Health and Safety at ST Barts University

Health and Safety in St. Bart's and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry In this piece of coursework, I am evaluating the Health and Safety system at my work experience placement at St. Barts University Whitechapel. I am hoping to establish whether the health and safety work legislation is effective in the laboratory situations. In order to achieve my goal of assessing whether health and safety is effective at St. Barts University I shall: * Be working as an assistant lab-technician in the Neurology sector with hazardous chemicals and dangerous equipment; I will therefore need to be familiar with - and follow - health and safety procedures by wearing correct lab-gear, being aware of the fire and bomb-threat procedures etc. (see Appendix 'A', job description). * Investigate the effectiveness of the Health and Safety policy. * Interview my health and safety inspector. (Appendix 'D') * Distribute a questionnaire in the Neurology department to all fifty employees who work in the laboratories. (see Appendix 'E' and 'F') * Look at government Health and Safety policies and compare St. Bart's to verify if their employees meet the requirements. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/HealthAndSafetyAtWork/DG_4016686 (Appendix 'G') * I will evaluate how effective their health and safety policy is along with an evaluation of the efficiency of their fire and bomb-threat

My role in the community

My role in the community Preventing fight outbreaks, leading students into the dining area, making sure that student leave the premises safely and orderly, providing support for all teachers in and around school, these are just some of the responsibilities that prefects at Prestwich Arts College have to take on. And I am one of them. I was told that if I wanted to take on this role in the school; I should write a letter saying why I should be chosen over other students - so I did. I was told the following week at the morning registration; I was told that I was now required to wear a distinct tie and shirt so that others knew that I was a prefect. Also I was given a badge to wear with pride next to the school logo. You may ask why choose this occupation that will require added work and commitment to the day, when I have one of the most important years of my life a head of me, well its simple, helping others is what I am good at and enjoy - now I don't normally expect something in return but in this case I am rewarded with an head start to adult life and a better chance of receiving a place at the college I want. What more can I ask for. The best part of being a prefect is the upper crust. This is a nickname given to the prefect common room. The school provide a hot meal and cold meal service with added hot drinks and a fantastic socialising area where prefects can eat

GCSE English Coursework

GCSE English Coursework Work Experience I awoke on the first morning of my work experience tired as usual. I was looking forward to it but nervous at the same time. At least I could put casual clothes on instead of uniform seen as I would be working in the workshop for the first week and would be wearing a suit. As my dad owns the company I would be working at for the next two weeks, he was my transport. What the company does it to transport food from farms across the UK, and deliver using lorries to supermarkets. We left at roughly 7.30am, which was 15 minutes earlier than usual so I wasn't very happy with that. I was working in Royston at a place called Funstons, which my granddad had founded. As we pulled into the gates my dad took me straight up to the workshop to find the person I would be working with, his name was Dave Brown, we got introduced and then I was left with him for the next week. The first thing we did was jump into a truck and drive down to the test station to get the trailers MOT this was quite boring. When we got back the next thing I had to do was to put some sat nav into some of the trucks because they have been stolen before, so that was quite fun knowing where it goes and making sure that drivers cant get them out. That took about 3 hours because of all the wires and things like that. After that was completed there wasn't really

A day in the life of me!

A day in the life of me! BEEP! BEEP! CRASH! (The alarm clock hits the wall) it must be 6:30 am, (I think that 6:30 should not even have an AM!). Then I think to my self weekends shouldn't have alarm-clocks going off on them but of course it is not a weekend it's a Moany Monday Morning. On a Monday every one wants to know where the weekend has gone especially ME and all I can think about is Saturday night, when I was having a conversation with Sam. Lovely, lovely Sam. Then all I can hear is my mum shouting up the stairs "KIMBERLEY! KIMBERLEY!" As I have a glimpse of my clock I run out of my room and start to jump about on the bathroom floor mainly because its very cold. Then as I am doing this I jump into a lovely warm bath and before I can even think about it. Its seven o'clock and of this is the time I should be leaving. So as I am running out of the bathroom, I grab my dreary uniform, which I have worn for 4 years now (Unfortunately, Yes!) And hurry to put it on. I am throwing my bag on my shoulder and running out the door to see my bus go racing past me but I still make it the bus in time because some one has got off the only good thing about this day so far! I step on the same bus as always with the same people as always and the same people are half asleep as always and as I'm on the way to the garage I see Tasha and Henna they come running up to me. Henna

Lessons I Learned From My Work Experience.

From the date it was established there are huge changes that happened. From single proprietorship w/c started in 1996 w/ an auto supply business (Mich-cel auto supply) 3 branches in 2 yrs., now has became a corporation & venture in diff line of business such as gasoline sta. restaurant and distributor of surplus Japan & Brand new trucks from china. The key person who makes all things possible to happen was our boss. Thru his strategic & marketing plus good communication skill he was able to sell and market our products to our now loyal customers. Those traits and knowledge in marketing w/c he is continuously teaching us. And in the process pass on to us his employees. Changes are necessary. Sometimes the outcome can do good or bad to the company. But our boss was determined enough to take the huge step. And that single step he took take the company were it is right now. For teenagers, having a job is a way of making money, just a way of having extra cash for movies or clothes. It makes one feel independent. Personally, it made me feel sort of like an adult. It taught me how to be responsible and to handle my finances. I had to learn how to take public transportation, how to interact with my coworkers, work with different types of people, and also learn punctuality. In a way, it was almost like I had learned real life skills in under 3 months. I will never forget my first

My Work Experience.

