pride and prejudice /womens role in 19th century

Pride and Prejudice In the 19th century women were vulnerable with many problems because of their sex. In Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" it shows what life was like for men and women. It also portrays love and marriage from social attitudes for marriage and money. It also shows distinct attitudes and expectations with regard to marriage which affects women in many diverse ways. In the typical family women would rely on their husband's income as they were not allowed to work. However if you weren't married you depend on your father or brother all your life and mostly end up as an old spinster , who would be very poor as she would have no right on anything in the family . She would be a burden for them. Women would often marry for money rather than true love. In their society it was crucial to get their daughters married off as soon as possible to "rich" and "handsome" men. Women didn't have the right to choose because they were expected to say yes to anyone who proposed to them. However the lead heroine Elizabeth Bennet is an independent, humorous and outrageous, she is totally different from normal girls her age. Austen uses the proposals of Mr Collins and Mr Darcy to show her perspective to marriage. This essay will compare and contrast the two men, their proposal and Elizabeth's response. Mr Collins is a far distant relative of the Bennet family. He is a

Comparing The Superstitious Man's Story And The Call.

Coursework Essay Comparing The Superstitious Man's Story And The Call I am comparing the two stories, The Superstitious Man written by Thomas Hardy and The Call written by Robert Westall. The Superstitious Man's story is narrated by a third person. We don't actually find out much about the narrator because not much is mentioned. However in The Call the story is narrated by the rota-secretary of the local Samaritans. Tension in The Superstitious Man is built up in many ways in the story, when Betty finishes her ironing she decides to go up to their chamber but to her great surprise, on reaching the foot the staircase she sees Williams boots, standing in the same place as they always stood, when he had gone to bed. Then going up the staircase and entering the chamber, she found William in bed sleeping as sound as a rock. By now Betty was confused and couldn't quite work out what had gone off. She wonders now how William could have got back again with out her seeing or hearing him, this was beyond her comprehension. Further on in the story Betty, walking down Longpuddle Street met Jim Wardle's daughter Nancy. As they were both talking Nancy started telling Betty about what she saw on midsummer's Eve, when she went to church porch she told Betty that it is believed that the ghosts of the people entering the church and not returning are those who are going to die within the

ROMEO ANS JULIET HOW IS ACT 3 SCENE 1 THE PIVOTAL POINT OF THE PLAY

How is Act 3 Scene 1 the Pivotal Point of the Play? Right from the beginning of the play the audience knows that Romeo and Juliet are going to die tragically. This makes the audience aware that the play will take a turn for the worst. Throughout the play up to Act 3 Scene 1 there is a tone of optimism between the two families, although there are differences between the two houses, it does not appear to be particularly serious until this scene and the play is all all about love rather than the feud between the two families. In this scene there are absolutely no stage directions, therefore it is completely up to the director to decide how to portray this scene. In the beginning of the scene, Benvolio suggests to Mercutio that they should go indoors because if they encounter any men from the house of Capulet a fight would be unavoidable. Mercutio ignores this suggestion and carries on. This shows how Benvolio is a peace maker and tries to make Mercutio avoid any fights. However Mercutio enjoys fighting and so fighting Tybalt, known as the best fencer in town, makes him excited and is quick to throw himself into a fight. Tybalt then enters with a group of men and asks to speak with one of them, angered by this Mercutio begins to try and provoke Tybalt. The scene before Act 3 Scene 1 is the scene in which Romeo and Juliet are married and so Romeo is overjoyed, this explains

Analyse the character of Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. How is he portrayed as an anti-hero and how does this relate to his rebellion in the novel as a whole?

Analyse the character of Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four. How is he portrayed as an anti-hero and how does this relate to his rebellion in the novel as a whole? In the opening chapter of Nineteen Eighty-Four, the reader is given a description of Winston Smith; our "hero" is described as vulnerable, frail, weak and fearful. However, Winston's function is crucial. As a trickle of his individuality seeps through, there is promise of only failure if he should take any measures to counteract conformity. Winston's defeat may be implicit in the opening of the book, but he is not yet defeated. The reader feels sympathy for Winston. Without Winston as a focus, the novel would lose most of its power. Nineteen Eighty-Four is the story of Winston's revolt against 'The Party'. The story begins with a description of the slavish life of Oceania's citizens. The surprise is that Winston lives a very similar life to ours, as today we are fighting a dictatorship regime, with a war, in Iraq. These oppressed people are brainwashed to not even question 'The Party' but Winston slowly regains his memory, and he remembers how the capitalist world slowly changed into this robotic society. Even the language spoken in Oceania prevented people from speaking their minds and almost succeeded in taking away their individuality completely, as Newspeak would turn the people into clones.

Swing Rioters and the Luddites )The Swing rioters were a bunch of farmers in 1830 that were scared of losing their jobs by the new machines. The new machines took up several of the mens job which lead to unemployment in Winter for the men. To help the laboures get by allowenceswere made but in the 1820's they were cut this caused the laboures and their families even more greif and misery. To show the masters of the farms how annoyed they were and to show them that they needed them back. The unemployed laboures went around burning hayricks and smashing up threshing machines. This happened throughout the south of England, the riots spread to countries as far as Norfolk, Devon, Hereford and Sussex. The reason of why they are called the Swing rioters is because they followed a man called Sir Captain Swing. No one really knows whether Sir Captain Swing is actually real or not. The laboures only really used him in their threat letters to get the farmers scared. All the farmers hated Captain Swing as they had no one else to blame that was the only name that was signed at the bottom of the lrtters to keep them anonymous. Th goverment acted very strongly against the rioters and took a firm stand 19 laboures were executed, 481 were transported to Austrailier band 644 were sent to prison. Out of all those punishments the transportation was known as the worst as the boat trip was awful.

Moi...Yeah What About It?

" Little Bitch... don't you fuckin' walk away from me, I'll make you pay, I'll kill you, then everyone's happy!!" At this darkness blocked my blurry vision, and a warm coppery taste was my only comfort, it had been my comfort for so long now. It was only a friend and I'm nearly dead. But when you get accused of going with your cousin you'd expect it of a friend. I was fourteen when it started, just over a year, you'd think I'd be all cried out, but I've learnt, gradually, save them, save them for the nights when you close your eyes and he's giving you what you want, and what you need... love. Corny you might think, but the good things make you cry more than the bad. Every time he's not smoked bit too much skunk, sput, or what ever else he does, we'll cuddle and he whispers those three little words every girl longs to hear from a tall dark and handsome older guy. 'I love you' But where's the truth in it. Most guys of sixteen think those three word can bed a girl. Well if they're vulnerable enough it's a definite thing. That's where trouble starts. Sex its just another word for hurt, blood, committing yourself and signing freedom and friends away. And all to some guy that thinks you want to spend the rest of your life with cos they popped your cherry. Its not reality, not to me and it shouldn't be to you. Loves a trap, an evil thing. It makes me feel sick, even just thinking

The computer he will be using is the Dell Twilight 1620 which will be able to cope with Mr. Bob requirements, so the computer is unlikely to crash while Mr. Bob or his staffs are using it. The computer will run Linux Red Hat, which is a free operating system, and Microsoft Excel comes already installed with the latest version. This seems to be a very good idea, as this will save Mr. Bob an estimated £340. Mr. Bob will also be using a keyboard because this hardware will allow him to key in relevant information concerning the member's details, method of payment and booking details. This is a better option compared to touch screens as sometimes when you want to key in a certain letter it displays the wrong one, whereas with a keyboard there will be less mistakes and the customer will be happier as it is less time consuming. A mouse will also be
