“The Love of money is the root of all evil”
This famous saying refers to greed. People are never satisfied with what they have. Wanting more and better things in life, beating peers is an obsession with some.
In the story of scrooge, where money was his most treasured possession, the three ghosts past present and future were sent to him to help him realise the strength of goodness and giving to the poor. The right and only thing to do was to help the needy. When he helped the poor scrooge became a happier man. He had become spiritually rich rather than rich from his money.
World Development
In the past 150 years absolute poverty has grown around the world. Millions of people are without the essential things in life, e.g. food, clean water, clothes, adequate health care and a roof over their heads.
Most of these poor countries, otherwise known as developing countries are situated mostly in the southern hemisphere e.g. Sudan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Angolia and Chile are but a few. Many of the countries on the continents of Africa and central and South America and parts of Asia are subjected to various natural disasters, such as floods, droughts, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides.
The natural disasters also cause diseases to spread swiftly. People become to ill to work causing further strain to poor families. The rivers become polluted, sanitation is poor and the crops fail. Lack of nutritional food and clean water and inadequate sanitation can cause early deaths, especially in children. The life expectation of people in poor countries is approximately 50 years. Whereas in developed countries this is approximately 70 years. Limited or no health care means people are not getting the treatment they need to overcome the illness. People who are poor cannot afford the medication needed and or they cannot read the instructions on the labels because of lack of education.
Poor people have little or no access to education and training and therefore do not have the opportunities to develop skills in trade in order to get decent jobs to feed their families.
Most of the developing countries tend to have huge populations. Poor families have many children so they can help to work on the land as labour force because machinery is unavailable or too expensive. Lack of education means that the family planning programs are often failing and then the countries then struggle to provide enough food to feed the increasing population.
Christian Aid
After the Second World War in 1944 Christian aid was introduced. It was known as the British Churches Ecumenical Refugee Council. It was formed from Christian churches in Britain and an organisation formed in Ireland to help them. Its aim was to help the hundreds of thousands of people in Europe homeless after the world war. In September 1945 the organisation was renamed as Christian Aid. Today the Christian Aid spent £40 million helping people across 60 countries around the world. As it says in statement of aims published by Christian Aid news in October 1995.“Chiristians Aid works over sixty countries”.
Christian Aid help people in many ways through short term and long term aid. Christian Aid helps people through long term causes as they believe instead of sending money or food, helping the country in need to set up programmes to teach people how to grow food etc would last. They want to give the new generations in the developing countries more of a chance. They believe people will be able to survive better if they had the skill to do so such as farming etc. Programmes such as methods of training in farming are set up to teach people how to grow own food etc. Also Christian Aid helps people long term as they provide money for individuals or groups to start their own projects.
“There should be no rich people as long as there is poverty in the world”
With the statement “there should be no rich people as long as there is poverty in the world” in a way I agree and disagree with it. I agree with it because it is not fair that people should have to suffer without essentials were as others with large amounts of money and do not suffer and have many unnecessary material objects. I feel it is not fair because the money for them extras that the rich are getting could be used to help with the situation of poverty. Christians believe that the rich should give to the poor and that they should not let money come in the way from worshiping God.
In addition I feel that there should be rich people because if they’ve had the chances to become successful and they put effort into it then they should get their reward.
But I agree with the statement because people in poor countries don’t have the opportunities to become successful. Therefore if they don’t have the opportunities then there shouldn’t be others with opportunities as it is not equal.
