Hamlet ACT I Scene I:1

ACT I Scene I:1 After encountering the ghost of his deceased father Hamlet gains a new view of Claudius. He finds that the new king, his uncle, murdered his father, King Hamlet. Claudius is more than just a committee of incest. The ghost reveals this information to Hamlet first in lines 38 and 39 of the scene, "The serpent that did sting thy father's life Now wears his crown," (Shakespeare, 34). After examining the ghost's description of the murder the following images and themes can be found to represent key events and symbols in Hamlet: Angelic (pg. 35, line 55): Gertrude is described by King Hamlet's ghost to be a radiant angel, thus forbidding Hamlet to ever hurt her in his plot of revenge. Demonic (pg. 35, lines 10-13): King Hamlet is a ghost, sentenced to walk the earth and in hell for a "certain term". This is central to the novel as Hamlet ultimately commits certain crimes in order to set his father's spirit free. Sleep (pg. 36, line74-75): sleep symbolizes death, "Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand of life, crown, of queen, at once dispatched." Garden (pg. 34, line 36): the garden is a leitmotif which is representative of Denmark. "Tis give out that, sleeping in my orchard..." Poison (pg. 35, line 62): "With juice of cursed hebenon..." King Hamlet was poisoned by his brother, Claudius. Milk (pg. 35, line 69): "And curd, like eager droppings into

Nigeria - Ett utvecklingsland i tiden.

The Buddha of Suburbia-Identity

How does the multicultural British society influence the identity of Karim in The Buddha of Suburbia? Introduction Identity is often characterized as an individual's comprehension of him or herself as a discrete, separate entity. The word comes from the Latin word "idem", which means "the same". Our identity is formed by our circle of acquaintances throughout our entire life; it's a lifelong process which consists of the development of the distinct personality of an individual under particular circumstances caused by our formation of opinion and as mentioned before, our circle of acquaintances but another influential fact is the society. It's a particular stage in the life of an individual, in where the individual posses his or her characteristics. This stage in life defines the individual to others as well as themselves. Some identities are acquired with birth whereas others are obtained throughout life. A considerable factor with reference to this identity formation is the fact, that the identity is affected by the encounters that are made throughout life. Therefore identity is not a stationary notion; it's a notion that undergoes a progressive change throughout life. The difficulty of understanding the meaning of this term, vary from individual to individual. The complexity of this term is even more difficult to deal with if the individual is from another cultural

Engligh Extended Essay on Egdgar Allen Poe

Dreams: How Are They Used By Edgar Allen Poe in His Short Stories and Poetry To Create Terror and Mirror The Narrator's Sense of Reality? Nandini Chandra Extended Essay 9th November 2009 Word count: 3984 Student number: 1267005 Abstract This essay discusses the uses of the concept of dreams by Edgar Allen Poe in his short stories and poems and how they are used to mirror the narrator's or a character's perception of reality and create terror. The poems used were Dreams, A Dream, and A Dream Within A Dream. The short stories referred to are both from his famous horror collection and are called The Pit and the Pendulum and The Fall of the House of Usher. Poe uses a 1st person narration in both his short stories and his poetry, generally without giving an idea who the person is, nor is the narrator omniscient. This creates a blurry, dreamy effect which, in turn, creates the effect of fear. An example of this is the confused narration through The Pit and the Pendulum ends up emphasizing the torture that the prisoners of the Spanish inquisition were put through. His use of diction in poetry is heavily relied on to extend the narrator's views on dreams themselves. Poe uses imagery, such as portraying the evanescence of dreams through the image of trying to clutch sand. It is shown that Poe uses dreams heavily as a contrast or as a comparison to reality to underline his

A Mother's Legacy In Mary Shelley's "Mathilda"

Katedralskolan Uppsala Katedralskolan, Uppsala IB School Code: 1291 Session: May 2008 The Extended Essay: English Supervisor: Christina Cullhed A Mother's Legacy in Mary Shelley's Mathilda Author's name: Zack Lindahl Session number: 1291-037 Word count: 3868 Date: 2007-11-16 Abstract Mary Wollstonecraft and her daughter Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley are two writers whose ideas are likely to be similar. Shelley admits that she is influenced by her mother. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to find out and to identify the ideas presented in Wollstonecraft's essay on women's rights A Vindication for the Rights of Woman (1792) and see if they are incorporated into Shelley's novella Mathilda (1819). My analysis of A Vindication for the Rights of Woman shows that Wollstonecraft's main ideas are that limited education, the subjugation of women by the family, female dependency on men and romantic thinking are the source for women's inferiority. This essay identifies and examines these ideas in the light of some secondary material and tries to suggest that they are visible as themes in Shelley's Mathilda. In Mathilda, these ideas are visible as themes throughout the novel. The tragedy that befalls the characters illustrates the immoral and self-destructive tendencies which women obtain when being subject to these conditions. On the other hand, Shelley does not