My Work Experience Dear Dairy The first view I got of the playground I thought to myself "school", " can't escape it" and stopped there for a while, there I was, all alone in the playground looking around at the surroundings at the two sides of the school that were in view. Then I started to walk to the main reception, as I was walking I was thinking to my self what am I going to say. When I got to the reception doors and opened them. I had a quick look around, it was quite large wood on the sides with a nice blue coloured floor (I think or the other way round) it gave me a good impression of the school, which was Beck Foot School. As I was walking towards the main desk, I was looking at a sheet on the desk; it was a sign in sheet (which I filled in once). Well anyway there I was waiting for the reception lady to get off the phone. When I got there, I was not feeling nervous at all, I was quite relax, in fact chilled out. Then I turned around to have another view of the school, whoops there was a lady and a man sat, who where staring at me that broke my cool and I got a bit nervous. Then soon as I turned around facing back to the reception desk the lady ask me "can I help you young man". I just paused for a second or two quickly thinking what to say, then the words came out of my mouth and I said "I am here to see Cathy Rhodes" bravely. The reception lady was thinking

Work Experience

GCSE English Coursework- Work Experience For me, work experience did, as that great literary figure, the man from the "Ronsil Quick Drying Woodstain" adverts, is so fond of saying, exactly what it said on the tin. It was hard, tedious and, at times, strenuous work and was an experience I shall never forget. You would not have thought that working in a shop, however bizarre, could possibly have conjured such strong emotions of distaste and utter bewilderment, however working with an ageing Goth and an "emotionally scarred" hippy proved to be such an experience. The only people I can think of in the same league of weirdness and non-conformity as the shop's employees are its clientele. The weird, the wonderful and the even weirder paid regular visits to "Mainstation," a haven of all things retro and generally foul. Equally confusing as the customers' desire to buy the rubbish peddled by this eccentric pair, was my own dire performance in tasks I had thought to be menial and easy. The list of mishaps and mistakes of mine is infinitely long. I do not think that any one of them quite tops the one when, upon answering the telephone, a skill at which I had thought myself perfectly capable and quite adept, I managed to knock the till onto the floor, breaking it and spreading its contents across the room and then dropped the 'phone as well. Fortunately the 'phone proved to be more

Work experience.

Work experience Sarah Kinnear I was excited about work experience, after all it is a week off from school and I would also have the same placement as one of my close friends. I've never really considered being a hairdresser, but whenever you go to get your hair cut, the staff there are always bright, bubbly, chatty and most of all friendly. I arrived at Toni & Guy in Farnham 15 minutes early on Monday morning, I was excited and nervous, but I thought if it was anything like my part-time job it would be a bit mundane but quite a laugh. First of all, I met two other girls who had work experience there, one of whom had already done a week there. When Portia arrived, we were given a tour by one of the juniors and shown what jobs to do, and how to do them. During this tour, I found out that the other two girls were from Amery Hill School, which is quite lucky because I have a few friends from that school, and so starting a conversation was easy. The morning went really slowly, as it was hard to spot the things that needed doing, and the stylists don't really treat you with much respect. When it was time for my break, I went to sit outside in the courtyard with some of the staff. I sat there for 15 minutes, nobody looked at me, or made any acknowledgement that I was even there. The last few hours of the day really seemed to drag on and I couldn't wait to leave. I was out that

Work experience

Work Experience (Daisya Nugent) I am going to write an essay about my work experience which I did for two weeks to gain more knowledge, understanding, and to develop my social and key skills, also I did this work experience to get a preview on how the real work life is, so that in the future I can have a clear understanding on what I will experience when I get an occupation. However my placement was at a place called connextions where young people (teenagers) go to get jobs and also learn how to make a suitable C.V to get a job interview. In January 2007 I was told by my form tutor and head of year that it was important for year 10 students to do work experience, however I came from a different country which didn't do work experience in school, so I didn't understand why we had to do it this early. Thus my head of year gave me a clear understanding on why I had to do work experience and why it was important. I was very nervous because of the thought that I was going to be in a different environment from school and also I had to socialize and interact with new people. However as the days went by my fears were alleviated due to the children in my school talking about what they wanted to do for work experience and how much fun it was going to be. After hearing my friends' comments about work experience and understanding how many skills I would gain, I became

Work Experience.

Work Experience The day had finally arrived. The teachers have been telling us to get ready and start worrying about the whole thing but to tell you the truth, I didn't think the day would ever arrive. Kind of like exams. You know that you're going to have to take them eventually but they're just so far away, it feels like you're going to die before they ever arrive. Now, to the topic at hand... It was the beginning of a whole new experience. Work Experience. Sounds dreadful, doesn't it? That's because it was dreadful...in my experience. I had two whole weeks to gain some skill. Think that's easy? Think again. It was as interesting as watching faeces dry out and turn white. Not as smelly though...but just as messy. The dreaded workplace was located in Angel, Islington so it took some time to get there. Travelled by train. Two trains, to be exact. I got up at around six in the morning, which was a whole new thing. Morning smells different. It smells fresh...almost soothing...but at the time I could not give a monkey about it all. I was too busy slapping my face to keep me awake. If this is what I have to look forward to in the future, you can forget it. Me? Getting out of bed earlier than God himself? Please. There would have to be a snowstorm in Hell for that. Alas, I had to do that for two weeks. The pain, the pain! I travelled with my brother Stef. We took the car to
