle has happened or where a martyr has died and later been named as a saint. The places have a special connection with great figures or events in the Roman Catholic religion. The places have a special holiness from being prayed in for many decades. People go on pilgrimages to feel closer to God as they feel more involved with him. The people make a special effort on their pilgrimage and this helps them to lead a disciplined spiritual life. The people feel closer to God as they are getting up and doing something. Going on a pilgrimage makes people aware of time on earth. It helps them to think and helps them to work out a sense of priorities. There are many different pilgrimage shrines people go to visit, in England there are two places you can visit, Walsingham ad Canterbury. There are also places abroad people can also visit, Rome and Taize. They also have Marion shrines, which are pilgrimage places associated with Our Lady. These are places where we believe she appeared like at Fatima where

Explain the part pilgrimage plays in the religious life of Christians. In your answer, include reference to the two places of pilgrimage you have mentioned.

Question 2 Explain the part pilgrimage plays in the religious life of Christians. In your answer, include reference to the two places of pilgrimage you have mentioned. Many Christians see pilgrimage as an important part in their spiritual growth and development. Some Christians also believe that pilgrimage may help them in their post-mortal journey to heaven. Christians go to church to praise the lord and give thanks to God. Serious Christians also pray at home, sometimes before and after meals, and sometimes at bedtime. The first place of pilgrimage that I have mentioned, Lourdes, attracts millions of pilgrims each year. This is because the spring that Bernadette dug in the presence of the Immaculate Conception is seen as a very important spiritual place in the world. Lourdes is also very important to Christians because Our Lady herself went there in the form of seventeen visions to Bernadette Soubirous. Some of the pilgrims that visit Lourdes are very ill people, some of whom are dying. These people may have asked able people to take them to Lourdes as a last wish. Many people believe that a dying person who visits Lourdes whilst they are ill will have a much quicker and safer journey to heaven. Others who are terminally ill might want to bathe in water that has been taken from the spring. At the baths, each person is stripped down to his or her under-garments. They

Describe a visit to a Christian place of pilgrimage

a) Describe a visit to a Christian place of pilgrimage One Christian place of pilgrimage is located in Lourdes in the south of France. This is thought to be the site of the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The history of Lourdes is as follows. In 1858 there was a girl called Bernadette Soubirous, 14, whose father was an ex-miller and whose family was poor. One day she was with her sister and her friend collecting firewood. When she was by the river bank at a place called Massabieille she heard a gust of wind and saw a lady standing in a niche above the cave entrance, dressed in white with a blue sash and a rosary around her arm. She knelt to the lady but when she told people of her visions they told her it was her imagination and that she should stay away from the cave. However, Bernadette continued to visit and the lady kept appearing. She told everyone in the village of her visions and some people followed her but did not share any of the visions. On the 25th February, a Thursday, she was told to drink and wash in the water from the cave. However there was only a tiny trickle of water in the cave and the tiny trickle became a stream pouring into the river. This stream now yields tens of thousands of gallons of water every day. On 2nd March she told Bernadette to build a chapel at the cave and to have processions there often. However, the priest did not
