Should the Use of Cannabis Be Legalised

There are many people looking for a feeling of freedom. Some people may choose to go on a vacation and spend their money, but the most common gateway for people is drugs. One of the most common street and recreational drug is cannabis, which comes from the marijuana plant, according to Source 1. The plant that produces marijuana is the hemp plant cannabis sativa. It is used to heighten perception, affect mood and relax. Cannabis use is illegal in most parts of the world. In the UK, the most dangerous and addictive drugs are Class A, such as Heroin, Cocaine and Ecstasy, Class B drugs includes Amphetamines, and Cannabis belongs to Class C, according to Source 3. However, the plant appears to have some potential for medical use.

Medical cannabis is very effective and quick acting that the first effects are usually felt within seconds. It can bring relief to patients even with terminal diseases. According to Source 4, it can help Glaucoma, Multiple Sclerosis, AIDS, Cancer, Brain Tumours, Stroke, Nausea, Asthma, Epilepsy, Insomnia, Depression, Pain, and Migraine. The use of Cannabis as medical treatments proves dramatic improvement. It has also given many patients new hope, they simply call it ‘Wonder Drug’ and ‘Miracle’. The use of Cannabis changes many people’s lives, they no longer have to suffer from the pain, and can do things that they have been dreaming of doing, things that a normal person does, as suggested in Source 5. According to Source 6, the patients had been using the strongest painkillers available, risking overdose just trying to make the pain bearable. But the expensive, legal and even highly addictive drugs brought them no relief. They were skeptical towards the use of Cannabis, but it works after all the legal drugs had failed. The very first Cannabis cigarette reduced the pain by an average of 72%. The patients are getting almost total relief from their pain, with pain scores going down to zero. Scientists even predict that Cannabis will follow aspirin and penicillin and become a ‘Wonder Drug’ prescribed for a wide range of conditions. One of the Cannabis’ greatest advantages as a medicine is its remarkable safety, where nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal effects. But as Cannabis is a drug that is illegal for doctors to prescribe, patients with such medical treatments are treated differently. Especially for students, they cannot get their medication at school and think they are being targeted, as suggested in Source 7.

On the other hand, Cannabis creates a lot of problems. If Cannabis is not taken under a doctor’s advice, it can create a lot of health problems. As listed in Source 9 and 10, short-term effects of Cannabis include a general sense of well being, relaxation and euphoria. It will also create a sense of dreaminess, increased appreciation of music, sleepiness and time distortion. Physically, bloodshot eyes and a dry mouth are common symptoms, with a slight increase in heartbeat, decreases in blood pressure and impaired short term memory. There will also be balancing problems making the person find ...
