Introduction

My aim for this experiment is to find out which one of these factors may effect the reaction on Agar Gel to make it diffuse from purple to pink completely. The factors are:

  • Concentration of acid
  • Surface Area/Volume Ratio of Agar Gel
  • Amount of Acid

I chose to experiment of the Surface Area/Volume Ratio factor. To do this I needed 6 different sizes of cork borers and I will work out the areas of the Surface area and volume of the gels. I will work out the surface area of the cells by using the formula and finding the Radius and Height of the gels.

Prediction

I predict that the more surface area/volume that there is then the longer that the Agar Gel will take to diffuse from purple to pink completely. I think that the more the surface area/volume ratio there is then the more faster rate the gel will take to diffuse. I predict this because the acid diffuses at a faster rate when the ‘cell’ have a smaller surface area.

Fair Test

For my fair test I will make sure that for experiment one and two I will  make sure that both the Agar Gel sizes are the same. I will use the same size test tubes because if I don’t then the acid may not cover all the Gel in the test tube. This could make the time taken more similar if I take this into account. I will make sure that I time the experiment as soon as the Gel is dropped into the test tube, this could also effect the time taken.

I will use the same concentration of acid because this could make a big effect in the results.

Equipment

For my safety I will wear goggles and also I will be very careful with the acid because it is irritant. It is also very important to be careful in handling the agar gel because any acid on my skin will effect the experiment.

  • Six sizes of cork borers (to see if the surface area/volume effects the rate of diffusion)
  • Test tubes (to hold the experiment)
  • Test tube rack ...
