Bushranging - living off the land and being supported by or stealing from free settlers - was either chosen as a preferred way of life by escaped convicts or was a result of the lack of supplies in the early settlements. Australia's bushranging period spanned nearly 100 years, from the first convict bushrangers active from 1790 to the 1860s, through the outlawed bushrangers of the 1860s and 1870s who were able to be shot on sight, to the shooting of the Kelly Gang in 1880. While many bushrangers had populist reputations for being 'Robin Hood' figures; some bushrangers were brutal and others harassed the gold escorts and diggers returning from the goldfields. The popularity of bushrangers and their ethos of 'fight before surrender' was commemorated in bush songs and folklore. Escaped convicts Bushranging began soon after the British colonisation of Australia. The bush surrounding the settlement was unexplored, but this did not deter the desperate convicts from escaping - happy in their aim to make their way to Batavia (now the city of Jakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia ) or China. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel Chapter Analysis

February Settings The chapter opens with the kitchen ("Tita's Realm") as the main setting, but it has a different significance now because there is a direct relationship with the wider society due to "the wedding". The entire novel is set in a time of political instability- The Mexican Revolution. At this time, women began to gain freedom, appreciation and respect from men, allowing them to find a place for themselves. In this chapter, Tita shows initial signs of bringing across immense emotion through her cooking and its products. This is an act of liberation that Mama Elena would not approve of if she knew of the consequences. "White" is constantly repeated throughout this chapter, it shows how the writer makes Tita seem mentally unstable because all she can think about is the wedding, and weddings are mostly all white. She seems mentally unstable because the whiteness of the wedding seems to have blinded Tita because "[Tita] asked if Nacha was going to add the red food color to the icing" when Nacha already did. Character During this overwhelming year of the month, Tita continually thinks of the colour "White" because all she can think about is the marriage between her sister and Pedro (the love of her life) which leads her to become mentally unstable. Fasting Feasting by Anita Desai Detailed Study Notes

An Inner World pp38-43 and pp137-140 Anita Desai's Fasting, Feasting explores the different aspects of Indian, and American culture. The title explains the two parts of the book, Fasting in India and Feasting in America. However this is not necessarily the case, as in both of the two countries, elements of fasting and feasting can be seen. For example, Mira-masi who is physically fasting yet feasts obsessively on religion. In America, it is the opposite, where there is in fact plenty of food, but the family Arun stays with is fasting spiritually. Mira-masi's entrance in the novel begins with a description of a sweets, Uma exclaiming how she 'makes the very best ladoos'. And if we follow Mira-masi, her last appearance describes her as being 'gaunt, ill.' Although Mira-masi has been feasting on her religious beliefs, this has not led her to being fulfilled. Much rather, it has left her hollow. Like all the characters in the book, their quest for whatever it may be: intelligence, a lost Lord, freedom, all ends in a sham. Their journey only ends with the realisation of complete limitation in everything. Mira-masi's religious devotion is echoed in her first appearance, where she is accompanied by Uma to the temple for daily puja.
