Comparison of two pieces based on Daffodils

Name: Sarah Barendswaard Abubakr Date: 2/01/09 Teacher: Mrs. Caringcross Subject: English Year: Y12 Task: essay Comparison of two pieces based on Daffodils The two pieces; a diary entry and a poem, are based on the same main theme; Daffodils. Text 1A is the diary entry written by Dorothy Wordsworth in 1802 describing a scene that she has experienced, whereas text 1B is a poem which is based on the entry written by her brother William Wordsworth two years later. The two pieces have a similar theme which is the appreciation of Daffodils. However Text 1A is very descriptive and concentrates in how the daffodils are 'so beautiful' whereas text 1B concentrates at how the sight and memory of daffodils would please you. 'my heart with pleasure fills' Dorothy describes the daffodils as being a 'little colony' shaped as a 'long belt' that is 'one busy highway' that has 'the breadth of a country turnpike.' We can clearly see that she is using simple diction as this is her private diary. The use of the words 'highway' and 'turnpike' and the description of the daffodils as they 'sprung up' emphasis that the daffodils are active, that they are moving, that they are blooming, growing and reproducing, This indicates that it is around spring time. Dorothy's entry mainly celebrates the existence of daffodils whereas Williams poem is personal and

AT HOME AND ABROAD . ¿Qué tipo de vacaciones prefieres? En mi opinión, la Australia es el país más interesante porque la cultura es muy diferente a otros países. Comparison of Wilfred Owen and Sigfried Sasson

Shiva Baweja The nineteenth century was impossible to revoke because it was swept away in a tide of mud and blood with the coming of World War I. "The Great War" lasted from 1914 through 1918. More than eight million soldiers lost their lives in the struggle between the Central Powers and the Allies. The old ideals of warfare fought by aristocrats and gentlemen vanished beneath gas attacks, trench warfare, and heavy artillery bombardments. Enlisted men would spend weeks in the most unbearable trenches of the front line. These trenches were the most treacherous place to be in the war. Many of the soldiers suffered from trench foot, starvation, dysentery, shell shock, and body lice and if these didn't get to them the mortar and gas attacks were sure to. World War I posters attracted men to enlist pledging honor, duty, and camaraderie, going back to the Latin saying that it is sweet and honorable to die for one's country. This encouraged many soldiers to put their emotions and 'the real truth' onto paper. Writing has always been a tool for reflecting and commenting on society. During the 20th century many poets reacted to problems in the world with highly emotionally charged poems. The horror of war and the spiritual degradation it inflicts is evident in the work of the World War I poets. Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon were both soldiers and poets. Their poems reflect the

IOP - Pride & Prejudice

IOP Good afternoon. My individual oral presentation is based on the book Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen in the year of 1813. Today, I will examine the character of William Collins, by analyzing his marriage proposal to Elizabeth Bennet in Chapter 19. I believe that this passage contains great importance in the understanding of Jane Austen's character, Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins is a clergyman and an extremely comical character because of his mix of adulation and pride. He is fond of making long and silly speeches and stating formalities which have absolutely no meaning in themselves. For Mr. Collins, speech is not a means to communicate truth but a means to say what he thinks the people around him want to hear or what will make the people around him think well of him. He is first in line to inherit Mr. Bennet's estate, and wishes to marry one of the Bennet sisters to lessen the burden of entailment. I have begun my key-passage analysis from the line "The idea of Mr. Collins, with all his solemn composure, being run away with by his feelings, made Elizabeth so near laughing that she could not use the short pause he allowed in any attempt to stop him further, and he continued:"... From this excerpt, we can see that Jane Austen has used the term 'solemn composure' to exhibit Mr. Collins' seriousness and sincere poise. We may also observe the attention that Mr.

Enter without So Much as Knocking Commentary

Bruce Dawe is a contemporary Australian poet who in interviews has stated that he is very interested in placing ordinary things alongside extraordinary things. As an example, in one of his poems he places the word, cornflakes, alongside a serious matter of death. Strategically, Dawe chose the medium of poetry within which to write as it is the best medium through which to convey emotions, feelings, and thoughts. Bruce Dawe structured out this poem with each stanza representing each stages of human life; starting with birth, toddler, young boy, teenager, adult, car accident and death. However, his theme is different to the subject. Throughout this poem, Dawe brings up themes such as; the human condition, no significances of life and death and adult's ignorance and their selfishness. Dawe criticises the

WORLD ASSIGNMENT 2 English A1 / Higher Level FATHERS AND SONS By: Ivan Turgenev 0 years have passed... By: Mohammad Asad Date: 01/30/2008 Word Count: 1,537 Candidate Number: 001109-018 Statement of Intent Ten years have passed since the brothers last met. It was then when in the small parish church, two weddings had taken place quietly and almost without witnesses: Arkady's wedding to Katya and that of Nikolai Petrovich to Fenichka; and on that same day, Nikolai Petrovich was giving a farewell dinner for his brother, who was going away to Moscow on some business. I have decided to continue and add to the novel Fathers and Sons ever since I finished reading it. I always wondered where each character would be after a certain period of time. And now I will remind you of the characters, and where we last left them with Turgenev, so we can carry on from there: The Kirsanovs, father and son, had settled at Maryino. Arkady was passionately engrossed in the management of the estate and the farm was yielding a fairly substantial income. Nikolai Petrovich became an arbitrator in the land reforms and was putting all of his energy into the work. Katya had given birth to a son, little Nikolai, while Mitya (Fenichka's son) scampered all over the place. Pavel Petrovich had gone from Moscow abroad for the sake of his health and then stayed in Dresden, where he associated chiefly

As he sparks this idea in the beginning, he puts the pigs into the leading position of the revolution, which allows the chance for the pigs to gain the position of power which has been held by human if revolution does succeed. Snowball leads the animals into the early stages of revolution. During the first doubt about the new "farm", fundamental question about how the system is going to work, Snowball started the tradition of pigs making the decision to questions like problems with "sugar" and "ribbon". He abused language to encourage animals' enthusiasm towards animalism under the pigs. Napoleon with the help of Squealer also abuse language a lot to maintain pigs' rule. While Napoleon is the one who is making decisions, Squealer is the one who tries to "justify" and "promote" Napoleon's decisions through abuse of language, and to make sure the animals at

Loss of Hope

Loss of Hope By Rushad Heerjee How does it feel to be oppressed and lose all hope? The House of Bernarda Alba written by Federico Lorca is a theatrical tragedy which portrays Bernarda as a harsh and cruel woman who believe in oppressing others as well as upholding ancient family traditions. Her domineering nature keeps her five daughters and three servants in check as she rules the household with an iron fist. Bernarda is an eccentric character as she not only acts rashly but also uses physical and verbal abuse to make herself look better than others. In the play The House of Bernarda Alba, Lorca, using Bernarda's relationship with other characters highlights the central theme of oppression of women in Spanish society during the 1900's. Bernarda has repressed everyone in the household to the point that they are all afraid of her. From the start of the play the audience's image of Bernarda is somewhat similar to that of a totalitarian dictator. Poncia and the maid are discussing her character and Poncia says "She could sit on your heart and watch you die for a whole year without talking that cold smile of her damn face" (1, 194). This line projects an image of relentless cruelty and shows Bernarda's true character. Furthermore when we first see Bernarda, her first words are "Silence" (1, 199). This word shows Bernarda as an authoritarian who has total control of everything
