This is practiced today by the Roman Catholics and Orthodox when they obey the Gospel and goes the church every Sunday or Saturday so this shows how they obey the belief on the Sabbath. This is also put in to practice when the Catholics obey God by having the Eucharist on the Sabbath, they take one piece of bread and break it in to four, and this is then given out to the congregation and so id the rest of the bread and wine. The Methodist does this as well. They bless the bread and wine by saying “This is my body” and “This is my blood”. This is then given out on an open table, every one is then offered to eat and drink if they love the Lord Jesus.
Another belief is that you should rest on the Sabbath. This is also shown on Marks gospel on (Mk 16:1-2). “After the Sabbath was over, Mary of Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James, and Salome brought spices to go and anoint the body of Jesus.” This shows that Mary of Magdalene saw it necessary to rest on the Sabbath and then come and anoint Jesus’ body. This is put in to practice today by the Quakers when they come to meet and sit in silence, this could be looked upon as meditating and resting on the Sabbath.
A belief also practiced is that you should heal on the Sabbath. This is shown on Marks gospel in ((Mk1:21-27), (Mk1:29-31), (Mk3:1-6)). In (Mk 1:21-27) it describes when Jesus heals a man with an evil spirit, “the next Sabbath Jesus went to the synagogue and began to teach. The people who heard him were amazed at the way he taught, for he wasn’t like the teachers for the law; instead he taught with authority. Just then a man with an evil spirit in him came in to the synagogue and screamed, “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are-you are Gods Holy messenger.” Jesus ordered the spirit “Be quiet and come out of this man!” The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream and came out of him.” The belief of healing on the Sabbath is put into practice by Orthodox Christians and the Roman Catholics Christians at services when their priests lay their hands on someone head to in a way heal them.
Another belief used by denominations of Christianity is that you should socialise on the Sabbath. This is shown in ((Mk2:23-27), (Mk1:29-31)). I these stories they both describe being sociable on the Sabbath, in (Mk1:27-29) it is when Jesus goes around to Simons mother-in-law to have diner. This shows that Jesus was sociable on the Sabbath so some denominations think we should as well. The denominations which practice this are the Pentecostals, which believe we should all come together as one and celebrate mass. They celebrate by singing and dancing together. The Orthodox and Roman Catholics also come together on the Sabbath to celebrate mass but they don’t dance or sing hymns and have a sermon. The Quakers also socialise but don’t talk to each other, they socialise but by all coming to one meeting hall and sitting down together.
The final belief is that on the Sabbath we should worship God. This is spoken in ((Mk3:1-6), (Mk6:1-2)). In each of these stories worshiping to God on the Sabbath is mentioned. In (Mk6:1-2) it is said, “On the Sabbath he began to teach in the Synagogue.” This shows worship because Jesus was teaching in the synagogue about God so in turn he was worshiping God. In every christen denomination, worship happens on the Sabbath. The Roman Catholics and Orthodox worship God in church during a sermon. Baptist and Methodists worship God in church but don’t follow a set amount of rules for worshiping God. The Quakers worship God by sitting in a meeting hall with more than three people around them and meditate, only standing up and speaking when they want to say a pray or say what is worrying them. Pentecostals worship God by singing and dancing for him. The church Movement praise God by having a sermon but in their houses.
Marks Gospel tells us that we should obey, heal, rest, worship, socialise on the Sabbath. All of these are shown in Marks Gospel in many different ways. Many denominations of Christianity put all of these beliefs in to practice by in many different ways and every denomination thinks we should praise God in this manner and in no other way, but overall there is no wrong or right way to praise God. So in conclusion Marks Gospel tells us what to do on the Sabbath but different denominations interpret these in different ways.
